|
 |
Quote: | Valve announced the Source 2 engine, the successor to the Source engine used in Valve's games since the launch of Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2. "The value of a platform like the PC is how much it increases the productivity of those who use the platform. With Source 2, our focus is increasing creator productivity. Given how important user generated content is becoming, Source 2 is designed not for just the professional developer, but enabling gamers themselves to participate in the creation and development of their favorite games," said Valve's Jay Stelly. "We will be making Source 2 available for free to content developers. This combined with recent announcements by Epic and Unity will help continue the PCs dominance as the premiere content authoring platform."
Also as part of supporting PC gaming, Valve announced that it will be releasing a Vulkan-compatible version of the Source 2 engine. Vulkan is a cross-platform, cross-vendor 3D graphics API that allows game developers to get the most out of the latest graphics hardware, and ensures hardware developers that there is a consistent, low overhead method of taking advantage of products. Vulkan, previously called Next Generation OpenGL, is administered by the Khronos Group, along with other standards such as OpenCL, OpenGL, and WebGL. |
The included shout out to Unity and Unreal means they are not antagonizing them. They don't care how you make PC games - with their engine or not - as long as you sell them on Steam.
Hopefully we will see/read something more about the engine before the end of GDC.

Good move by Valve. Source was a great engine, let's hope Source 2 is just as big a step in engine development.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Valve needs to stop with the hardware and focus on the software.

Oh, goody. Source 2 and CryEngine can duke it out for who gets to take the distant third place in the engine race, I suppose.
And since it's Valve, I can only deduce that the main point of this is really just to make it even easier for people to add monetized community content crap to TF2 and Dota 2, or else they wouldn't even bother.
Wait a minute...Valve trying to take the third-place spot for game engines...Half-Life 3 confirmed. ...As if!
Correcting people since 2007 even if they're not wrong.

I much preferred games created with the source engine compared to UE, don't really know why, the games just felt better. I'm hoping s2 will be the same

As long as we do not get a list of features, I guess this news is only meant to hype?

It's really just one of the many (like 7 or so..) announcements they made. I pasted the full press release here: http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2673903#2673903
For now I don't expect them to make many details available. But I wonder if the engine was (is being) built with VR in mind...

Are programmers disqualified? |
I would think the opposite that they include everyone, all sorts of "creators", from programmers to artists to whatever. But until they clarify I put it in the title as is.

Mm, good for them. Hope its better than the source engine since I never liked the feel of the games/mods built on it.

Oh stop being an idiot RGB, me not liking the feel doesn't have to mean I like floaty movements.
Only reason why I see the need for you to respond like that is if you are somehow personally insulted... which is quite silly.

i didn't take it personally, why would i, but you are in for disappointment when soruce2 comes out because they'll try to mimic movement and weapon feel as close to source1 as possible. that's why so many people love source games and why they are among top played online games.

Then maybe stop the whole 'superiority act' if you are not.
I will not be disappointed when that feel will be the same. After all it's just me and plenty of people enjoy it/are satisfied with it.
It's not like I won't play the games since I enjoyed a few of them, but I always had a nagging feeling of the outdated movement/world when I played a game (not the gun play, it's one of the things I like better than what others produce).
The movement always felt like a cube sliding over a flat surface to me (sorry can't put it accurately in words), and the world felt restrictive in interaction and grandness. Also the modding bits felt outdated.
Needless to say, I also recognize that its from 2004. And the majority of games I played on it have been Around 2010 (never liked HL and CS series much and I discovered Portal and L4D a bit later than everyone else).

See and there you go again... console background. Seriously stop assuming
it's what I mean with the whole superiority feeling: the console/next gen mentions.
I don't mind that I have a minority view on the source engine, I don't even care people are baffled by it. For me back when HL2 came out the first thought I had was: urgh, that's a step back.
Btw here's my history: at 6 years old (which would have been 1988) I owned a PC and my gaming has ever since been preferred on a PC. Ofcourse I owned various consoles (like many children from the 70's/80's) up to the Sega Dreamcast and later on I even bought a PS3 that I haven't used all that much. Tho that still wouldn't make me the console player you think I am.

The reason I liked source games (the ones I actually liked, definitely not all) is that they looked decent and clean and, more importantly, didn't run like shit on my always outdated hardware.
I don't care what engine the game runs on though if the game is fun. I would never like a game just because it used a certain engine. If it's done right, the engine doesn't define the game. It's just a tool.
