How does that even begin to make sense?! Over the weekend I could end up finishing every single MQ without getting any XP .. but no.. apparently that's "not much loss"? Neutral

Things don't have to make sense when you're in "vague damage control bullshit" mode.

The impressive thing about Novigrad is not how many quests there are, it's the design of the city itself. It feels like a real city, as much as that's possible in a game. I can't think of any other game coming close.

+1 The city oozes atmopshere. That's what makes Novigraad an epic place. And sure, secondary activities aren't as good as those in the wilderness (to be expected for a witcher) but some of the main quests (like the search for Dandelion one) are simply brilliant Smile

Thw riting is good, there's some genuinely funny dialogue, but I don't consider running from NPC to NPC and clicking through cutscenes brilliant quest design by any stretch of the imagination.

Brilliance doesn't need to be solely gameplay based, or solely story based, or both at the same time Smile

Good writing coupled with tedious legwork makes for a mediocre experience overall. At least if you disable quest helpers (after every step of the quest because they keep turning themselves back on) you need to engage your brain to find the dziwkas, I'll give them that at least.

Nearly allll the quests in the game have tedious legwork (or tedious horse riding), so no, that element doesn't automatically make a quest bad (they're just game mechanics), especially when the other important elements are there and more than make up for it.

Think I'll just add some levels with cheat engine and get the game finished.

I was gonna wait on a 2nd playthrough anyway as I wanted to get the game out my system a bit before playing again.

Well, the obvious one we have kept mentioning? Story telling. Add to that great or at least interesting characters, intertwine with other quests/characters, which this game does really good as well.

Isn't "running around searching for things" the sole definition of a "quest"?

No, running from NPC A to NPC B to NPC C is not a "quest", at least not a well-designed one in the context of an RPG. If telling a good story is all that mattered this might as well be a CYOA game where you click through story slides from start to finish.

Not every quest needs to have 3 dragons and brimstone fire from the sky to be enjoyable, y'know. Dandelion quest is a nice (and welcome) change of pace.

Exactly my point Smile There's no need for every single quest to be "complete" in the sense of having all elements present. That would become repetitive itself.

And "change of pace" that's a very underrated resource that's really important in many disciplines, and works particularly well in a video game.

I don't know, maybe it's because I'm not doing all of Novigrad at once, but I'm really not feeling any tediousness. I'm doing some monster hunting, some detective work, a dungeon and sure, some talking here and there, while I'm searching for clues about Dandelion. It's really not much different than in any other part of the game - except it's in a city setting, instead of small villages and/or the wilderness. It's kinda what I expected before I went into the city.

Oxenfurt, on the other hand, did indeed feel somewhat dissapointing.

Yep Oxenfurt has been a bit underwhelming, both in terms of story (at least it had Radovid) and especially in terms of gameplay and activities. I mean that fairly big area that is the Academy, which is inaccessible (without exploits at least) could have been used in the game but from the comments I've been reading it isn't at all. Maybe in the expansions? Anyway, severely underutilized.

It's a great fucking game. Just entered Oxenfurt and it's a great city but nothing to do there or almost nothing so that is absolutely bullshit. Dogshit even.

Main and sidequests still get me XP so far....

Well there's an armorer (With a shop full of swords...) a barber and a inn and I think there's a cave and a general trader but it's a pretty big city so it's a handful of interesting areas and a few hundred locked doors. Razz
(Oxenfurt and Novigrad are very detailed though even if there's not that much you can interact with in them, well for Oxenfurt there's also contract board too with probably a few quests related to the city and surrounding area and one of the merchants sold paintbuckets which had "Quest item" in their description so that might be for some side quest.)

Was visiting Novigrad tourist_mode (since I'm afraid to continue with the XP-related bug until it's 100% fixed) and while playing around with the free camera to make panoramic shots I discovered this jolly fella:

There are a few quests later in the game that take place there. The first 10 hour DLC is supposed to be centered around the city, I wonder if it's cut content because the place feels pretty empty right now.

Checked some of my earlier manual saves at key points in the game. Going back as far as level 10, all of the main quests seem to be affected by the bug, and at least some of the side ones. I'm at 18 now and have progressed quite a bit through the main story, so I must've lost thousands of XP.
Since the (few) unaffected quests and activities did give me some XP, I've been attributing the somewhat slow leveling to Death March's reduced XP gain and some quests not giving XP by design. Stupid me, should've paid more attention to the pop-ups I guess.
But according to CDPR it "doesn't impact the game balance" so it's all good
