Thanks! So in extension people can share accounts with each other, given them both have the gamefiles?
FYI- There is only one save so, if you were gonna share an account, you would both have to play the same pilot. Also, my account has two logout buttons. One for log out and another called "log out of machine." Not sure if that would cause an issue or not.

Elite Dangerous uses a system similar to Steam Guard - every time you attempt to log in from a new (by extension unauthorized system/ IP ) it sends you a verification code to the email bound to the account that you have to enter alongside your password. I'm pretty sure that's what that "log out of machine" button is for - to revoke the system.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

The single save file I assumed to be the case yea, not an issue. If the system is similar I assume you can just have 2 pcs be 'known' to it without issue? Had not been able to find any mention of account sharing anywhere and dont wanna get it unless im sure I can share it with a friend.
Can you download the client logging in with your account on the elite site if you buy it on steam? Would prefer to get the game on steam but if you cant download the non steam client from the elite site that would not be the best way to go about it.
Can you download the client logging in with your account on the elite site if you buy it on steam?
That's a good question. Unfortunately, I don't know, as I bought the game back in August off of their site.

I saw that they are giving out steam keys for people that purchased on their site, reckon this is only for people who purchased it before it was on steam? or do you get a steam code along with the purchase on their site if you buy it there?

"We’ll soon be offering Steam keys to anyone who bought Elite: Dangerous from the EliteDangerous.com store who would like a key, and to anyone who buys the game from our store in the future."
You login to your ED account, link your Steam account via the "Partner Keys" section. Then you click the button and it gives you a Steam key to redeem for the Steam account you linked.

Aye just found this as well, but this is what is confusing me :
Note: the key you generate will add Elite: Dangerous to any Steam library but WILL NOT grant access to the game without an existing registered Frontier account and copy of the game. For this reason, please don’t give your keys away to friends! They won’t be able to play without having already bought the game from Steam or the EliteDangerous.com store!
What I'd want to do is redeem the steam key for myself, and share the account using the site's client with a friend.

That should work. Buy the game through their store and then send your friend the launcher executable. He'll be able to download through the launcher, while you'll be able to download through either the same launcher or Steam. It basically works just like an MMO login - so long as you have a game account and get the launcher from somewhere you can download it.
Obviously you won't be able to be downloading or playing at the same time however as you're sharing the same account.
I hope he's a REALLY good friend. I'd hate to come back to my ship being blown to smithereens and a huge chunk of credits missing!

Thats what I needed to know, excellent! many thanks!
haha yeah he is, we been best friends since diapers pretty much. we both been eager to try the game but both cant really justify a 50$ game purchase for something we might not end up playing all that much. going 50/50 on it means we get alot more out of the purchase price and makes it easier on the progression =)
there's a danger in this game that you can buy a ship with insurance cost higher than your credits and loan ability
if you lose that ship, you cannot buy it back - you are reset to your starting ship with only the pennies you had in your pocket
this essentially means you are back to square one in the entire game
make sure your friend knows this and won't gamble

We've both play(ed) eve for years so the dont fly what you cant afford is pretty ingrained on us =)

Well, even though you only have one save, you can own multiple ships. As long as you stay within range of the same station (where you store the ships) you should be able to have your own ship.
Come to think of it, sharing over different machines should be no problem. When they released the Mac client, they advertised that you could play across both clients using the same account (assuming you have to register each machine when you play.)
This is a good time to get in. The new Powerplay beta should go live in a week or so. It will give the game some much needed depth.
Have fun!

I hate to be the one to crap on the parade, but this remains to be seen. I put some quality hours into the beta today, and thus far it seemed to go like this-
Each system has a state of either "prime" (get ready to invade) "contest" (actively invading) or "fortify" (you've won it, now you've gotta keep it.)
Each faction goes about advancing each of those states in a different way, but basically it boils down to grinding courier, transport, or war-zone bounty missions.
Grinding those objectives gives you vouchers which you can turn in which determines your rank for that week (or is it month)? Each rank gives different passive bonuses or access to special equipment based on the faction you're grinding for.
Sure, there's a lot more transparency now as to what's happening and why in terms of who owns a system, but it's the same mindless grind as twas before, in the same seemingly lifeless universe, at least when it comes to the combat.
To be fair though I have yet to test out the new mining and drone stuff, maybe that'll provide a much needed diversion! Apparently they've made smuggling more profitable, but as long as they still use the same crappy "detection" system I still can't see it being worth the faction hit if caught.

Yeah. Powerplay is pretty meh, and now they are making timed exclusive updates for consoles. Fuck that. I still enjoy the game from time to time, but it starts to leave a bad taste in my mouth.
You all got scammed Gents. Time for fucking console money, booyah!
actually doing quite well powerplay needing some adjusting or not the 20% on bounty claims in controlled systems is suiting me just fine
I don't know about "doing quite well". I'm allied with Empire, hold the highest rank of King (because that makes sense!), and am max allied with the minor empire faction in control of the station I'm in. And yet, 95% of the missions on my Bulletin Board in the station are still filled with 20-50k pay outs for some crap haulage, with one every few hours or so popping up for a measly 200k or some such. That's not even a drop in the fucking bucket.
They REALLY need to work on adding actual fucking content. I've been grinding combat zones/haulage/bounties for the past 6 months. I'm at the point now where I have a fully kitted Python AND Type 9 - and there's STILL fuck all to do in this game.
1. Haul Cargo A to B
2. Kill X million NPCs over and over till have you have to go reload.
3. Take a mission on the bulletin board to do either #1 or #2.
Mining, exploration, piracy, and smuggling are so downright fucking worthless in terms of payout and actual depth that it's not even funny anymore.
When are they going to get off their ass and do some fucking work to add REAL content, not some bullshit grind haulage or grind kills meta-game that is "Power Play"?

Is this still a thing? I thought people would be bored of seeing the same procedually based nothingness over and over again with fake procedually made stations and economies that mean fuck all, all while trying to avoid griefers and utter boredom.
Oh, I don't like this game, and yes I'm bitter that the greatness of Elite has been reduced to a pretty but empty game about floating in space.
