My friend's mother wants to buy my dell u2311h monitor so I thought Id take that chance and buy a new bigger one. Im really pleased with my current one, but I'd like a a bit bigger screen. The problem is that my monitor is at hand length from me. The bigger screen comes to use tho when I watch movies from my bed. It should be at least 24", but maybe bigger is even better. Should I go with 1440p at these sizes? not sure my card can handle games maxed on 1440p for the foreseeable future. I'd like some suggestions then My budget is around 200-300 euros, but im willing to spend more if there is something with great value a bit over the price point. I'm using it for gaming, movies, school work, surfing. It is also important that I could turn the screen to the side. Reading comics is fucking awesome that way
You can use this to see what is available to me at what price. It has all the prices in estonia.

At a glance, the Dell P2714H seems to be a perfect fit.
At 27" 1440p is usually recommended for best image clarity, but if you are worried about performance (and then there are budget considerations) this one will do better at 1080p. How badly you will be affected by lower pixel density is a subjective matter. Would be nice if you could compare display and see for yourself if that is something that will bother you.

Im kinda scared that 27" with 1080p will be a bit too blurry. what about dell u2414h?

oh dear, more nonsense about 27" 1080p. it's just the screen size that is larger, you still run 1080p content on a 1080p native res, so it's not "blurry", it can't be. if you think that 27" 1080p is like using non-native res on a 23" 1080p well it's not that.
anyway, personally been using 27" 1080p for years at home and don't see a reason to upgrade, i prefer my games smoother and i think 1080p is perfect for gaming at least until single affordable GPU can run games in 4K properly.
i actually use every day 27" 1440p at work and 27" 1080p at home so i know first hand how they look and feel.
oh and most important nonsense people will try to feed you is that you can see individual pixels on a 27" 1080p, well, you can't, unless you put your face in a screen, but you can also see pixels on 1440p screen doing this so...
in the end it's all up to you, just make sure you buy IPS

I really like IPS so ill stick with that. Guess Ill just have to go and look 27" 1080p monitors firsthand at some shop if it's possible.

go with 1440p 27" Its better for gaming.
As for framerates it depends if you need 60fps all the time.

27MB85R-B, then Q2770PQU, maybe EV2736W, then BL2710PT and forget the others..
the LG has only 6ms input lag and thus is the best for fast games
there are countless posts about this on hardforum, this is the consensus
if you get lucky there are very few Q2770PQU and EV2736W batches with A-TW polarizer and thus no IPS glow. best order somewhere where it is easy to get it replaced in case there is blb or too much glow

how about 27MB85R-B vs QX2710 Evolution II? I'd need a new mount for it, but it's a minor concern.

I wonder about va displays. They suppose to have great blacks and contrast compared to ips.
And to say the truth... I love my ips u2312hm but blacks and backlight glow are bad.
Tell me something about va. 24 24 or 27. Prolly 1080p for performance reasons.
Why vs isnt more popular than ips

because
a) VA panels in monitors sucked until recently, it took until 2013/2014 when they finally improved viewing angles, color gamut and response times
b) they all suffer from gamma shift, this causes dark halftones to quickly brighten when viewed off-center and is problematic for color critical work
But in most higher end LCD Televisions VA-type panels have already replaced IPS, and generally get better reviews on sites.

Another drawback to VAs is that they are much more prone to ghosting or trailing (you literally get "streaks" following a moving object). Even the fast-response ones still have some traces of it if you look closely enough. IPS panels handle it better even with comparable response times.
As for HDTVs... with around 5 different ones I had through about 7-8 years, they were all VA-based. So it's not really a new thing for TVs, nor is it limited to higher end models. Response times were generally considered not that big of a deal with TVs and bright whites, deep blacks and vivid colors are easy to sell to the consumers.
It depends on the manufacturer though - I think LG always favored IPS.

so va is out of the question ?
So how does my u2312hm ips fare agains other ips monitors? Maybe it would look nicer without anit glare coating

the 16:9 1080p ips monitors are not much better now, 6bit+FRC, lower color gamut (~90%) and the usual glowing and high incidence of backlight bleed
if you want an upgrade and stay with ips then get one of the semi-glossy/light matte 27'' 1440p local or korean, or maybe a 29'' 21:9.
glossy only if you dont mind reflections..even in a dark room youre gonna see your face on a black screen

Honestly, for gaming VAs are the only ones I really want. If you go between the two, IPS starts to look incredibly "bleak". I am really happy with my FG2421 right now, even if it has a couple of minor issues. I hope we get to see them improving on the idea and going bigger in the future.
As for upgrading from 23-24" IPS, the only reasonable options I see right now (ignoring gaming performance issues):
1) Bigger (27" 1440p and higher)
2) Wider (21:9 displays)
3) 4K
4) 120Hz
Then there are all them Free/G-syncs to consider, once we start getting a proper selection of displays that support it.
Otherwise, switching one IPS for another with almost the same size is not worth it, in my opinion. Not yet anyway.

I am not really a resolution freak. 27 incher 1080p would be ok for me. dont need 2560x1440. I am also not a big fan of that 21:9 problematic weirdo.
I jsut want something with better blacks, no backlight or ips glow. Something to use in dark room and be able to enjoy content with dark scenes, from multiple angles. My U2312hm is actually pretty excellent when it comes to panel uniformity and viewing angles. It also have fantastic viewing angles. Just had to lower brightness to 20% to get black levels and ips glow to acceptable levels

i have experience with VA and i can confirm what MinderMast said about ghosting. VAs do have some bizzare ghosting with black/dark/grey/browish colors. i played RAGE with VA display and it looked absolutely disgusting, all that trailing and ghosting. experience was ruined. i got rid of it and switched to my old TN to finish the game. gladly all that is in the past and now i have my trusty IPS.
and regarding the whole 27" 1440p vs 1080p argument you have to ask yourself: do you prefer smoother FPS and running games in higher quality settings, or are you OK with FPS fluctuations and running games on lower quality settings than you would be able with 1080?

I would go VA. The contrast/gamma will slightly shift off center but you dont get the backlight bleed problems of the IPS panels or the corner glow or all of that BS that comes along with the good viewing angles.
Still, dont expect to be blown away by contrast ratio. It's nothing like OLED or even plasma tv. Whereas a good IPS will give you 1000:1, most VA panels on the market right now will do 2500:1.
Personally using a samsung 32" 1440p VA and it's pretty good. It is still not good enough to play in a dark room with lots of black content like my samsung plasma is.
