not bad but targeted at children it seems.
lotr was much better... and I've watched it as a child. |
Was actually what I was thinking, it barely gets a 5 from me (the new one)... it was so damn bad. The acting apart from a few, plotholes and lazy mechanics, irregular abilities from characters, inconsistent lore stuff, you could see when the extras were queued to move. Ridiculous/cringe worthy dialogues.
I never liked Lotr much, back then I thought it was rather childish already... but I really wonder how anyone who enjoys the books and the previous trilogy can be happy with this kind of crap.
So again a 5/10 (and that's me being generous )
Even made me go "What a shitty director" somewhere in the middle of the movie.

lotr movies were alot better overall, the only thing that was way better in the hobbit is the main character, bilbo is just so much better than fagdo, it also helped alot that he is played by martin freeman.

i like freeman, but i still think wood's frodo managed to get a more emotive response from me, and more often, than freemans bilbo did... maybe thats down to how the characters were written in the films, i dont know, but i still cared more about frodo and his journey and struggles than i did bilbos. I can barely recall any time i felt bilbo had a powerful moment, but i still remember frodos.

Well, the book (Hobbit) itself is more "childish" than LOTR books.
Anyways, I didn't like the Hobbit trilogy. 6/10. And it gets 6 thanx to CGI and Tauriel

Its not because something is aimed at children that it has to be crap overall. What the Hobbit (book) manages to do is introduce you to a world of wonder but give a sense of fear throuh looming evil (unnamed btw. which is psychologically important) and a sense of scale in those dark woods. (Which in the movie is really badly done) And when there is battle, there is blood (in your imagination at least).
So what the movie does is kill of both the magic and wonder and the sense of evil at the same time. The 48fps (or what was it) doesnt help at all, it makes it all look even cheesier. While the movie aims for a more realistic approach in the costumes, their characters become more 1-dimensional and goofy (and unbelievable) at the same time. The movie focuses on funny scenes and action while the book focuses (for obviious reasons) on exploration. And by adding "love" drama and other crap, the movie really shits on its content.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

That was one crazy hippie ride. Not exactly what I expected, but I still enjoyed what I saw. It lacked focus at times and the movie seemed to drag a bit too much, but good ol' Joaquin stoned Wolverine edition delivered the goods as usual, same for PTA when it comes to the atmosphere. You can breathe the 70s!

Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father - /10
This docu-movie officially classifies as unrateable.
Don't ever watch it, unless you want to feel a lot of genuine rage and frustration (and I truly mean it!). It's not graphic or anything like that, just discomforting. If anything, it's a depressing reminder to never stick your dick in crazy xD |
Dear Zachary is still the most devastating, depressive piece of art ever created. I made the "mistake" and watched it back then when it was released and it haunted me for weeks. It's by far the most powerful experience someone can get by watching a movie.
It's a 10/10 rated documentary but I really don't know if I can recommend it to anyone.

Amazing. Another masterpiece by Dolan and this is going to be a huge hit this year. He's the most talented director right now. The performances are simply out of this world.

Interstellar 8/10
Man.... this could have been so much better if the 'scientists' didn't make the most idiotic decisions.
In particular their first decision after the wormhole...
Spoiler: |
Their mission is pretty much over when they decide to visit that first planet.
But why!? Just to retrieve some data that supposedly indicates whether or not the planet is suitable for humans?
A planet orbiting a FUCKING BLACK HOLE? Where 1 hour spend is 7 years in the rest of the universe? And you still need to land there to know if its a suitable alternative for Earth??
They wasted 23+ years, and pretty much all their fuel, for nothing.
I understand they did it to show and explain the effects of gravity on space and time to the audience, and to progress the story, but it's handled pretty dumb.
|
Also, the graphics are great, but too many extreme close-ups of the ship and the crew and not enough epic wideshots of space. There's like one shot when they're orbiting Saturn in the beginning, and a couple with the black hole, but overall I really missed a couple of epic 10 minute Space Odyssey-like docking sequences.
The whole love thing wasn't actually that bad, the reviews make a lot more fuss about it than necessary. I only facepalmed during Anne Hathaway's speech, but I saw this unrelated to the ending of the movie, and the relationship between Cooper and his daughter.
Best element in the movie is TARS.
He reminded me a bit of Bender, especially with his comedy setting at 100%

Sorry for the uber-delayed answer Vech. I'd say they share the same way to make the viewer feel highly uncomfortable (the topic is different, though), but like Zip said, Zachary is even more effective because it's a documentary, and you get to know the real people and their unfiltered pain. Therefore, don't watch it if you're on a date
@fearwhatnow : agreed, great but not recommended. Sounds weird, but it's just like this.

Was it bad, no? Was it amazing, I don't think so.... It was the same story told the same way, with new actors and some nice CGI/Graphics.

Birdman - 7/10 - very well produced and directed, great acting performances. As a movie, I didn't like it much. I assume it was supposed to be satirical, making fun of Hollywood a bit, but I was mostly bored. If it didn't have this cast, I doubt I'd have finished it. I can only lol at the Oscar really.

Interstellar - 8/10
I don't know, the ending is so weird, story full of holes. And is that the best robot design, it looked like a folding table R2D2 is more convincing.

the robot design actually made sense, it was all about efficiency and less about superficial cool looks. it could move at high speeds and traverse all kinds of terrain, while r2d2 was extremely slow and had very limited movement.

Miss Meadows 5/10
Better than I expected but still not that great. I was mostly annoyed with how cheap it looked, story wise I thought it was interesting. It sure is a weird one, if they had a bit more quality to it I would have rated it a 6.
Interstellar 8/10
I quite liked it, for me it had a vibe that was a mix of 2001: A space odyssey and Contact... not as great as a mix between those two could have been tho... but still a pretty good movie. I liked the robots design and their interactions. Visually it looked nice, the science was there (bit over the top, but it's scifi after all).
Some of the things I disliked: Hathaway's character was weak, especially her dialogues (That love bit was... a bit derp), The last bit of the movie was wonkier than it should have been. Well some other stuff here and there. Reason why I could only give it an 8.
This is one I'll revisit tho, even with it flaws it filled my scifi taste.
Also... might be my limitation in thought, but the whole story felt a bit paradoxical in it's entirety. Couldn't wrap my head around it to explain it so it would make sense
