Hello, Claude here, with another bitching because frankly I need to because otherwise I will hit someone. Got promoted to IT Technician, now I'm alone along with an SQL developer but she doesn't know IT stuff such as how to set a cisco ip communicator. Anyway, the guy that did my "training" was supposed to go to another job but they canceled and he wanted to come back but the CEO refused on account of his own dickishness. So he taught me all of the stuff he was supposed to wrong, on purpose, to secure his job I guess, but it backfired for him. Anyway, the whole call center department is filled with PC's from freakin 2003, a cisco interface that was made for freakin Windows 98 because it only works when I access it if I change the user agent to IE 7 and the computers upstairs are breaking down because the mail server is running such an outdated version of fedora and squid that it only stores what's in inbox, everything else is stored locally, on PC's. Que a big fucking fat pst file that's 42gb's in size, what the fuck. Stops working today, obviously, because it's an intel pentium with 2gb's of ram and not a freakin xeon with M.2 ssd's and 16 gigs of ram so that it could handle 4 different e-mail accounts with each data file weighing in at least 5 gigs. The best part? They're so corrupted, archiving and compressing doesn't even work because yeah, errors. Whenever I bring up this whole fucking ordeal they expect for me to snap my fingers and make it work, what the fuck. And the balls to e-mail me my work is not productive and lacks quality? Holy shit, let me produce x99 systems for your fucking 42gb's data file.

tl;dr: alone in IT without a manager, have to take care of at least 70 PC's and maintain a network so fragile it breaks if you look wrong at it while I'm expected to fix them instantly.

Hehe, sounds like quite the mess.
On the plus side it is quite a challenge which could be fun. Make a plan, present it and be vocal on how the place needs to be redone for it to work.

If they aren't open to real solutions... well ride it out as long as possible or find a better job.
It's massively frustrating if you can't do a thing and you just get shit for them not acting tho :/

There's literally no budget for upgrades and if I even change let's say, the password for the admin user on the script server, the whole thing stops working even though the agents use a whole other user for their work. Anyway, it's literally so old, it could have kids. Gonna ride it out I guess.

why do you access cisco equipment trough ie ?
my email sever is a p4 with 1 gb ram, 2x1 terra raid hdd and it works fine (centos + roundcube) serving ~50 people (and is doing other stuff to). ofcourse no sane admin would allow 40gb attachments (on mine accounts are capped at 1gb, with 50MB file limit). for big files you should have a file server.

I have no experience with cisco equipment and that's how the guy before me has shown me how to add extensions, remove incoming calls from extensions, etc. We should switch soon to an active directory and change the mail and security gateway servers, but that's been taking forever and it probably won't be changed by the time they fire or demote me.And I was talking about a 40gb data file where e-mails were stored locally on an employee's PC, not 40gb attachments. I feel so hopeless, tbh, because there's no network topology chart or something so I would know where to start from and tbh, networking has never been my forte.

well, if you are serious getting into cisco equipments i would say to learn at least ccna. setup them up trough browser is kinda a creepy way yo do them if you have no idea what is behind. (from my pov). in this particular case (cisco) i prefer to write some text vs a click in browser, i use browser only to see if everything is ok. reports/states/ ...

no idea what you were saying with que a 42 gb file then Smile

well, what i would do.
get a pen and paper, make a network topology, servers whatever, put it in something like visio. it will help a lot with network/servers diagnostics.

get a file with all the common complains, make a plan. see how much of those complains are software related how much are hardware related. try to work around hardware related. for example unless your email server needs to service 1000 people, you dont need a quadcore for it. hell, i used a p2 for years for the same job i have now a p4. until i added some spam filters he was doing well. would i use a quad core ? sure. but is more usefull to a database server for example. or for a developer workstation. it add nothing to my curently in full load 40% resource used email server (for 15 minute daily at 9 am).
with all the problems which you canot work with the curent software/hardware make a paper with issues and solutions proposal and give it to the man in charge.

Well, it's not ccna, it's cm 3.1, that's why I access it via a browser. Although the rest of what you posted sounds interesting, I will take it up with the parent company, seeing as how their it manager helped a lot more than the people here do.

yeah talk with him, but make sure you will be prepared to answer his questions. like you will say that the email server is acting funny, he will probably ask how you propose to fix it.

He already proposed, switch it to POP3, but that would mean EVRYTHING gets saved locally. My problem is that only the inbox contents are saved on the server, sent e-mails are saved on the local machines, thus the 42gb data file.

not sure if i understand you right.
pop3 is kinda the worst you can have.

imap is not doing what you want it ?
emails are on server and you can sync sent folder to.

or you can setup an exchange server, but is expensive, both hardware/software.

anyway, at this stage with hugeass sent folders you need to do some manual work if you want them on server.
from my part we keep important attachments on a file server, not on emails server. i dont see any point to fucktup my email server by synchronizing hugeass sent folders (most of the people are working here from like 8 years ago, so imagine how much they would have).

i have 2 rules :
1' business emails with important attachments are sent by a single emails address (like office@ or sales@ or support@) which is used by all people, and attachments+emails are automatically copied to fileserver, checked to make sure are not damaged and then deleted from email server 7 days later.
2' personal sent emails (from name@) are deleted after 7 days, people are responsible to make backups into personal folders on fileserver if they want to keep them.

Typical Romanian situation, everybody expects you to do a whip out of shit and if it pops, it's even better.

just go to everyones computer, sort their sent order on filesize, delete the top 50 mails and slap them with a fish and tell them they should not email attachments bigger then 1 mb, those should be shared via gdrive, to avoid exactly that problem, in our company u are not allowed to attached big files. Especialy not to send to a group.

and check their deleted items are emtpy, i once had 3000 items in my deleted thing saved on the server lol
