So, well, I'm not up to snuff with the newest hardware out there and I've read mixed things about the newest Intel CPUs etc. (at least compared to good old Sandy)

Friend of mine needs to upgrade the following:

CPU (has to be an Intel)
Board
RAM
GPX Card (has to be an NVidia)

His budget is 1000€ absolute maximum, less would be highly preferred. Target should be a decent enough gaming performance that lasts a couple of years.

If someone wouldn't mind to give me recommendations to work with, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks man. Looks good so far. Something to work with. I hope 1-2 more people chime in to get some more ideas.

But a Xeon? Really? Got no clue about them nowadays but I remember them more to be like workstation CPUs. I7 not worth it? Interesting though, seems to be no problem nowadays anymore.

Btw, Case, HDD and stuff aren't needed. Only what I listed above.

that xeon should be like an i7 without onboard gpu.
if it will keep it mostly on stock, is a great cpu.
for serious oc it needs an i series.
if i'm not mistaking another advantage vs i5 is hyperthreading. not sure about it, i'm not following hardware news to close.

Yeah, I've read up on it and a Xeon is truly an option. There is one problem though. The upgrade should last as long as possible and I'm not sure with the OC on Xeons. I told him about it and he's kinda unconclusive. Being able to OC the CPU should make it viable for some extended time.

Can you OC the Xeon though? If yes, it definitely would be an option. Hell, personally, I'd go for it but like I said, this isn't for me and not my decision.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: you don't need to. A comparable i5 K version with enough OC potential is in same pricerange and then you have to think of better cooling (WC)... that Xeon is the non-plus-ultra choice for budget systems. It "OC"s itself up to 3.8 Ghz I think boostclock and that's plenty. Believe me.

Allright, like I said, to me personally it sounds like a really really good choice. I'll pass it to him and will explain to him what you just said. Hell, it even has Turbo basicly so he should stop being a bitch Laughing

Yeah, fuck that harddrive. Consider looking out for external harddrives. Most of them have WD Green's inside of them, and they're usually a ton cheaper than a traditional harddrive for some reason. Consider going for a ZOTAC GPU for that 5 year warranty, or an R9 290X while the stores are dumping their prices. Don't skimp out on the PSU either, it's the sole thing that determines the longevity of the entire system.

would change the board for a asrock h97 pro4, cpu cooler to alpenfön ben nevis and finally the vga card to the msi 970 gaming g4. if your friend wants oc you need a z board and a k cpu.

I personally got an EVGA 970 FTW ACX2.0+, what's better about the MSI G4?

oh damn not the "best cooling system" argument again. there is no significant cooling different between any major manufacturer. all big players offer nearly identical cooling performance.

also, i don't know about everywhere in europe, but in my country EVGA only offers 2 year warranty, compared to 3 years for all other brands. so screw them.

I think it's 3 years over here set by them +2 additional if you register the product which sums up 5 years. Not sure if there is something sketchy going on with that though.

Come to this thread. See Paxsali posting my system. Fucking asshole, that is MY SYSTEM!

Oh and it runs everything just fucking great Very Happy The Xeon is basically an i7 without the gfx chip. But look, there is janz who recommended the cpu to me in the first place.

The 970 GTX SC is very fast and very silent. And if I remember correctly I got 5 year warranty for free. My wife bought me the card like 2-3 months ago. Now they give you the a gamecode for witcher 3 and the latest batman title aswell AND you'll get a free backplate for your gfx card from evga.

Yup, very happy with my 970 SSC too, got Witcher3, Batman Arkham Knight and a backplate ontop of that too. Also the warranty.

So anyway, my buddy is thrilled and wants me to thank you guys for your help. He's upgrading from a first generation i5 dual core and 560TI.

And ofc, a big thanks frome me too. Have to keep that Xeon stuff in mind when I'm gonna upgrade myself. Whenever that will be. Will be riding that i5-2500k of mine till it's dead I think because it's still so good. Doesn't break a sweat with all current games which I can tell since I upgraded my GPU recently. Very Happy

oehm nope? the i7 pedant to the xeon 1231v3 would be the i7-4770 which is atleast 50 euros more. but yes prices gone up lately especially in europe cause of the shitty euro/dollar exchange. last year in july/august you got that sweet xeon for less than 200 euros, now its minimum 250
