i just use a media server on my pc like tversity, serviio or plex, and stream it over to my sony bravia tv, if something isnt supported by the tv itself, it gets transcoded on the fly.
sure its not as a great as a dedicated htpc, but it comes pretty close with current software, offers true 24p playback too.
so intel finally caught up with something that rockchip had for years now
Only difference is that this will actually run shit properly instead of lagging like a bitch with everything you do. And the WiFi will probably not require the access point to be within 1m of the damn thing to get speeds over 2 Mbps either.
leosmetan i compared tv box to tv box after all that's what you gonna use it for
media streaming blbrlblrbrlblbr
so yeah you can shove that price or just mount it behind your tv
it's ok if you have nothing to say, but saying that you have nothing to say makes you
Ok then, just for you, here goes.

well that was with models from 2012, newer has much stronger cpu/gpu and better wifi than most mobile flagships, support 4k and all that shit
True, newer models are faster. But hardware isn't all. All of these boxes ship with either a full version of Android, which is crap to use on a TV (Google didn't just create Android TV for no reason) and most of them ship with crap drivers which causes them to lag. Flash performance is also appalling in most of these, which means that the whole thing comes to a halt when it starts writing data (I tried out an MK902 II box a few months ago, so I know how crap it gets). Then there's the other ones, that ship with an embedded Linux variant that looks and runs like crap.
The MK902 II box I tried also had an external antenna like the one you linked and it still struggled with WiFi. Where my phone (N4) and laptop (MBP) quite easily hit 50-60 Mbps and ~90 Mbps respectively, my iPad 3 and that box struggled to hit 20 Mbps. My Chromecast now gets better WiFi performance than that box did - and that's without any antenna. And I'm pretty sure that's down to the crap software on those boxes.

oh and they cost ridiculously less than overpriced intel
You linked to a $210 box for your example. You can get a Celeron NUC or Gigabyte Brix ($130 - $145), the WiFi module ($30), RAM ($30) and an mSATA SSD ($30 for 30 GB, we're not looking at quality since it's still faster than the flash in these boxes) for a grand total of $235-ish just the same. So no, they don't. And then you still get x86.

btw intel and rockchip made their chip together not so long ago and it costed peanuts
No they haven't. Intel and RC entered a partnership where Intel is branding some of RC's SoCs for some ultramobile products, but the joint chip isn't out until H2'15. And that'll be Atom+3G from Intel, rest from RC.

this NUC is purely for people who like to pay more for less or same- iaw apple people
Or people who want a tiny desktop. Or people who want an HTPC that works better than the crap above. Android TV works great, but none of these boxes ship with that nor will they ever do so. And beyond that, running MediaPortal, Plex or XBMC on an x86 platform delivers a far superior media playing experience. Trust me, I know.
A Raspberry Pi is a better choice than these boxes. It's less powerful, but things like RaspBMC or OpenELEC are much better than the half-assed implementations on those boxes.
Get one of those boxes before you open your mouth. I've tried an 802 II box, 802 III stick and 902 II box and none of them are worth the money. If you're talking pure media playback, my $/€45 Raspberry Pi setup or my $/€35 Chromecast are far better choices than these Android boxes, at least until one of them ships with XBMC or Android TV.
sab you are too late for the party and you were not invited
besides i compared price per usability not specs but yeah sure laugh it up
i sure as hell wouldn't pay 400 euro for something that 60 euro stick could do, then again i'm not filthy rich like leopoldo
the bearded lady said media playback, so i joined, but he has too much moneyz to spend, probably due to absent of any kind of companion in his life

You've got issues dude.

something for you werelds
Congratulations, you just showed how Rockchip licensed Intel's modem. Bravo. But it's still not the joint chip (Intel had no had in manufacturing this) and that's still ARM and thus not comparable to x86 (and yes, it does make a difference).
Just snagged this 250kr and 150kr shipping (works out at around £34 since the pound is strong right now) - bargain! This will do nicely to replace the crappy "SmartTV" functionality on our TV, much better media capabilities and Hola unblocker for US Netflix as well as bringing a fantastic emulator suite so we can sync my spare PS3 controller

