So, I finally gave in and bought a new machine.

4790K @ stock , Asus Z97-A mobo, 16GB Corsair Vengeance LowProfile @ 1600 mhz, 750W bronze certified power (Some, 100€ BeQuiet PSU), Asus Strix 980 OC...

And it hardlocks a LOT if I keep bios settings at default. (It hardlocks even in Bios). Rage

I managed to make it seemingly stable by downlocking the CPU down to 3.8GhZ and disabling turbo, I 've verified the memory chips (unless ALL of them are broken Razz) and I've verified it's not some weird GPU connection issue.

So, chances are, PSU, Mobo and CPU I think....

I'll be able to verify the PSU today, but mobo and cpu I've no chance of verifying. (Can it in anyway be the harddrives? as it did not hardlock when I was installing windows.)

I have updated bios also. (I also ran MemTest, 0 errors)

Anyone got any ideas what to do?

Intel Core I-9 9900K @ stock, ASUS Z 390A MoBo, 32GB 3.6GHz, Zotac 3090 | BeQuiet 1000W PSU, Be Quiet Dark Base Pro 900 case, 49" Samsung G9

why the fuck 750w psu? even with massive oc a good 550w would be more than enough.

ok you checked the ram? ran memtest with every modul as single installation for atleast 6-8 hours? if yes
->
if the config crashes even in the uefi theres something wrong, think you have no change except changing the parts one after one. so first different psu (would go for that cause i think that might be the reason), then board and if that still fucks up the cpu is broken (most likely)

Honestly, sounds like a faulty mobo (as i've had same issues), i would get that swapped first.

for 119€ you could have gotten the XFX 520W passive, fully modular, 80+ Platinum and it would be nice & quiet and still enough including OC.

And btw... buying a Devil's Canyon 4790K and DOWNCLOCKING it from 4.0 to 3.8 is flatout RETARDED, no offense...

You can go straight to 4.5 with NO problems regarding temperature or voltage.
(probably even higher, but I'm not familiar with Devil's Canyons...)

With the PSU I had really few options, which I would not have had to wait for weeks.
The shop had good selection of everything, except PSUs.

And 0 platinum PSUs available.

And obviously I'm not going to downclock my CPU to get it running stable, it was more of clue for what could be wrong.

However, I'll be picking up Noctua dh15 or some such + complaining about the crap at the shop I bought the pieces from, after work.

However, about overclocking, it, with stock cooler, no way I could OC it. It goes over 90c when it's running at 4.4 (when I get it to run a while without crashing at that level)

What's the bios version?

Looking at Asus website there's two Z97-A motherboards, one with USB 3.1 and another (older?) without.

http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=1&m=Z97-A&hashedid=ic9YbXVua78KEzSH

http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=1&m=Z97-A%2fUSB+3.1&hashedid=qknJcvw1wZXqSbDn

Quote:

Z97-A BIOS 2205
1. Implement 5th-Generation Intel Core Processors code
*Full support of the new CPU requires necessary driver updates.
2. Support ASUS USB 3.1 PCIE add-on card
3. Support NVMe

The CPU thing in the changelog is why I'm asking, also did you update via the bios or via the USB connection with a USB stick? (better)

USB Stick (I hardlocked during update and had to recover it even Smile )
I have the one Bios, you mentioned.
The non usb 3.1

Noctua DH15 is almost as good as some crappy 240mm WC solutions.

You should go methologically:

(0. reset all BIOS options to default, EDIT: Upgrade BIOS to latest version)

1. test bootup with no PCIe cards, only the CPU and 1 RAM dimm and do memorytest

2. test the same as 1. with the other RAM dimms

when all the RAM seems to be ok,

3. test the same as 1. with CPU and all RAM dimms installed

4. test the same as 3. with Graphicscard installed

5. test the same as 4. with Harddisks attached

and so on...

Don't use your OS for these tests, use a USB Stick with a Linux Live Distro.

The problem is that the crashing takes sometimes very, very long if I don't stress the system.
(While sometimes it's instant in the bios.)

Soo... I even had it running successfully for 6 hours with the 4.0 clocks, while playing minecraft.

GTA always crashes it quite fast. (I've verified that heat does not go totally out of control while playing). However GTA pushes the CPU and GPU both to quite high usage, so the PSU must work harder then.

I've verified the memories also by using the memory from my old desktop, and it still crashes (old desktop runs totally stable).

So I think the memory chip itself can be ruled out. (of course the slots themselves could somehow be broken, but it's the broken mobo, not memory Razz )

Only card I have is the GPU, and I've tried without it.

A friend of mine upgraded the pc of his brother recently and it was crashing. Took him a while to find out that the SATA cable was causing it. Sometimes it's those little things causing havoc and doesn't even help to be a hardware guru, because this needs some kind of random trying and luck to find such cause.

Process of elimination always works best Smile

Run the board (out of the case) with the bare minimum of components, one stick of RAM, one HDD, onboard GPU, etc, then begin adding till you find the culprit. Another PSU to hand would be helpful also, as would different RAM.

Set BIOS on defaults, reseat the CPU, checking no socket pins are bent, and check the heat sink is fitted correctly and even on all sides.

Have spare SATA cables for testing alternatively also.

Ok, seems to be either mobo or cpu....

I now tried with different psu and everything ran well until I ran prime95 on 'max power consumption' mode, locked within seconds.

And these 2 I cannot rule out in anyway, so I'll be returning mobo to shop tomorrow and see if it's fixed, if not I'll have to return the cpu which will take then ages. They send it to Intel who verifies it has not been overclocked

Uhm. you are allowed to OC a "k" processor?! So why are they making a big deal out of it?!

How you can even see if CPU has been overclocked? Laughing Its a K model, its meant to be OC´d.

Ok, it was a faulty mobo, I got a new one yesterday and it's running perfectly.
