Biggest thing I disliked about Frostbite is it runs like crap often.

Agreed, however KOTOR 1 was just fine and comparable with Mass Effect 1. KOTOR 2 was unfinished, not bad but light years away from mass effect series |
Yeah I also liked KOTOR2 the best, mainly because of the much richer gameplay (thanks to Obsidian), but IMO both are way superior to any ME game, and especially the first one.

There's nothing richer gameplay-wise about TSL. It's exactly the same as the first game. You could argue you prefer the NPCs, or the writing in general, but that has nothing to do with gameplay.

There were some gameplay changes, mainly to combat (lightsaber/force forms and so on) and crafting (it was made more complex than it was in the first game). One could also argue that it's hard to talk about gameplay in an RPG without at least considering stuff like writing or NPCs. But other than that, yeah, they were pretty much indentical.
Personally I consider TSL the best SW game ever made. Not because it was so much better than the first one (objectively - it probably wasn't), but because it was different - it aimed for something more than yet another, typical SW story about the Jedi and the Sith. It tried - and as far as I'm concerned, succeded - to show Star Wars world from a different perspective. One less focused on good and evil and more interested in showing human nature instead. It's a hard thing to do in a world designed to be black and white and all the more worthwile because of that. Sadly, the game was rough and unfinished - but considering conditions in which Obsidian had to work, it's still amazing what they were able to achieve.

I didn't care that much for the story and actually, I even said after finishing KOTOR2 (2013) that I thought the story in the first game was much better written. There were a few fantastic characters in the second game though, like Kreia. And yeah the generally darker tone made it interesting but the final result didn't seem that good to me in terms of writing.
Now, what really made the game standout for me was the much improved gameplay derived from changes that might seem subtle to most people, but that in the end implied a much more elaborate branching and decision system that felt so much more meaningful while you were playing, compared to the first KOTOR. I remember commenting this multiple times to our fellow humper Vechter while playing the game. Same goes for the different characters/classes and abilities of the characters at your disposal for each mission, I could notice very quickly how Obsidian put great thought into them so they made me carefully choose which characters to go with for each single mission, as in the first game I rarely bothered too much choosing who to go with. The gameplay mechanics in general were clearly improved in the second game, irrespective if there were new elements added or not, what I meant is that they worked much much better. Same goes for the quest system, in the end I got the impression that Obsidian took a perfectionist approach to the game mechanics and wanted them to stand out compared to the first game. Take into account for all this that I played both games during the same year (2013) so it was really easy for me to spot those improvements.
So yeah, I definitely can't agree with the statment that both games in the series are "indentical". It actually feels like an insult towards Obsidian if you ask me
EDIT: Sorry for the out topic. Maybe we should have bumped the KOTOR 3 thread with this discussion

Loved the first one for the sense of exploration, the second one for the build up towards the finale like vagonite said.
For the third one I'm still not sure if it added anything. The exploration was poorly done like in the second one or non existent, the rest we're at the same level as the second one but without the atmosphere and exposition.
And yeah....there's that God awful ending that made me lose all hope in Bioware.

Oh boy, now this is some fun information for us Mass Effect fans that are still excited despite a distinct lack of Mass Effect 4 content having been made available. Our trusted friend Twitter has once again allowed all members of the Mass Effect team to share some news amongst the masses.
First of all, Chris Wynn, the Senior Development Director for Mass Effect has revealed that the characters in the next game will have insane amount of details. “Busy showing and telling the latest Mass Effect progress to the team. The amount of detail on the characters is insane,” he stated on Twitter. He also assured fans that work on Frostbite, the engine the game is running on, is going just fine.
Bioware are not only working on the next Mass Effect, they are also busy with their new secret IP. Preston Watamaniuk, a Senior Creative Director with BioWare who is currently working on the secret project, stated that they have started to overcome complicated design issues in the game. “This last week yielded some great progress on some complicated design issues. Very exciting.” Also working on the secret project is writer Jay Watamaniuk, who revealed that he has written a great deal of the game’s story already.
Hopefully we will have more information in the coming months as we approach E3.

You got me excited with the long text and the only piece of (non-)news is that the characters will have "insane" (lol, no) amount of detail.

I thought they weren't making Mass Effect 4 but a spin-off based on the universe taking place way before events of the trilogy, but eh okay then.

Where did you read that? So far all Bioware have said is that it's a new story and not involving Shepard, I don't think they've given any specifics yet.

Hmmm I actually recall something like that as well. Same universe and before/during the events of the first 3 ME's.
But wouldn't surprise me if its bullshit, not like journalism throws facts around these days

Open world Mass Effect. inb4 we fall to sleep of boredom.
You can explore empty wastes, where with a telescope you can spot shining reaper fragments. Collecting them progressively opens up a boring dungeon, and if you collected all 585, then you can have some loot that you outcrafted 10 hours prior to that.
Also important are elder reaper fights, where you can target the limbs of hte reaper, not just the body itself - but this will have no impact on gameplay at all.
You will also have tactical camera, but you can operate it only if you have a controller, and can zoom all the way out to about one whole meter above the head of a controlled character.
The team has debated a lot about this, but has come to the conclusion, that you will have no heterosexual companions, because in the future we are beyond that stuff. Quadradyke, your first companion for example identifies as attack helicopter, when it comes to its gender.

Sequel is the only logical sense imo. If they were to put it happening before the ME 1-3, it would have no meaning, because the choices you make would affect the world that has already been built by you in the previous games.

Wouldn't surprise me if it was actually true. That Inquisition survey mentioned in that thread was basically 90% accurate compared to what ended up in the finished game. But ugh, it sounds like a combination of the worst elements of ME3 and Inquisition. And wave combat, jesus christ they still keep using that fucking shit.

"As you explore this sprawling series of solar systems (over 4x the size of Mass Effect 3)"
Sweet, 4 times as many randomly generated generic planets!

I take that as 4 times the landmass/level size, not 4 times the number of planets. Think of some cross between ME2 and 3's small combat zones with ME1 and DA Inquisition's open planets/regions. Probably a bunch of small outposts/POIs scattered around a large map that you drive between in the Mako.

If this is true, then where will be the big sprawling cities?
All i'm reading about is uninhabited planets and collecting resources and shit, maybe the "undefined" races will have them, which could be cool.
