It's not as if Kiefer sounds any better. In every single role he sounds the same. Every single emotion or tone of voice sounds the same. Using a known Hollywood actor is lame. | he did a good job in ground zeroes, i'm very happy with him. he has a perfect rough voice for an aging big boss. Kojima picked wisely, imo.

At best you will get a 1 minute clip of Hayter playing a young Snake or something at the end of the game to please the hayters. To be realistic though even this is unlikely to happen.
Anything more, like Hayter actually voicing Big Boss and everything being a ruse or whatever? No chance.
It's not the first franchise in recent years which changed voice actors, despite complaints by the fanbase, either and the reason always ends up being a mix of "we love Hollywood" and "we need someone who knows how to act for our cutscenes rather than just reading lines".
It's not such a big mystery.
Having said all that I didn't like Sutherland but I also have to recognize that since MGS3 Hayter is getting worse and worse.

No, I don't just mean Kiefer sounds like Kiefer.
Voice actors (talented ones, who actually specialise in voice acting) can cover off a vast amount of characters and are good at expressing a wide range of emotions, but that would have been taken as read if you had comprehended or acknowledged the four points I made instead of just focusing on the one. |
Different styles of acting. Some are jack of all trades, while others are only better at one type of acting. I don't think Kiefer is the greatest actor, voice or otherwise, but I think here he fits well. I think he has a medical problem which narrows his range, especially in the last ~10 years.
Also, how is Ironside any better in that regard? He too is a monotone actor. He's great at what he does, but he too is not a jack of all trades, in both voice acting, and his broader career as well.

Well, thank goodness you're not calling the shots, then.
Quote: | If others could re-voiceover an entire AAA game within months before its release (Hitman), then something like that isn't too unlikely |
Stop doing this to yourself. David Hayter is not going to be Big Boss in The Phantom Pain, and most normal people don't care.
The kind of people holding out hope that it will be Hayter are believing the same kind of self-delusional nonsense as the people desperately clinging to the idea that the Kojima/Konami drama is a publicity stunt. You're only hurting yourselves by forcing yourselves to believe in this dreamworld.

Quote: | So with that being said, and with keeping what you quoted in mind, you're an advocate for using people whose only 'talent' is being well recognised? |
A...are you suggesting that just because I quoted something you said, that I must somehow inherently agree with and reinforce everything you said in the first place (keeping in mind that the exact and only reason that I quoted you was to disagree with you)? That is such a bizarre leap in reason, and such a laughably false logical fallacy, that I don't think there is even a name for it in common debate terminology. Spin? Please. Listen to yourself.
To be absolutely pedantically belaboringly clear though, for those that need it: I think that Sutherland's acting abilities are better suited for this role than David Hayter, and that the performance will be far better and more resonant for it, and I'm glad that the fans who can't accept change aren't in charge of this game. I don't need this game, made nearly 20 years later and literally starring a different character, to have the same monotone voice actor that I thought was the coolest, most grizzled thing ever...back when I was a teenager. Is that clear enough for you?

So what you're saying is that it wouldn't be my fault that you jump to totally bewildering conclusions, if I was faster? You took an unreasonable leap of logic and I called you on it. That should be that.
Quote: | The point still stands; he landed the job because he's famous, not because he has an exceptional ability to voice act, |
He landed the job because he is famous, and a competent actor. Those things are not mutually exclusive.
My point is that I don't think it would have been so much better for Hayter to automatically land the job simply because he's done it before. It's a different role, now. Think of it this way: if/when they make a live-action Metal Gear Solid movie, would you expect them to actually cast David Hayter to play Snake on-screen? Of course not. He's not fit for that. Or if that's too much of a stretch, then how about this: if an MGS game was to have a flashback to Big Boss as a 12-year-old boy, would you freak out if Hayter didn't voice him for that? Of course not. Again, he's not suited for that. Just like I don't think he's automatically suited to be the best choice for Big Boss, at the exact time in his life where everything completely descends into madness.
Hayter, in his portrayals of Snake, never had to do much emoting other than repeating things people just said to him, but in the form of a question (Typical MGS script - Col Campbell: "Snake, you just keep repeating everything I say, but as a question!" Snake: "As a question?!?"), and "Blah blah blah battlefields, blah blah the mission, blah blah blah soldiers, duty, acronyms blah". It's worked so far, but MGSV seems to be trying new things that call for new approaches to a lot more than just voice acting.
It's subtle things, that call for more nuanced delivery. A tiny example: listen to BB telling saying "Kaz, it's me" as he rescues Miller in the Sins of the Father trailer, realizing that in the time it's taken him to reach his comrade, Miller has been horrifically disfigured and dismembered. The guilt of this event will haunt BB forever; if only he'd been there sooner. There's a subtle tone of remorseful apology to it that really sells the feeling of what's going on in just three words. Now imagine it in Hayter's voice. The exact same grumbling mixed with endlessly sounding mildly confused-yet-confident that Hayter delivers for everything from shouting matches with his mortal enemies, to sullenly soliloquizing about the lot of a soldier, to trying to seduce women. It just wouldn't be the same.
And that's okay, because so far, that mostly been how MGS cutscenes have played out. MGSV is going for something new after 17 years. It's about time. This game is not supposed to be a nostalgia trip.

Good grief. GAF is gonna GAF, I guess. That kind of insanity makes people who believe in aliens building the pyramids and lizard people who live underground seem normal.

Leave it to GAF to fuck things up. http://www.kotaku.co.uk/2015/04/22/meet-the-head-transplant-doctor-at-the-centre-of-a-metal-gear-solid-conspiracy
The real doctor got wind of this and he says he has no idea of being involved in any video games (well.. duh) but he now believes they used his likeness and he is asking to be compensated or he might sue them.
Quote: | “I went to the Polizia Postale [the authority in charge of this kind of thing here in Italy] and filed a complaint towards Mr.Kojima. There is also a Twitter account that is not mine, so I reported this to the Police too, they will now investigate both the matters. In the meantime my lawyer is sending a letter to the Japanese company [Konami] to ask for compensation [for using my image without permission].”
He mentioned this more than a few times during our phonecall. He also seemed very interested in how much Metal Gear Solid V might be worth. At one point, suddenly asked me: “By the way, do you know how much this game is going to cost? And how many copies will it sell?” When I estimated that it’ll sell maybe 4 million units at 60 euros a pop, he started laughing.
“Wow!!! Sixty Euros? Multiplied by 4 or 5 MILLION? That would cover the whole operation for Valery and then some! We're talking about an insane amount of money!” |
On one hand, serves Konami right for firing Kojima.
On the other hand if MGS gets delayed, tough luck, fanboiiiis.
