Would you go for "smooth" 30 fps ultra or 60 fps medium-high"custom" quality? Tbh I always feel bad when I have to turn down settings (MSAA and the likes excluded) lol so for me it's kinda a hard choice.

In an RPG, if the higher settings did make a noticeable change, I'd go for 30fps with highest settings. I'm someone who is used to playing at sub 20 because my PCs were crap mostly when I was young though.

Usually 40+ are certainly enough in an rpg but no vsync hurts. Especially in GTA 5 so I'd like to activate vsync in Witcher which means I need 50fps +! Difficult...

Yeah.same here.. however W3 is action rpg, so fps difference will be quite noticeable .

I mean if you are playing in 1080p (mostly also in 1440p) MSAA is everything! Or you use the higher res simulation from Nvidia Amd and you go to 1600p-2160p and shit....otherwise MSAA is everything!

There is no "smooth" at 30fps, and no, I wouldn't choose 30fps Ultra over 60fps high.

~edit~

Oh, unless you meant "smooth" as in; locked 30 and not janky 30>40>52>60>59>30>etc etc... in which case, yes, I see your point. I had to do that with DAI at one point; locking the framerate to 30 because it simply couldn't sustain perfect 60 without turning everything into a 360 version grinhurt I'd rather have locked 30 than fluctuating stuttering crap alternating between 30 and 60 and everything in between.

To be fair, depends on the game. Racing games feel ok at 30 because they don't have brisk changes in camera movement/direction and characters quickly moving from one opponent to the other and dodging/swinging/etc.

On the other hand, third person action games are among the ones that feel much better at higher framerate (together with fighting games and online shooters).

This having been said, I can't wait to play TW3 in glorious 720p low detail - 30fps with my shitty laptop Laughing Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad

Have you played Forza Horizon 2 before saying that it's 30 FPS isnt smooth? I'm not saying that 30 FPS is always smooth, on the contrary. But in some cases, rare cases, it can be alright.

Like in my exemple, FH2 feels very 60 FPSish even though it's 30. May be motion blur or some other trickery magic, but it's nice and smooth enough

I don't need to play Game A to know that Framerate B isn't smooth. You may be deceived but I wouldn't be.

well... 30fps can be ok with controller, if motion blur is well implemented. Like Dark Souls or Alan Wake

I fixed that for you, I hope you don't mind Smile I notice 30/60 with ease, even on 2D platformer titles like Ronin, where it just feels uncomfortable. That's not to say I *can't* play games in 30 (I play a lot of PS1/PS2 games all the time) but I absolutely categorically *prefer* 60 and I *feel* when it's at 30.

Aye, it can be okay.. that I agree with. What I don't agree with is the notion that there's "no difference" or "some games you don't feel it"

WEll there IS a difference but 30 with good motion blur and highest graphics or 60 with lowered graphics ? That depends on a game ofc.

Witcher is a mouse and keyboard game so 60.... but since it can be played with a controller, it remains to be seen if graphics are so awesome, so it's worth locking to 30

You can sort of accept lower framerates as long you never get to see what it looks and feels like at higher ones.

I have been playing XCOM:EW downsampling from a sub 4K resolution with it being locked at 60 FPS and seemed all good, but just yesterday my screen glitched out and it switched back to the native 1080p at 120FPS - didn't even take me two seconds to decide to keep it that way. It's a turn-based game and yet it feels so much better. And this is a 120 vs 60 comparison, mind you.

Once you get a taste of what it can be, even 60 FPS seems like a barely acceptable minimum and 30FPS is just plain laughable as a "smooth" playing experience.
