Shadowrun , Alien ,Banished , Wasteland , Thief, Endless Legend, Age of Wonders III, Child of Light, Shovel Knight or Ziggurat[/list]
Top of what i actually finished in 2014 and older stuff I played the most (due to my backlog)

Dark Souls 1 (NG++ on M/K, playthrough 1 on gamepad, messing around with steerin wheel)
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Bioshock 1
One Way Heroics
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Gunpoint
Biggest dissapointments (aka heavily behind my expecations)
Grid Autosport - i guess i expected too much from this one
AC Unity - just for technical state
Dragon Age Inquisition - not saying its bad game but i just i expected something closer to DA:O rather than DA2 - the overall MMOishness and actionnes greatly annoys me also the M+K controls/UI mess
Sacred 3 -> I expected bad game , but the trash-level of those surpassed my expecations
Ryse: Son of Rome -> I expected bad game , but the trash-level of those surpassed my expecations
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare -> I expected bad game , but the trash-level of those surpassed my expecations
Biggest surprises (aka heavily surpassed my expecations):
Metro Redux - amazing remaster
Might and Magic X - expected something really bad, but itwas pretty great
Styx: Master of Shadows - sleeper hit
Watch Dogs -> After all those bad reviews i expected trash-level game, in the i really enjoyed my time spend with it
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 -> After all those bad reviews i expected trash-level game, in the i really enjoyed my time spend with it
Bound by Flame -> After all those bad reviews i expected trash-level game, in the i really enjoyed my time spend with it
Planetary Annihilation -> After all those bad reviews i expected trash-level game, in the i really enjoyed my time spend with it
Valkyria Chronicles - sweet surpise port
Toybox Turbos - micromashines/mashed is bakc and it amazing
AC Unity - just love the redefinments of gameplay and Paris in this one

1. Alien Isolation
2. Divinity: Original Sin
3. Might & Magic X - Legacy
Nothing as spectacularly good as Bioshock Infinite or The Last of Us like last year, but overall more quality games. Those three are the only ones that really stand out for me, the but there were also about 5-10 others I quite enjoyed.
Also haven't played Dragon Age Inquisition or Wasteland 2 yet both of which I think might end up in top 5.

1. Far Cry 4
2. Wasteland 2
3. Divinity: OS
4. Middle-Earth Shadow of Mordor
5. AC: Rogue
I think FC4 will pull out the majority of GotY awards.
Given D3 was already out, I'd say honorable mention goes to RoS with that 2.1 patch.

For me, the list is the following:
1. South Park TSoT - by far the best game of the year
-----
2. Risen 3
Don't feel like listing the rest. There were some solid titles, but overall it wasn't such a strong year.
Of the games people disliked most I liked ACUnity and CODAW.
Of the games people like more than not, I disliked DA3 - though I still play it (boredom?)