I got my MK908ii and it's awesome. XBMC works fine over the network, wifi speed is about 18Mbps so it's more than enough for non-BD50 content and it handles local videos perfectly too. Antutu gives 22160, faster than the Galaxy S4 and the Note 2, so it should be just fine for emulation PS3 controller synced up just nicely even via the standard full-size USB port, didn't have to use OTG at all, and DraStic emulator runs 100% speed - since NDS runs perfectly I have no reason to believe RetroArch and its many cores won't run great also, though I'm super-eager to check out how Reicast performs*
The difference between the piece of crap "SmartTV" functionality and this is night and day, as XBMC performance is great and has no lag or slowdown, it even lets me browse our two PCs on the network without having to just stream via DLNA, which is very handy. Though I spent all friggin' night trying out various different ROMs, most are crap or buggy as hell (Android ) and the stock, while nice, is very basic and has a hell of a time installing Play Store apps (seems to just hang on "Installing...") - I eventually settled on a 4.4.2 custom ROM which is lightning quick and very smooth, the only downside is that it has no 1080p support - the modder made it 720p There are other ROMs based off 4.4.2 that have 1080p but they cause the screen to flicker or turn on/off. Oh well. Also, I had to use my missus' Win7 laptop to flash the stick since the bootloader and flashing tools are incompatible with Windows 8.1 because of course they are, I did try to install the Windows 8 drivers but no go.. and I think they may have corrupted the USB stack since I've gotten two BSODs since then. FML
Anyway, question for anyone else using Android sticks/boxes; do you leave them running? This thing has no power buttons so if I use the launcher/app to shutdown then it can't be turned back on without disconnecting from USB, even the Rii i8 keyboard doesn't turn it back on. So should I just leave it running? After all, our phones are on 24/7 no? Thanks!
~edit~
*Oh well, that wasn't too fantastic. Performance was okay but it had a lot of visual errors and the jittering/stuttering felt almost like frameskip was forced despite being disabled. Rival Schools 2 and Zombie Revenge are "full speed" aside from the aforementioned jittering. I think the emulator needs a lot more work though
Dunno if it will work with yours, but I shoved Finless rom 2.1 on mine (rooted), and then XBMC Ultimate (only coz I can't be assed installing all the add-ons, and it comes as a complete package).
Dunno about yours?, but I power mine from TV USB to box, doing away with the power supply that came with it. This way, when I turn off TV, box goes off, and vice versa
Your Rii should be able to put the box in standby and wake though, so that is strange?
I didn't know there was a Finless 2.1 compatible with RK3188? :\ I'm also using an older version of XBMC since KODI (the new name) seems a little stranger with HD movies, not sure if it was just me though. I don't need loads of addons though, I'm quite fine keeping it as barebones as possible, I don't even enable scraping or library functions.. I prefer explorer with filenames. As for powering from TV, that's actually a very good idea - the only reason I hadn't done it was because a lot of people on Freaktab reckon the power plug gives it the most stable power.
I guess I'll try that sometime.
And no, doesn't seem to be any standby function. The Ri has a power button but pressing it while the box is on just restarts the device and when the box is powered off none of the buttons do anything.
There's a Finless 2.0 but it, like the veclinux one I have now, is 720p also. Finless' old method for giving a true 1080p kernel doesn't work on KK apparently. Bah.. honestly, if anyone knows the absolute recommended ROM for the MK908ii (RK3188 with AP6210 wifi), preferably with KK and 1080p, I'd be most obliged Trying to navigate all the available ROMs out there is a damned nightmare.

Nope Once the box is shut down (as in, pressing the shutdown option on the home screen) the light goes off and it no longer accepts inputs from the Rii. What makes dealing with ROMs so annoying is that none of the authors actually bother updating the first post in their threads, instead you have to look through 30+ pages of each thread and you find devs posting random snippets of firmware.. like mixing Finless 2.0 with D33 kernels .. only, you have to FIND where he posted them first.
Yeah, its like that with my router stuff as well, posts on forum everywhere, nothing stickied, and what is, is 2 years out of date. Dammed irritating lol.
Well that's the downside to a lot of these Chinese Android sticks, they come with crap software as I said
On the note of NUCs, I'm actually gonna build one for a friend of my dad's this weekend. His PC died after (it lasted 8 years, to give you an idea of how much of a powerhouse he needs ) so I looked around a bit and a NUC is actually priced pretty damn well. Gonna be rolling with 8 gigs of RAM and a 250 GB SSD and the whole set still only comes out to just under 400 Euros. Really looking forward to assembling that little box
