Can anyone confirm whether the steam version is drm free or not? i.e if it requires steam to run or not.
It's pretty cheap on g2a and such stores but I'm not a massive fan of steam, especially when there are drm free versions available.

Q: How do you determine if a game is Launcher-free on Steam?
A: Simple: install the game and launch it once (this step is important, because this finalises the installation). Shut down Steam and temporarily move all the files in the root Steam folder somewhere else. Locate game folder, locate the .exe, run it. Either you get an error message (or it does nothing at all), or the game just runs. If it just runs, it is Launcher-free.

Lol.

It is like calling SecuROM code activation games DRM free - all you need to do is install the game, launch it once, enter the key and it activates! After that it is pretty much DRM free! Play offline, play without disk/etc.

It's nothing like it, the first time Steam installs all dependencies for the game, if you already have those you can skip this step.

Their next patch is going to be a huge overhaul of the game systems:

Quote:
Correct, patch 5 is a bug-fix update first and foremost. The balance changes we are making are going to be very, very extensive. Think more along the lines of "overhauling attributes, skills, economy, loot distribution, item stats", etc. than "tweaking a few damage numbers".

I'd say that the balance patch will require that since they'll be overhauling stats and skills. I'm guessing bonuses during character generation will be calculated differently.

I wasn't talking about this patch. I was referring to the patch that will change game systems (rules, calculations, possibly affect character generation). I'd say you'll have to restart after that one to get the benefit of the changes.

Thought i'd drop my thoughts on this game after 60 something hours (Restarted a few times past the halfway mark now). I'm really enjoying the game, its not perfect by any means and probably could have done with 6 month more polish. Given games sometimes cost 100's of millions to produce I think it came out pretty well.

Pro's:
Writing: Mature writing style, this and Witcher are so refreshing in this department.
Lore: World, factions and artwork I thought were excellent. The factions and quests and back-stories were interesting, thought some of the radio chatter etc. were awesome.
Combat: It's not perfect, but I'ts turn based and i really like turn based.
NPC's: Some NPC's are really entertaining, unfortunately I don't think they had time to flesh them all out.

Con's:
Balance: The game is balanced poorly and it shows, All AI = rush at you and fire when in range.
Bugs On Release: It's taken 5 patches for the game to be reasonably stable and a lot of quests fixed.
Performance: You will have frame-rate drops even with super spec'd PC's.

Idgaf's:
Graphics, but to comment i guess the biggest problem would be the consistency.

Anyway hope it was successful enough for InXile to continue making 90's style games.

They did promise a rebalancing patch which will delve into the game mechanics later on but I'm not sure when exactly it'll be released. Hopefully January.

Sea (one of the WL2 devs) posts on the RPGCodex forums frequently. He said that the balance patch is going to be very thorough.

We might see it January, but I think it might be later.

I recently reinstalled Windows, so while the game is still present it's not 'installed'. Is there any way to fix the install without reinstalling the whole game? I'm using the GoG version.

I've had the same "problem" with The Witcher 2 EE GOG. I was able to run the game from the exe though but the launcher was inaccessible, so I had to install the whole thing again.

Maybe you can try manually adding the registry entries ?

There is a thread on the GOG forum from someone who wants the same thing as you Wink
