We are excited to announce our new title “Hob”, an original IP for PC and console.
Hob is set on a beautiful and dangerous unknown world, with buzzing life above and the whirrs of mysterious machinery below. The more players delve into the world’s design, the more they uncover a planet in peril. Players must learn to survive, understand their true purpose through acquiring skills, and ultimately transform the nature of the world itself.
Hob is presented without text or dialogue. Narrative is revealed as players explore and interact with their mysterious planet, and the strange life forms that inhabit it. Hob features smooth controller gameplay, multi-layered puzzles, and striking visuals
The official Hob website, hobgame.com, is live today with screenshots, concept art, and the first teaser trailer. Gaming news outlet Polygon has the exclusive first interview with President Marsh Lefler, CEO Max Schaefer, Level Designers Patrick Blank and Rick Lesley, and Concept Artist Kyle Cornelius.
Meh. After TL2, I will believe it when I see it.
Game was just so mediocre compared to TL1.
Speak for yourself. Some of us actually enjoyed the sequel far more than its predecessor and are still playing it today. It certainly washed the bad taste out that Diablo 3 left over.
I am not expecting much given the fact that Perfect World owns them now. I wouldn't be surprised if they turned it into an MMO like they originally intended to. Also, a few of the developers have left Runic to form a new studio. So, i am not expecting much from them at all. Luckily Torchlight 2 has some great mod support thus ensuring its longevity for years to come.
problem is how can they compete with path of exile except their charming kiddy gfx, they really need a shitton of improvements in the arpg and have nobody to look at, d3 was a bust, so dont see how they can come up with new features but just more of the same

That is not very difficult at all.
Path of Exile is after all, VERY trade/"craft" centric when you reach later levels. Which is why I don't like to play it at all, I want to get my gear through actual gameplay, not microing prices for various items and then spamming trade chat or using 3rd party sites. Yes, PoE is somewhat possible to play solo in end game but it's vastly superior in parties and you still need to trade unless you're masochistic.
For as much as Diablo III fails in a lot of aspects, at least it gives you the proper choice of farming for gear at end game. Of course there are problems with their implementation and other stuff but yeah.
So it's not very difficult at all to "compete" with PoE. They simply don't compete, they don't do the whole 'trade to get stronger' shit and actually just give us gameplay. That's what made TL1 and 2 sell so well, that and the mod support through Steam Workshop (in the case of TL2). TL2 is almost perfect for me, the only thing I kind of wished it had is the online service of PoE/Diablo III (and of course have it be OPTIONAL) with no gameplay changes.
And that's aside from the fact that the combat in PoE feels like shit. Or at least it used to before release and for a few months after, at which point I gave up on it. Its combat system is that of an MMORPG, where what you see on screen isn't necessarily what really happened. Whether you hit your target or not couldn't even be distinguished visual or auditory. Never mind the skill tree that was just big for the sake of being big, it seems incredibly amazing at first, until you realise how 90% of it is bullshit.
While i did enjoy TL1 & 2 and can forgive a lot of shortcomings to budget, but i did feel the itemization and skill systems to me seeming a bit weak. TL2 was definitely better than D3 but it wasn't the kind of game i kept coming back to wanting to play.
I've been spoiled by Median XL though, i don't see how any ARPG can match what brother laz did over the ten of so years of constant development perfecting that mod.
^ I definitely agree with that. The combat has gotten a little better but it's still fairly lackluster when compared to other ARPGs. And the overly large skill tree is still overly large indeed. It does offer some amount of customization and interesting combinations but honestly, it doesn't really have to be that large for that to still be true.
As for desync stuff, from what I've read on their forums, desync has been reduced but is still fairly normal apparently, to the dismay of hardcore characters.
Yeah I didn't think it was ever gonna change, they seemed pleased with it.
Style aside (which is a matter of taste), TL2 in comparison got everything right for an ARPG. When you hit something, you hit it. When you click to do something, it responds straight away. And when something happens, you see it and hear it. Van Helsing is very good too though, I consider both much better games than PoE. Grim Dawn is great too (but I'm refraining from playing it until it's properly done).
D3 is an odd duck, because they got the feel of the combat right, but completely fucked up everything else. The loot system was retarded, the balance was nowhere to be found - and that's aside from the usual Blizzard launch retardation.
I honestly don't care what state it is in now. I gave up on it 4 months after release, which should've been enough time for one of the biggest developers in the world with a budget bigger than anyone else's and a decade's worth of experience in running the single most successful MMO, as well as the most successful RTS games to get their fucking shit together.
But no, it took them a year and half. Because you know, they already got their money.
That's the other thing with all the other ones, PoE included: they fix their shit if they break it. And they all listen to their respective communities, Runic especially.
I've got to admit, POE looked great as an idea... but then you start it and you experience the flaws Werelds and others talk about it.
Certainly not a bad game, but it just doesn't grab my attention like some of the other games in the genre. The huge skill list always felt more like a gimmick to me, but the worst about it is how it is designed. It could have been less tedious. Kinda reminds me off the Civ:BE one... pretty but fricking annoying to navigate especially once the novelty wears off.
I started the adventures of van helsing on the weekend.
I really wish the Torchlight devs would make a "more adult themed" game just like van helsing and less comical/kiddie-like settings/theme.
The first thing I noticed when playing Van Helsing however was the lack of any hit-feedback whatsoever.
I believe Torchlight got the hit feedback and critical feedback right. Aswell as the much praised loot-system.
That is the reason why I'm looking at Grim Dawn with one eye (the other eye hates EA games).
Gimme Torchlight in Dark, Dark, Dark setting a la Dark Souls or Diablo 1+2 and we're good.
Progress on Grim Dawn is slow but steady, first part of the third act came out a while ago and it's pretty good now if you liked Titan Quest though they have traded the mythological fantasy setting for something a bit more post-apocalyptic.
Van Helsing and Grim Dawn are two of my absolute favourite "recent" aRPGs. They both tick all the right boxes for me, though I am getting fed up with the massively extended devtime on GD They only just put out part of Act 3, with the rest to come "maybe" Q4-2015 .. and then they announce that there might be an Act 4 too. It's a great game but they need to hire more staff or stop taking 5 day weekends. Seriously.
