Beamdog has a new blog post with information about working on a new game set between Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2

This year, the eagerly anticipated Adventure Y will finally navigate the dark underground caverns of development and venture out into the Sword Coast. We’ve mentioned before that Adventure Y will be an addition to the Baldur’s Gate line using the Infinity engine, bridging the gap between Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition

Oh... Sad

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

What is there to bridge?

Sarevok dies and the player party decides to travel to wherever and then they get ambushed during the night while resting, somehow losing to some low-level mobs because of story reasons. Razz
(Well the level cap was raised for BG2 so the party was probably a bit underpowered in comparison as I doubt the XP cap removal mod can be considered canon. )

Bioware already bridged that gap in the 30s intro to BG2. Not sure how Beamdog are going to stretch that out to a full game.

Thing is, I doubt it'll be a full game. They seem to be very wary of the words they use. "Adventure", "addition to the Baldur's Gate line" and so on. It would seem they're not very eager to simply call it a new Baldur's Gate game. I think it's gonna be a smallish project - sort of a longer, standalone DLC or expansion.

Even as a DLC, it seems like they are pushing it to milk the idea for anything of merit. I assume it will probably focus on the player's Bhaalspawn heritage being discovered and being "encouraged" to leave Baldur's Gate.

They were captured by Shadow Thieves, not exactly amateurs (though murdering the lot of them with Bohdi was quite easy Smile )

I think there was a small mod for TuTu or BGT that had you go to an area southmost of the map, camp there and get ambushed. The action moved straight to BG2 then. Hope this will be more developed.

Oh yeah, I think this BG1.5 will mainly be for some of the BG1 characters that died in between the time they got imprisoned. Plus I think they might be seeding a threat here for BG3. Who knows...

Oh right they were in that dungeon for a while before BG2 started, Imoen and I forgot what his canon name was (The player character.) having all sorts of fun experiences with Irenicus.
(Although Boo had the worst of it by far since Minsc had to hide him "somewhere" as far as I remember.)

That and the party members (And ex-party members.) portraits do look quite different between the two games.

Yea, I agree. They're definitely pushing it.

I'm skeptical for the obvious reasons, but also very much looking forward to it...for the obvious reasons. Very Happy

Chris Avellone gave 'em some tips about the writing, though it's still unclear whether he was just a mascot or he actively spurred the Beamdogs to write some decent story contents. Hope it's the latter!

Some info from the presentation:

- Starts two weeks after the defeat of Sarevok, Charname hailed as hero, but suspected of a shared lineage with Sarevok.

- During this time, a holy crusade is rising in the north, besieging dragonspear castle for supplies. They're led by a woman named Caelar, whose origin is shrouded in mystery but could possibly also be a bhaalspawn. The Grand Dukes of Baldur's Gate ask you to end this crusade on their behalf, and you go north leading an army of mercenaries.

- 70 new areas, 25 voice actors with several returning from BG1/2, hundreds of new items, spells and abilities.

- Over 25 hours of new story and a bunch of side content. "Riddled with crannies" according to Phil Daigle.

- New class, shaman. Able to summon "an almost unlimited number of ghostly allies", but is rooted in place while summoning - a shaman NPC will be available.

- Meant to be more accessible than previous games without sacrificing tactical depth: new interface, journal pop-ups that deliver concise journal information (longer entries with more lore are still available); combat health bars (optional); inventory highlighting that suggests which characters to give items to.

- New difficulty modes: story mode difficulty (easy combat); "legacy of bhaal" difficulty, similar to heart of fury, for veteran players.

- Combines open-world exploration of BG1, iconic locations from BG2, art and combat from IWD.

More BG is never a bad thing... even with ridiculous things like inventory highlighting suggesting which party member to give an item to.

A pretty interesting read: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/07/17/baldurs-gate-3/2/

Quote:
Half of the team now working for Beamdog are modders themselves, people who have known the ins and outs (and imperfections) of the Infinity Engine for many years and who initially took it upon themselves to make what they did out of their love for the games. Furthermore, Beamdog are hoping that, after Siege of Dragonspear is released, some players might try modding it themselves. Their plan is to make some of the development tools they’ve been using available for everyone else to tinker with.

Quote:
One of the things Oster and his team are happiest about now is being free and independent, not being compelled to hit a release date by an inflexible publisher nor, he adds, having to argue the value of a property with them. Their sales figures, he says, tell that story, and he’s clearly endured frustrations with pushy publishers in the past. While Oster hopes that Siege of Dragonspear will see release some time this year, he says there’s no need to rush and is adamant that “A game that ships on time and is not great is not remembered. A great game that ships late is still a great game.”

I'm more than fine with that Razz
