|

Survey:http://gamearts.pgtb.me/G11qsW
Quote: | Publisher GungHo Online Entertainment America launched a questionnaire this morning surveying fan interest in IPs developed by Game Arts, including role-playing series Grandia, Lunar, and more.
The survey, available here, asks the basics up front: which platforms you use, where you find your video game news, and what game genres are your favorites. Several questions specifically reference PC ports, namely which PC digital distribution service you prefer and what new features are most important to you when purchasing updated ports of game.
Game Arts, which became a GungHo subsidiary in 2004, may be best known for its work on RPGs like the Lunar and Grandia series. The studio also produced the mech-focused Gungriffon series, and most recently in 2012, puzzle title Dokuro. GungHo could be testing the waters with this survey to gauge fan interest in these games, possibly paving the way for remastered ports or new franchise titles.
In recent years, GungHo has brought Game Arts' original Grandia, Lunar: Silver Star Story and Ragnarok Odyssey to PlayStation Network for Sony’s current consoles. |

Wait, there was a Grandia 3? Didn't even know. I'd sure like to see proper/decent ports of all of them on PC, although I wouldn't be holding my breath. This seems like a "Sega made some easy cash porting ancient console games, what do we have in the cupboard?" kind of deal.

I wouldn't mind ports of Grandia but with proper videos. The magic animations in G2 was so low resolutions it hurt. Otherwise awesome game.

I know on the pirated DC version that the videos were downsampled to fit onto DVDs, although I assume the originals were only 640x480 at most anyway.

Dreamcast didn't use DVDs it used GD-ROMs http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/GD-ROM
but yes you are talking about the first echelon release, later there was some 3 cd rips
which worked and didn't have anything downsampled.
I tried it in my real Dreamcast some time ago(i do have a original disk but it's a bit scratched) and they worked fine, it also looks great in NullDC but there are some small annoyances with the shadows not working as they should, i wish someone would make a better DC emu since all projects seem to have died out ages ago.

Demul is pretty good too, it works on some games where NullDC has issues, and vice versa. Makaron used to be the most "accurate" emulator, but dknute has long since abandoned it in favour of Naomi and pushing his GDemu addon for real Dreamcasts.

Grandia II is coming to Steam:
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/acclaimed-dreamcast-rpg-grandia-ii-coming-to-steam/1100-6427252/
Quote: | After collecting "enthusiastic feedback" from a survey launched in April, GungHo Online Entertainment America will bring classic role-playing game Grandia II to Steam for Windows PC, the company told GameSpot today.
Grandia II for Steam is being remastered using the game's Dreamcast version, which was published in 2000. In addition to an HD visual upgrade, Grandia II on Steam will have both mouse and keyboard and gamepad support as well as Steam achievements and Trading Cards.
The survey GungHo shared last month focused on properties by Game Arts, the studio behind the much-beloved JRPG series Grandia and Lunar, with several questions specifically referencing interest in PC games. Responses indicating a desire for a remastered Grandia II were "overwhelming," according to GungHo, so the company has chosen to move forward with the port. |

The old "we threw out the shoe box we kept the source code disks in" excuse probably. Well that and of course the simple fact that an existing port is already ported, the hard work is done. A "HD upgrade" is a piece of piss to sub-contract out to a few artists.

Yeah, I'm not holding my breath. I assume all the pre-rendered movies for spells and stuff will still be the original SD ones.
