Yup. Also how often don't we hear about "this time the AI will be smarter, work together as units etc" in games and yet they end up seemingly more stupid.
I get programming AI is fucking hard, but man, I wish they'd stop saying that shit when they can't back it up.
I guess they won't be 'worse' than on par with the ones in 3, but still, not going to hope for long strides.

Programming competent AI is not that hard, problem with competent AI is, they'd fucking massacre the player pretty fast.
Imagine, if you take out an NPC, others call in, he doesn't respond, then they do a tactical sweep and clear for you. Would be almost impossible to take them out, if they coordinated.
What's REALLY hard in AI programming, is getting the challenge just right. Make them seem lifelike, but still relatively easy to dispatch, or the derps would be frustrated.
It's a long time dream of mine, when difficulty settings don't influence NPC health or stats, (like pinpoint accuracy), but they influence smarts.

The AI programmer of FEAR1 later on went to MIT for post graduate studies in AI.
1 and 2 are still amazing.

Let's see: Half Life, F.E.A.R. and the original FarCry had a rather decent AI. I seriously doubt that Eidos Montreal can do something comparable.

I'd believe programming a truly competent and realistic AI is actually quite hard. You have to simulate command hierarchies, psychological factors, take into account dynamically changing environments, AI beliefs vs AI knowledge and much more.
Even if you can code it, it would still use quite a big chunk of performance and RAM for required search spaces.

Never played Unreal? The Skaarj are better than all those.

Can't remember tha AI in Unreal being anything special at all, but it's been a while.

If by "better", you meant "running toward the player and shooting", then sure. Then again, I don't remember anything special in HL1 either.

HL1 had decent AI for the Combine soldiers. They covered each other and were pretty good at throwing grednades. FEAR had the best FPS AI I've ever seen but it seemed that they had specific flanking routes pre-programmed and many of the levels made it hard for you to keep your back against the wall, so you constantly felt threatened. If you found a spot they could not flank they eventually just ran at you one by one.

Sin317-"im 31 years old and still surprised at how much shit comes out of my ass actually ..."
SteamDRM-"Call of Duty is the symbol of the true perfection in every aspect. Call of Duty games are like Mozart's/Beethoven's symphonies"
deadpoetic-"are you new to the cyberspace?"

Well, you guys should replay unreal 1 and check out the Skaarj AI. they strafe, roll, avoid projectiles, can do platforming, escape when wounded.
