Yah even Yanfly though, as awesome as his work is, look at the extent of the scripts he needs to write to make that shit work, unbelievable. When RPG Maker should just fucking make that exist in their own program.
I've definitely used some horizontal battle system scripts before though, very impressive, I wish I was cool enough to make that stuff on my own. I just hate how "lazy" RPG maker feels when they keep skipping that particular feature. It seems like the most obvious thing they should add.

Are they really? I think I've heard someone commented how tiresome was to do all armors in Fallout 2 because they had to draw the character with all armors from all sides and then port it to the game while managing to keep the proportions and the look. Now its way easier since you just do the model once, its 3D model so you don't have to draw 99999 pictures that represent that armor or weapon for all sides.

they just had to make a screenshot of the 3d render from all directions and then use it as a sprite, they didnt have to redraw anything, thats what they do in jrpgs.

I'd add Three the Hard Way and A blurred line to the list posted by Sabin in the previous page. There are also lots of surprisingly great RM games made in foreign communities, such as:
Aedemphia (french) - probably the best RM game I've played and a very good RPG overall (no, really): aside from the stunning graphics, it's much more similar to a WRPG with choices and consequences (sometimes pretty surprising and with big effects on the gameworld), mutually exclusive factions to join, a skill system and almost all quests can be solved in multiple ways, often diplomatically. There's also a complex regional reputation system and you can gain "titles" depending on what you do (like Arcanum and Fallout).
Sternenkind Saga (german) - the full version came out some days ago. It features a very well done semi-historical setting, an extensive skill system (there are tons of skill checks in quests), a birthsign system which affects lots of things during the playthrough and later in the game you get to manage your own city.
Gromada (polish) - post-apocalyptic RPG (the setting is very reminiscent of Fallout) with a high degree of freedom. There's a "reputation" system (more like a karma system actually) and it affects which faction you can join later in the game, as well as how your character develops.
Perfect world (polish) - basically the RM version of Deus Ex. Very, very well done and with a great faction system (you can even be a double agent and betray the faction you're working for).
Espadon (russian) - free roaming RPG with lots of choices to be made and nonlinear quests. Very similar to the Gothic games, both in the mechanics and in the harshness of the gameworld.
Then there are lost of very interesting JAP games, though the best ones would probably be:
Ruina: Fairy Tale of the Forgotten Ruins - remember the good old gamebooks? This is the RM version, with a bit of Darklands throw in as well. It's such a pity that this game will never be properly translated, because I'm sure most WRPG fans would love it. It's also surprisingly complex and very replayable, with lots of small branches depending on the class you chose at the beginning and tons of hidden stuff.
Silfade Gensou - you've got 14 days to save a constantly evolving gameworld where cities get destroyed if you don't do anything. Very charming looks too, with a strong NES vibe.

Aedemphia topic. Supposedly coming (out?) in English. WANT.

I'm afraid the translation project was dropped long ago and I don't think Sylvanor plans to translate it alone (mostly because it'd take a massive amount of work due to the amount of content, not to mention that the game isn't finished yet).

As far as I know, none of the games I mentioned were ever translated. I played them by exporting the texts and making a google translation - as you can imagine, the quality was rather abysmal, but still (mostly) playable.
However, there are two foreign games that got a translation and are worth playing: the first one is the polish Tale of Exile (unfortunately, it suffered the same fate of ABL: four chapters planned, only the first one finished) and Vampire's Dawn (the second chapters is much better, but alas untranslated).

sure, it will most likely take a long time though, gonna have to spend a lot of time just learning the engine + creating artwork.

I've also been messing around with RPG Maker MV, fun stuff. Finally a proper built in side battle system.

From my understanding, you can also go up to 1920 x 1080 graphics with it now. I own it but haven't messed around much with it yet. |
This is one of the questions i asked on the forum, and a moderator (a dev?) replied you can go any screen size, the problem is that it will be the only screen size.. However it seems like there are plugins which can make you have several screen sizes, but that alone will break other plugins.
