Pretty sure Zen bought through one game's exchange can only be spent in that game, and Zen bought for real-monies can be spent whereever.

So, do we have a fleet or something? It's really lonely by myself, I feel like playing a SP game, which I have no intention of doing.

Last post February 2014, is this game dead or what?
I'm just aimlessly running around, lvl 4, but I can't figure out how to use the new tailor system, so maybe someone can explain how to make equipped armors visible? All I know it's supposed to work through the tailor, but it's all so messy and confusing. When I equip the armor, it still shows the casual uniform instead of the shiny armor that I remember wearing couple of years ago when I tried the game for the first time...

Try right clicking on your armor on your character sheet and see if it allows you to show/disable visual or if it has a little eye indicator next to it click that so it doesn't have a line through it. I never displayed those armors and I know a lot was moved to the tailor in the various uniform sections, just when looking at the tailor, make sure to have show owned items checked so you don't have to search through them all.

I Googled a little and found out that they removed that little eye icon from the armors, although as you can see on the picture it's still there next to the weapon icon. I find it really strange that I can't see the armor right away after picking it up just to see what it looks like and there's no explanation whatsoever how to make it visible.
Someone said on the chat the armors become visible through promotions, so you can use first parts at lvl 10. I have no idea...
Here's what I see:

All my characters are in their 50s so I have everything unlocked that is normally available to them but if you change that drop down in the top right of your first picture to Uniform then pick Uniform - Jacket Tight for the first category you should see those old armors. You are currently in the Off Duty selection of clothes so you are only seeing those going by your posted pictures.

Just got back into the game again after three years of not playing. I played in multiple betas and pre-ordered the Collector's Edition back when it originally came out, also came back and played during the 2nd Anniversary Event for the free ship, but then nothing for three years. Got hooked pretty good this time. The game has definitely come a long way, a lot more polished and tons more to do. It's still pretty buggy at times and it's not the perfect Star Trek game but it does scratch that itch for the old school MMOer who has a taste for sci-fi. Got a few ships and spent some cash and generally having a good time mastering everything and exploring everything. Gonna get some old friends back into the game.
I'm American but there seems to be a lot of European players around; the fleet I got into, for example, seems to have a diverse roster. Quite interesting set of personalities. If anybody needs a fleet or any help or anything, you can let me know with a PM. The game can be pretty daunting for the uninitiated, I wouldn't call it hardcore but the leap from casual/newbie to regular is much larger than most games (DPS for the former can be 1K while it's 100K for the latter, for example...literally). Good time to check it out as new ships were introduced, huge event just got done with another rolling, and of course many people checking it out to pay respects for Nimoy.

For me when they raised the level cap to 60 with the last big Season update and did not give free upgrades on all my paid ships, it kind of made me not want to put as much time in as I had up to that point since they basically made all my hard work and money spent on items virtually worthless with the update and wanted me to pay again on the stuff I had already bought. I still run the events on one character now for the free item and to check them out but before I used to run it on a lot of characters over multiple factions and would spend some time in Trek daily running missions and STFs but them raising the cap to 60 really made me lose interest.
If you are a Trek fan, the story missions are cool to see what happened after all the shows and movies since the game takes place in the Prime universe and is still considered canon for Trek versus what is seen in the JJ Universe timeline with the reboot.

I have mixed feeling about delta rising. I still play STO from time to time.
What i like:
News mission with voice acting and cast from star-trek. Tuwok, 7of,9 Hary Kim, Doctor, Worf ... If you have long brake from STO there are new mission in romulan and borg story.
I don't like:
Item upgrading system cost a lot of dylithium.
Specialization cool idea bat requires too much experience and time to level up....
Crafting requires a lot of time to level up you can always pay to get it faster....
All tier 5 ships are useless now, you need to buy upgrade for them. Event and lock box ship can be upgraded for free.

If you have lots of free time, you can actually play this pretty much free and you can get everything in the game buy using the Dilithium to Zen Exchange so you will have only wasted time. Overall it is a nice F2P system in that regard since nothing is behind a real money paywall only, since all items can be bought if you spend a time playing. The current event is a good example as you can net around 300+/- Zen (depending on the exchange rate) for each character you run through with it so if you have multiple characters, you could easily make enough to buy a ship from this event alone.

you should never expect to become "top high end" in a f2p mmo anyway, without paying at least something (and that's not necessarily a bad thing).

This game is a prime example of "pay2skip" model. The problem is that it's a huge timesink if you want to farm zen-coins effectively.
Thankfully, there is absolutely NOTHING in their marketplace that is essential to the enjoyment of the game. You can breeze through the stories, buy all the ships to be competitive, and just plain have a good time without paying a single dime.

Personally I find STO's F2P model one of the best. The Zen market is mostly there just for those who want stuff to go faster or want specific outfits or ships. These ships are not better than others but are usually rooted in Trekky history.
Dilithium is actually pretty easy to get hold of if you do quests - I got about 60.000 Dil without doing all that much and that's plenty to buy all kinds of stuff with.
Yes, stuff takes time but do you seriously want an MMO where it takes a week or two to max out everything?

