Looks pretty cool but remains to be seen how precise it is and what resolution that screen is.

I've talked with a friend just a few days ago about strapping a kinect-like camera on top of oculus rift to offer a "holodeck" like experience. Probably not for use at home but at specialized venues you could have a big room with just bland boxes representing obstacles, and then use something like this to overlay a virtual world on top of it.

Even if this ends up being not so good, it's a step in the right direction and I'm glad someone has thought of it.

Haha!

In all seriousness, like I said in the MS thread in PC section; this HoloLens is the only thing that has actually wowed me so far. I love the idea, love the scope, love the potential and if MS can really pull off their vision like this then I'd love to be part of it. Sadly I doubt it's even a fifth as effective or impressive as their all-CGI, all-fake, presentation makes it look.

Whilst simplistic, the HoloLens live demonstration was extremely impressive to me. Looking forward to seeing how the technology is utilized in the future.

If you didn't get the chance to view it.

the promo videos are bullshit
it doesn't deal with opacity in any way
things will look super messy if there's anything behind the object in the real world
still, interesting tech
especially the outward facing head tracking is really impressive
something oculus is also working on

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/01/22/minecraft-hololens-minecraft-reality/

How is even technology like that possible ? We've never seen any augumented reality even CLOSE to that.

it sounds like something straight from the onion. It should be in dictionaries as an example for hypocrisy.

Again with natal and milo... Are companies even allowed to lie like that ?

All heil Derpyneux! xD

Somehow this reveal slipped under my radar a couple of days ago. As far as I can tell, the idea behind it is surprisingly interesting (for Microsoft's standards, that is). I don't own nor I plan to own any vr devices (for now), but I like to witness the various progresses and experimentations with new tech. If anything, more competition is always a good thing when it comes to such growing baby market Razz

edit: Alex Kipman's pic in the article doesn't promise anything great though Sad Laughing

indepth hands-on from Oliver Kreylos, who is known for his critical reviews
http://doc-ok.org/?p=1223
looks like it's what we expected
the promo videos are bullshit
screen is additive only (useless in a lit room)
it's a ridiculous 30° by 17.5° fov
near clipping plane is set at 60cm so you can't see anything up close (probably to avoid showing tracking jitter)
but it does make a 3d mesh of the room and the 6dof tracking does work
if they add a proper screen (it's just a dlp projector) with a wider fov it could be something
as is? not so much
half the promos couldn't be done with this thing
