It's a remaster, an updated re-release, not a remake. I don't see how it's a huge fucking joke since it sounds like it's doing exactly what it should be doing.

That's a problem of the original game itself. It's a 2D game meaning it will be forever and ever limited to the aspect ratio it was designed for.

It needs the art to be remade to make it widescreen compatible. Remade art = remake. Or make it realtime 3D which = again, a remake. Which this isn't.

backrounds arent remade as far as i could see it. no real 16:9 support (cause they used the old 4:3 pictures), its only stretched if set to it. only improved thing gfxwise are the 3d models of the chars, look like a higher resolution, improved lightning and some aa. the only real difference to the original is the mouse support, the game wasnt a point and click. you had to use the keyboard to move etc, kinda tank like controls like in resident evil.

the game itself was is and will be always awesome. if you never played it or dont own it get the remastered version but play in 4:3, the stretched backrounds look awefull. you can switch between old gfx & controls to new gfx and mouse control anytime you want

It's 15 euros. I think 10 euros would be a fair price if it was a straight up re-release of the original, eg like System Shock 2 (which just comes preinstalled with the fan patch).

Add modern system compatibility, a re-recorded score, new point and click controls and gamepad compatibility, some midlly updated graphics and developer commentary and the price gets a bump to 15.

Widescreen can't be modded in. It's a 2D game. It's like asking if the Mona Lisa is coming in widescreen as well. It's impossible.

they have done it with monkey island 1+2 and will do it with day of the tentacle which are sold for almost the same price (ok now some time after release cheaper) so i dont understand why they havent given this game the love it deserves

The remade art of the Special Edition of MI is quite "simplistic".

Compare that with Grim Fandango's backgrounds which while saved as 2D images have been made with 3D elements and have a sense of depth, 3D lighting and so on.

In fact the SE of MI1 got some flack for its art for being cheaply done and not capturing the feeling of the original. Imagine having to redo Grim Fandango's more complex art.

Also the SE of MI sort of reused the animations of the original game meaning the characters in the SE have some really really really bad movement. So that game wasn't exactly a remake either. But nor did it claim to be.

I haven't played MI2 SE. Razz

special edition of the second one was better as the first one

and yes ofc grim fandango had some "other" style and due to that the backrounds arent really comparable to the monkey island ones BUT its still a 2d backround and nothing more. just not be more complicated to remade them in proper way, they were just lazy assholes for not doing it (they have redone the lighning for example to that should not have been a problem at all)

Well, it's not quite "still a 2d backround and nothing more". It's exported from a 3D modeling program.

So to properly remake the backgrounds they would need to recreate the 3D scenes.

Which isn't impossible, just be prepared to also pay the money required for it.

Though I do think they did a decent enough job (I'm happy to have the game running on a modern machine with a point and click interface) If they had have gone that route I would have no problem paying the extra money. Then again Double Fine have so much on they probably couldn't devote the time to it anyway.

The thing is that they had original assets. Without them they couldn't implement better lightning system. And as they were doing that they could up the resolution and quality of backgrounds and even implement a proper wide screen. Although, I really don't like the idea of forcing wide screen into a game that was made for 4:3, doing absolutely nothing to the backgrounds reeks of laziness on part of the developer. Beamdog had nothing from BG1 and they at least threw the art through upscaler and we got a fair improvement.

Here we got shadows, fifty polygons per character and fixed conveyor belt bug. Yea, I'm not paying for that mr. Schafer...

Just played the remaster a bit, I think it's okay. Razz Nothing too amazing, but it does its job fine as definitive release, which is the most important thing.

The original backgrounds are still more than decent in my opinion, the fantastic style makes them basically timeless even if you can spot some pixels and there's forced 4:3 (with fancy borders). Same for the characters. I must say that I approve the idea of leaving them intact, and only improve the definition + add self-shadowing, a re-design might have done more harm than good.

Voices are the same quality as the original game (and it's..a bit too noticeable at times, sadly, but it was inevitable), the soundtrack on the other hand is much better, crystal clear now.
As for the controls, well mouse controls work really well. I'm not sure I like 'em more than the tank-y keyboard, but they're very responsive.

A few screenies (1080p) to give an idea:

edit: all the languages are included also, I had to try the Italian one again at some point for the nostalgia factor Very Happy ( Grim Fandango is probably my favourite adventure game of all times^^)

I don't see how the better realtime lighting proves they have the assets for the prerendered backgrounds. These two should be unrelated I think.

You can play the game 'widescreen', meaning they stretch the image (doesn't look so much worse).

Game really didn't grab me yet. It has good voice acting, that's most certainly true, but voice acting alone isn't enough. Humor was sometimes funny, but most of the time it really wasn't. I just reached that forest place after joining the resistance army or whatever they were called. Is this too soon to pass my judgement?

Year II, imo, is the best the game has to offer. if you don't enjoy that part, it's not for you.