I was so pissed of when i reached level 50 and found out that i had to pay or farm for a few years for a top tier ship. Fucking bullshit. Got a new ship every 10 levels or so and when i reached 50 i had to pay. Dropped it then and there.

Those bastards!
How long does it take to reach 50? I'm about to hit lvl 10 with 10 hours of playtime within two days and it's been a bit overwhelming so far, but still kind of fun, although I know I'm going to hit the wall once I get familiar with the gameplay, mission structure and the whole big picture itself. I see it can get quite repetitive...

Thanks, but I've clicked every button in that Tailor menu including the Uniform menu upper right corner, picking Jacket Tight and still no visuals for armors. It seems like I need to be at certain level or something. I clearly remember seeing them and this eye icon for showing/hiding armors when I was playing the beta years ago, but it was mentioned in the chat that there were changes and beginner armors don't even have visuals anymore. Maybe something unlocks at lvl 10, but I doubt it. Not a game breaking deal or anything, but still, it can't be that complicated. And it would be nice to see what armors actually look like. Funny how everything else about the game is kind of self-explanatory except this seemingly little thing...

It definitely gets repetitive but there's an underlying complexity to it all that might surprise you. To fully understand how to get the most out of a given ship you really have to know things inside and out. Allow me to give an example of one potential loadout for just one of my ships:
http://skillplanner.stoacademy.com/?build=ifea_9401
This is just looking at bridge officer (boff) skill selection, not active duty officers (doff), gear, traits (of which you get 10 universal, 4 space, 4 starship, and 4 active!), class abilities, devices, etc.
With Attack Patterns Omega and Beta, plus other choices in my build, I have APs running 24-7; this allows me to benefit from +AP on a doff and bonuses from some gear and Pilot specialization. That same doff brings down my Tactical Team ability to "horizontal" cooldown with my build, you want TT running 24-7 too. I can also keep Emergency Power to Subsystem (EPtX) abilities going 24-7 for potential power bonuses. Hazard Emitters lets me recoup from my plasma torpedoes, Transfer Shield Strength heals shields + resistance in-between EPtS. Surgical Strikes runs 24-7 with 3 and 1. To boost that damage to crazy heights I cycle Override System Safeties with them, and I use Engineering Team I near the end of each to prevent subsystem loss. Torpedo High Yield I mixes well with my hyper-plasma launcher, and I have a doff that gives me +fire on torpedo usage (hyper-plasma counts as 3 firings per, not one, so it procs 60% every 6 seconds).
I have these abilities aligned in two actions bars (hotbar) mapped to mouse buttons 4/5 in addition to my ship and class abilities; both are full. So I basically have 20 abilities constantly cycling with two buttons outside of what I'm doing with the ship and other skills. Simply having that won't do anything for you, though...you need to have the right Boffs (romulan SRO, human leadership, saurian efficiencies), the right doffs (lots of unique ones), and the right gear to match your traits (for ex., high aux helps with Nukara's aux -> weapon power trait), not to mention the right set bonuses.
The difference between someone who just throws gear on a ship with abilities they like and someone with organized cycling is between 10:1 and 50:1 in raid efficiency/DPS. I'm still perfecting my 3 main ships (one of each type) and I've been testing/working on them for 2 months straight...and I still have a ways to go.
P.S. I use Surgical Strikes instead of Beam/Cannon abilities because SS enables you to use both cannons/turrets and beams on the same ability, which gives flexibility on gear.

The cheapest ships you can get at 50 are the APU Cruiser and Kazon Heavy Raider...they are consolation prize lockbox ships that go cheap on the exchange. You do have to pay to upgrade them to T5U - this costs either real cash ($7.50 I believe, sometimes on sale for $6) or 7-8 million EC (which isn't a bad deal). Overall they can be had and upgraded for 8 mil - about 75,000 dilithium. That's 8-9 days of farming if you use just one character...if just farming dilithium. In reality with drops it would be much quicker.
A good fleet will give you access to more ships, though. Almost all of them require a similar token as well as fleet credits, probably more in the 20 mil+ range if you pay it out.
That sounds like a lot of money but for example during the 2-month Omega Particle event, you could make about 6 mil/hr just playing a minigame, sooo...

About leveling: it's very fast. I do about a level and a half a day and I'm level 56 now - they really sped up leveling so more people would reach the end content.

Delta Recruitment starts with today's patch, it's a good time to start playing if you haven't checked the game out yet. Many perks and bonuses for people already playing, too. Going to make a Reman who aligns with the KDF...
If anybody needs a good fleet or just some help, drop me a PM with your handle and I'll get back to you.

I only end up playing this now when they have the free ship events so it is fun a few times a year but the game engine for ground battles is showing its age. The space battles though are still pretty nice as they have been updating the ship visuals.
Many quit the game when the tier 6 ships were introduced as it basically made all your paid tier 5 ships useless so most did not want to have to rebuy all their favorite ships again in tier 6 form. They also started adding too many of the sought after fan favorite ships to the lock boxes so unless you played a lot and really play the market in game you probably cannot afford to get them via credits.

Yep, pretty much why I quit too. I refuse to be involved in insane paywall tactics. Annoys me. And yes, the ground battles are terrible now - the new DS9 looks as good as it can, but let's face it, the graphics there look 15 years old.
