Got a 60 GB with 1/2 of the space free but XP refuses to defrag. The drive is 1/2 full of 4+ GB .ISO images and nothing else so I suppose that may be the problem. Anyone using a defrag other then MS's?

I don't even defrag my PC. Just move the unwated stuff to DVD or trash em.
If you hate it, ignore it.

j.herrer, thanks for the pic. Reliable? Does it have any problems in XP SP2 or services it installs. Require 15% of the drive space free in order to defrag? Also how does it deal with defrag on the system volume?
I would move to Diskeeper but don't like 2 facts:
1. Executive Software were the ones that wrote MS's scandisk!
2. Aside from a clunky interface I don't like the services it loads to use it.

I want to defrag but the last time I did on my old PC it messed up alot of my C:/ .. Shortcuts not working, Search on start menu freezing explorer.exe and stuff.. is it worth defragging my drives that have no OS, just pure data files?

Thanks herrer, think I will give it a shot this weekend.
baardhimself, were you using XP scandisk or some other tool? Aside from that, you don't need to be obsessive about defrag but you should try do it every 30+ days or so, if your drives are fragmented.

I would recomend Raxco PerfectDisk. I have been using it for quite a while and it does a much better job than the XP defrag.

Like Rite mentioned, you need to run scandisk to correct any possible errors before defragging.

Christ, how badly fragmented was it? Did you run a scandisk after to see if anything got hosed?

Try running chkdsk /f at the command prompt on the drive with issues. On reboot the file system is checked and corrected. Defrag should now work ok.

I use O&O defrag, works like a charm
You can select which form of defrag you want:
- optimized for access
- optimized for space
- blablabla
Alot of options included

Looks like a nice piece of software...
Really suprised more people are not using Diskeeper, I explained why I don't but I thought this was one of the more popular apps.

I use the same, has a nice "defrag on boot" option which for an added 30 secconds or so of boot time keeps your HDD's fully defragged!

I personally use PerfectDisk. It's slow, yeah, but it's effective. I just set it to schedule at 2:00AM every morning, and I never have to worry about it.

Just got O&O Defrag Professional Edition v8.0.1398. Using Team Z.W.T. keygen to try this out. It started and bitched about the OO Agent not able to connect (blocked it with the firewall). Instead of just getting off my back it loaded but would not display any drives. Dropped the firewall tried again and everything is good, even with the firewall back up. Hope that doesn't come back to bite me.
O&O Defrag is really nice. First thing I did was defrag a volume that XP would not touch. Used Stealth Mode and it worked great. Load XP's defrag to just check and see if it still saw fragmentation but it did not after O&O did it's thing. Lot's of options, going to have to play with this one.
Thanks for all the advice everyone!
