btw, pro tip
it's worth enabling the mouse marker and then drag the sensitivities all the way down even if you use a joystick
cos then you get the mouse dot right in the middle of your screen which is always the ship forward direction, even if you use headlook to look around
it's really useful for aiming the head of your ship to exact points before hitting the thrusters

I just took this in the station I'm already in:
So I think it's safe to say that article was wrong.

This is quickly growing tiresome....
Excluding the fact that I had to clear my save and restart from nothing just a few days after official release due to the "bounty hunting fucks your faction up" bug (I was KOS in pretty much all major systems - lost like 8 million credits worth of shit) .......
There's really only 4 mission types.
1. Take shit from A to B.
2. Kill (assassinate) an Elite Anaconda. That's right, the payout may be 150k+, but you will ALWAYS be up against a 165 mil. credit ship, fully decked out. Have fun with that in your Cobra. That's the only non-faction assassination mission there is on the bulletin board. Nothing smaller/in-between.
3. Jump into USS's randomly, wasting about 70% of your time finding crap you don't need or want, to kill pirates that you need.
4. Jump into USS's randomly, wasting about 70% of your time finding crap you don't need or want, to find the 2 or 3 pieces of smuggling cargo you need. Then, have fun getting it into the station. Silent running and heat-sinks do fuck all. If you fail, the fine will be 10x the value of the cargo, and your faction will drop 10x that of what it would have gone up had you succeeded.
So as you can see, the only worthwhile thing worth doing (from a reward vs. time it takes standpoint) is running the A to B haulage missions. If I have to do another one of those......
The faction missions are just as fucking generic and stupid -
1. Take shit from A to B.
2. Pirate hunting in USS's (see point 3 above)
3. Assassinating Imperial Clippers (hey,at least they weren't fucking Anaconda's!)
I've progressed all the way from nothingness to Viscount in the Imperial Navy. Want to know what my latest promotion mission consisted of? After the previous ones had me offing pirates and traitors, my latest one to get to Viscount was .......wait for it......take these 4 medicines from A to MOTHERFUCKING B. Same old crap.
And don't bother going to the faction homeworld systems that require you to get a permit - there's absolutely no reason to go there - nothing special about them AT ALL.
In conclusion, after hundreds and hundreds of hours wasted on this -
They released about 6-12 months early. There is no content here.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

At least they're sounding like the MMO's the're trying to be....
Kill shit
Take A to B
go resource hunting.
I think that ED is trying to be EVE, but with less to do - Frontier want players to fill in the gaps, but the gaps are as big as the galaxy it's trying to emulate.

Station colors, lighting and texturing setup do vary from station to station.
Also, the more advanced lighting/shadowing makes the cockpits look darker than earlier. (try compare with lower settings)
I haven't paid attention to station details and I'm not home for christmas so I can't check myself.

You've noticed that too, huh? I don't understand this modern online mentality of "everything Developer X does is golden". It's not just here - it's Blizzard, it's Steam, it's Star Citizen. Fucking crazy.
At first I put it up to "Hmm, well, maybe their base consists of older gamers trying to relive their glory days and they don't really know what constitutes good and varied game-play - to them ,this is enough." But the more I trawl through the forums the more I'm realizing it's like some sort of sick mass cult with their blinders on. It's pretty fucking disturbing. Are these people so infatuated by the "idea" that they jump to its defense no matter what's presented right in front of their face? Or are they so desperate to defend their $60/$70 purchase that they'll ignore it all? What's going on here? A psychology major needs to chime in and explain this shit to me, because I seriously don't get it.
At first their excuses were "it's Alpha", fair enough, valid excuse. Then it progressed to "it's just the Beta", hmm, OK. Then it was "it's just Gamma, they'll surprise us with final release!", not good. Now it's released and they've moved on to "It's just been released, give them time, it's not supposed to be done yet!". What, in the ever-living FUCK, is wrong with these people? Seriously scary stuff.

I really got to stop picking up random cargo from USSs. They are labeled 'stolen', so I get a fine every time I dock at a Coriolis station, since there's always someone patrolling there. Now I'm 'unfriendly' with the Empire. At least I keep advancing with their ranks, now I'm a 'serf'.
I also found a very good thing about the Empire. They often offer a mission to deliver 2 Imperial Slaves, and give twice the asking amount for them. And since they are on sale pretty much everywhere, I can just go to the bulletin board, get the mission, buy the slaves and hand them over. Exploit as fuck, but a nice way to give myself an extra 20k every once in a while.
EDIT: I also added a few people from here. Wish the friend list was something that actually worked like in other games. Stuffing it away in the esc-menu and not giving notifications for requests is just ridiculous. If anyone want to fly together sometimes, add 'Hmuda'.

People need to start to understand is that between alpha and beta, there is some progress but it's mostly bug fixes.
What you see is what you get on final release. Between Alpha-Beta-Release. It's too late in development to do any major system overhauls unless you want another 1-2 year delay.
So in short, Alpha=Beta=Final release, what you see is what you get.

