Ah cool, last thing I heard was that 1080 was going to be their maximum resolution. Good to see they changed their minds Smile

Guys, are there any better alternatives to DK2 available right now or within a couple of weeks with SDK? Need it for another commercial project coming this spring. Thanks.

Ya thinking will probably pick up The Vive, this really couldn't have panned out any better for Valve and HTC. The only thing that could have brought them down was Oculus releasing near same time with a higher rez display. Oculus will need to get their shit together on their input, Valve's holodeck like experience vs. sitting in chair = massive problems for Oculus if they don't fix it.

only problem now is not having 15ft x 15ft of space at home Sad

It's taking far too long from initial discussion to physical consumer hardware to maintain my excitement. Hell Micro$oft have more than piqued my interest in Holo, that looks infinitely way cooler than a facehugger alien on my head.

Yup, my excitement and anticipation for Rift has plummeted to near zero. Especially with the recent pushes for 75fps/90fps and the absolutely INSANE pricing on the Oculus/Samsung Gear VR. I have no doubt this isn't coming this year and when it finally does launch, the price is going to be massive.

people testing hololens says the fov is very limited (like 50°), but it's much better than oculus rift

seems like they all suffer the same problem, no way with the current hardware to fit enough computation power (+battery in accordance) while maintaining a power user friendly price for a good high resolution, smooth experience

I may be misremembering this but I believe Hololens is using retinal projection and not screens which is why the image quality is so much better. This is also why the FOV is worse. But I imagine that after a couple of generations of the hardware that it would be closer to what you can see with your eyes (as far as FOV is concerned).

And I've no doubt that Hololens AND Vive are going to be WAY more expensive than the Rift. I think people are going to be shocked at how much more. And they'll still buy it. I've delayed my plans on building a new system until the holidays now just to take advantage of it and buy a Vive as long as it will meet my requirements. I'll use it almost exclusively for flight simulation. Some of the cost will be offset by not having to buy multiple monitors or a projection system.

Hololens does not use retinal projection. Call me pessimistic but I highly doubt anything good will come out from that project, that recent demo was sketchy as hell IMO.

For retinal projection you want to look up Magic Leap. Not sure if there is any recent news about them but might be something to start getting hyped about. Old article about them thats worth a read - http://gizmodo.com/how-magic-leap-is-secretly-creating-a-new-alternate-rea-1660441103

It's pretty close to retinal projection...Unless they're just wordsmithing and it's really just a couple of fresnel lenses like everyone else.

Quote:
Microsoft has very vividly, but also only very vaguely described how the virtual images are being produced: A so-called "light engine", which has light particles bouncing around inside millions of times, emits the light towards two separate lenses (one for each eye), which consist of three layers of glass of three different primary colors (blue, green, red) and have "micro-thin" corrugated grooves on them. The light hits those layers and finally enters the eye in specific angles, intensities and colors, producing an image on the eye's retina.

That's why I personally think that Project Morpheus is in the best position to succeed.

Sony can develop the product to work on a single, fixed set of specifications (PS4) and so will be able create the largest potential consumer base from day one, without people having to shell out huge amounts of money (apart from the headset itself of course) to get it working.

We really should have a dedicated "Virtual Reality Tech" thread.. or.. well, rename this one. Whatever. Either way;

Virtuix are working alongside the engineers at Rice University and it's looking fantastic... very lightweight and I'm liking the clever idea of using air sacks rather than vibrations.

a: A room.
b: Microsoft's vision of reality.
c: Actual reality as viewed through the Holo

Basically it works, except only through a very narrow window directly in your direct front view. Not peripheral view.

It does have the 360 view, but if you forget where a hologram is, you have to scan the room to find it before you can walk towards it.

Pointless crap then.
