(It is the same game and we have way more CPU power now so rendering at even 4K or above is probably not a problem, plus it's taking advantage of multiple cores too further improving performance.)

Except the game doesn't support resolutions above 1920x1080. If you run it in higher resolutions you get graphical artifacts or the game will not start. For instance it won't even run in my native resolution of 2560x1600.

EDIT: They've confirmed they're going to remove the option to select resolutions higher than 1080p in the launcher. Rolling Eyes

Oh, that sucks and well I guess that explains why I got those graphical glitches at 1920x1200 then.

Should be some way to fix that but it might be up to the developers to properly patch this during their process to convert the game to "high-definition" as they called it.

I remember 12 years ago getting into a big argument with a guy over at the PC Gamer forums - he said Outcast looked like shit and had aged badly. I said that, for its age, it looks amazing and I stand by that.

You know who that guy was? Tim Edwards. He later became editor of PC Gamer and basically scared away most of its readers with shitty WoW fanboyism. Pretty funny how big a WoW fanboy he was and he defended the dated looks of WoW fiercely - hypocrisy eh.

But fuck him Laughing Outcast gave me a ton of fun and I'm glad there's an updated version that plays better on modern systems. GOG's version had trouble with music.

I played it back in '99, awesome game. Didn't finish it, because I triggered a story cutscene way early and it didn't play again when it should during the actual mission, so I was stuck Sad

Yeah, sadly there are some technical issues that plague this 1.1 HD version at the moment (random freezes, framerate drops, and the likes). Playing at 60fps isn't always doable, (the game is too next gen Sad). Some updates/fixes will be needed.
They're working on it: http://steamcommunity.com/app/336610/discussions/0/626329820814991692/

The design is still very inspired though, and the gameplay solid enough to have genuine fun:

(Personally I will wait until everything is fixed properly to give this old gem another full playthrough^^)

There's been three or four updates already but pretty small so probably just fixing their launcher and other minor fixes, will probably take a while before we see larger changes.

Seems like the patches indeed have fixed most of the initial issues of this re-release. No more freezing, crashes and stuttering for me, it's fully playable, although there are still several framerate drops. Razz

A major update was released: http://steamcommunity.com/games/outcast/announcements/detail/136570245716370234

Quote:
Dear Adelphians,

We're proud to announce this major update of Outcast 1.1 featuring a boost of performance and nice improvements such as: unlocked resolution, unconstrained camera, extended visibility range, reduced poping and artefacts, new camera and fog settings as part of many other fixes in term of gameplay and stability.

I hope you'll enjoy these improvements and take this opportunity to thank you all for your awesome feedback and your kind recommendations Smile.

Yann

Version 1.1.5.18871

Graphics Enhancements:

new: unlock camera constraint in 1st person and 3rd person
new: unlock resolution limitations
new: support 21:9 resolution
new: extend the visibility range, reduce distant view poping artefacts

new: properly tweak the fog to comply with the mood of the original game
new: extend the skyes according the new camera range
new: extend the NPC visibility and activity range (together with the new camera settings and the extended view, this should let you discover some unseen aspect of the AI)
new: tweak the 3rd person camera settings to provide a new strategic view point
new: add the ability to pause the dialog to read the subtitle (by keeping pressed the main button)

Performance boost:
To compensate the unlocking of the resolution, the camera freedom and the extended visibility range, we had to focus on various optimisations which results in a noticeable performance boost specially on multithreaded machine.

new: multithreaded fog and water post-process
new: multithreaded polygon rendering
new: rewritting rasterizer to take advantage of SSE technology instead of MMX and making it thread independent
new: improved thread affinity and dispatch

Gameplay fixes

fixed: potential stuck in dialog (ie with zeo or zagrad)
fixed: transmission of the 4th mon could fail
fixed: minimap scaling was not resolution independent
fixed: can't use E character in savegame name

Graphics fixes:

fixed: sometimes background disappeared on specific camera angles (mainly in 1920x1080)
fixed: highly reduce visibility popping
fixed: remove artifacts related to zbuffer precision (ie visible on Cutter helmet in 1920x1080)

Crash fixes:

fixed: potential crash while changing world
fixed: potential crash while rendering shadows in 1920x1080
fixed: potential crash when leaving the Okaar map
fixed: steamCloud issue: the name of the savegame was discard by SteamServer since the file was empty

Pretty cool of them!

I just tried it, all patched up, it's smoother. Though not 60fps smooth (~50ish most of the time) with my oc'd i5 2500k (@4.3Ghz). Them filthy voxels are more demanding than Unity xD

Dear friends,

In December 2015, Yves Grolet and the founders of Fresh3D, the three original Outcast authors and IP owners, fulfilled a long lasting dream and managed to recreate APPEAL as a studio.

Yann, Franck and Yves would also like to let you know that the studio is ramping up and is hard working on the reboot of Outcast. We will be able to give you more news in the beginning of 2016.

In the mean time, stay tuned and may the Yods be silent !

Happy holidays adelphians !