Was chatting with immunity re all this yesterday on TS, I'm still enjoying playing the game, think I got a good 2-3 hours in last night.
It definately has a lot of systems in place which dont really make sense. I'm currently just exploring building up a database of prices around me and running missions / taking out wanted traders on the way. For now I'm happy doing that.
I'm not working on any of that reputation faction shit or attempting to follow their "Storyline" lol. The rep system just is overly complicated and doesnt provide enough info as to WHAT you are actually gaining or provide any reasons as to what you'll get as a result of gaining rep with X faction and the storyline is 2 posts on the system message board pointing you to a system where 40% of players are all fighting it out in a huge constant dogfight.
Not exactly my cuppa tea that. I'm much more for the relaxed chilled approach (which I do now and enjoy) but stuff like PLAYERS placing x bounty on another players head, or creating a buy order for X materials in a system which other players can provide before you shift it to a system 200ly away and make a killer, that kinda stuff.
More over the trade system economy is a bit LOL at present.
If there is a high tech system producing large black man dildos which requires a primary metal for example to produce them. SUPPLYING that system with the primary material (it has a demand for it) should create a surplus of the black man dildos in theory.
So I should be able to shift loads of a basic resource, wait it out a bit whilst the system produces its export goods and then buy em up in bulk as the prices will drop. None of that happens, it just seems fixed and borked.
I think its something they can tinker and can sort out, mostly I think its the AI thats causing all this market fuckup, however they seem more focused on nerfing from one extreme to another basic systems which allow people to exploit and make a killing.
In the LONG run I dont think it makes a huge difference, the people that are doing all these exploits or bending the rules make a killing, get themselves a huge fucking ship and go woah yey I won! Then they log out.
Elite for me never had a REAL endgame, it was the trading and combat etc which just sucked up my life. This game CAN do that, but not until they seriously start working out systems properly.
Like I said before they released this game at LEAST 6 months too early. Why release when you've got the barebones sorted as they claim (which still have issues). Most players will have moved on by the time they start fleshing things out.
Final note, this game at present is SINGLE player. The fact you have to be online for it boggles the mind. I havent bothered to go meet immunity yet for the pure reason of there being no point? Finding another player usually is just to destroy them in pvp or send messages. there is nothing else in place which makes the experience online different?
I play online but where I am since release I've seen maybe 3 people? lol. thats taking into account I could be in SOL in about 10 mins max of jumping (about 150ly from me)
Cant wait to play this with an oculus. Would be awesome

I'm not even playing it any more.
I LOVED the original Elite, and I lived in Frontier, but this... this is just boring. Hell I get 100% more enjoyment out of Euro Truck than this, and that literally is going from one place to another.
I think one of the main issues is the idea that players should have to manually do EVERYTHING. I mean, sure docking is fine, it's old school and you have the option of a docking computer.
But no autopilot when going from one station to another? Why? It's not as if you can click 'A' and then go make a coffee, cos you could be interdicted at any moment, but it sure as hell beats having to make sure you leave SuperCruise at precisely the right moment. It's a manual mechanic that wasn't even going to be IN the final game (it was added after alpha design discussions), so I don't know what was going to be in it's place.
Combat is clunky and slow, the deliberate crippling of yaw movement sounded like a good idea at first, but in practice, it's a forced mechanic that just doesn't make the slightest bit of sense in space. Even with it's many many issues, SC's combat is so much better.
Even the landing procedure is just odd... Ok, I get the reasoning behind there being no keybind for 'Request Docking Permission' - it will make macro-trading a lot more difficult - but it's not hard to overcome, and in the end is just an awkward way of yet again making manual control more prominent.
Mining is pointless.
This game is literally a timesink of the worst kind. If there was a bit more automation for travelling, then it might not be quite so bad. The laughable idea that your ship's navigation computer has absolutely no data on any other system except your starting one, and a couple of others (which I don't understand how or why), unless you purchase them from the map screen (not from Cartography, like you USED to be able to - another convoluted design change), makes no sense to me.
And WHY you get money for 'discovering' stars and planets is beyond me, considering that data for this already exists to buy! Naturally, if you visit a truly unexplored system (which mathematically, you will, if you travel far enough), you SHOULD get paid oodles of credits, and would make exploring worthwhile - but exploring a system WHEN THERE ARE PLAYER SHIPS IN THE SAME AREA is utterly stupid.
Elite is like an egg without a yolk, a sandwich without filling, beer without alcohol.
And it's boring as hell.

I see your point here. I dont know how long i will be playing at this rate if nothing substantial changes. Maybe a month? If I start to notice some decent additions of content / gameplay mechanisms then I'll likely carry on, as it stands putting in planetary landings or focusing on that would be sooooooo daft.
Nobody goes to any of those 400 billion systems, what fucking difference does it make if you can land on one of them, they are all going to be fairly similar anyway! Add some meat to those bones ffs instead of throwing out more stuff which the game doesnt need at present.

Got to unexplored star system, land on planet with exploitable resources, start mining operations, set up trading routes to nearest station (or planetary colony), make regular money.
Introduce item fabrication. Ability to make weapons, ships, or other tradeable items from raw materials. Set your own pricing, influence regional pricing, make difference to universal economy.
introduce fleets, like a PMC, but with bigger guns. Allow players to be Admiral (or Fleet Commander), as like a guild. Allow fabrication of space stations, and claim star systems in name of faction.
Bring in the Thargoids as random Witch-space interdictions.
Introduce a new species of hostile alien with a overarcing storyline, with system invasions and big battles to save space stations from destruction.
Just some ideas that would make this game into something more than a freight simulator.