When it comes to gaming, it was a fairly good year for me despite all the delays, shoddy ports, dramas, even more dramas, the usual stuff. Brace yourselves! long post is long. I wanted to keep it short but got carried away..a lot . Disgusting amounts of imo are involved as usual, be advised.
There are three games that have managed to impress me more than the others, and they all equally share the first position:
Wasteland 2
Alien Isolation
Divinity: OS
Wasteland and Divinity filled the hole left by the lack of isometric turn-based RPGs in our modern times, and they deserve praise for that achievement alone as far as I'm concerned. The former thanks to the big focus on exploration, the post-apocalyptic atmosphere and excellent dialogues; the latter thanks to one of the best combat systems ever witnessed in the role playing world, not to mention the ability to experiment and always have complete freedom gameplay-wise. I actually haven't finished these two games yet, because I'm taking it very slowly and am trying to enjoy every single detail.
Alien on the other hand was the biggest surprise of the year by far. It looked promising when it first was announced, but I sure as hell didn't expect it to reach this excellence, with Creative Assembly being a question mark and all. It totally made up for the PTSD left by Colon Marines, which is something that I thought it could never happen.
Then there are many other games that for one reason or another have managed to entertain me (I'm easily entertained these days, despite everything). In random order, and I've surely missed some because I have the memory of a hamster:
Pew Pews:
Wolfenstein (Another pleasant surprise, but not entirely surprising because it's the child of talented developers. Classic linear and irreverent shooter, done right in my book of the done right first person shooters)
Far Cry 4 (The most traditional more of the same like mum Ubi likes. Though when the same is good and the formula is not stale yet...why not. Also props for being playable, unlike Unity, Ubi must have forgotten about un-optimizing it. It happens. I'm still playing it, will take my time to complete it)
Metro 2033 Redux (A remake where nothing went wrong, what are the odds. Prettier and more polished without butchering the original gameplay, not an easy task)
STALKER Alpha (Bugged as hell, with patches invalidating saves, cheesy story-related additions and a more arcadey feel, but it still was more of the glorious Stalker. There is too much Stalker in this world! said no one ever)
RPGs
Dark Souls 2 + DLCs (There's so much to say about this game, and the fact that it couldn't hold the candle to the first one, but in the end, it still was Dark Souls, and that was more than enough for me. More than decent s̶c̶r̶a̶p̶p̶e̶d̶ ̶c̶o̶n̶t̶e̶n̶t̶s̶ ̶ DLCs also, another rarity. Dat paid downgradeton tho)
South Park The Stick of Truth (The South Park game that South Park deserved. Obsidian once again delivered the goods)
Legend of Grimrock 2 (Still the same good ol' Grimrock, only with less grim and more rocks. The puzzles made me feel genuine anger more than once. One day I'll finish it, but not now. Punching my only monitor isn't an option)
Xenonauts (X-COM lives again, nothing else to add)
Risen 3 (One step forward, one behind, and one sidestep that went nowhere, that's Piranha for you. At least the exploration was really nice, as usual, and overall it was a better game than Risen 2)
The Banner Saga (Tactical and with actual choices that mattered, although a tad repetitive, I wonder if we'll ever see the remaining chapters. [knights laughing in the background])
Action:
Styx: Master of Shadows (Probably the second biggest surprise of the year for me. A very competent third person 100% stealth-oriented game with big levels to explore. *What year is it*)
The Evil Within (The awful state of this port almost prevented me from enjoying it. Thankfully I endured all the annoyances and embraced this proper Resident Evil 4.5 in disguise with no ebola or Gears of War freelance sessions. I regret nothing!)
Shadow of Mordor (The best Assassin's Creed game released this year )
Dead Rising 3 (If it wasn't for Unity, this one would take the crown for the shittiest port of the year. Capcom god damn it. I liked the game, though, it was a pleasant timewaster)
Strategy:
Banished (One dev did what multi-billion companies failed to do. Tyrannosaurus Rekt)
Age of Wonders 3 (Not flawless by any means, but it properly scratched the 4X itch)
Defense Grid 2 (Even though it wasn't as good as the original, the formula still held up well. I need more!)
Valkyria Chronicles (I thought it wasn't a game for me, being all anime and stuff, boy I was wrong. I'm currently playing it, discovering new tactics and stuff to do, feels good men)
Adventure..sort of:
Sherlock Holmes Crimes and Punishments (A modernized and more 'cinematic' formula, more AAA-like with its pros and cons, though the outcome was definitely positive. Other companies would have screwed this up, but not good guy Frogwares)
Valiant Hearts (All aboard the feel train, a definite must play, no questions asked. If only Ubi released more of these it would be a better world)
The Walking Dead S02 (Feel train stop #2, starring Clem Why always me ntine. Not as good as the first Season, but good enough to me)
Indie:
Transistor (Underlooked and not quite as famous as Bastion; undeservedly so, too)
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (Great blending of narrative and jaw-dropping visuals, I declare the experiment successful)
Shovel Knight (8-bit orgasmic fun, simple as that)
Jazzpunk (Little satirical masterpiece, we need more games with comedy values!)
This War of Mine (Sometimes I really hate this game, but then I think it's the beauty of it. Like a hardcore, grim version of The Sims where they always die at the end)
Sports:
PES 2015 (Aka, who said that in order to be the best football game you need to be handsome. Fifa take notice please! instead of focusing on 12 yo's and pokemon cards)
NBA 2K15 (Still the best basketball game. EA aren't even trying anymore, they're still solving the Bynum Crucifixion)
The Golf Club (Best way to relax while getting angry all the time)
Driving:
pCars beta (Beautiful and functional, with lots of contents and suprisingly polished too. Still a lot of improvements are needed, but it's gonna be good)
Assetto Corsa(Always a joy to drive. If only it had more official contents and features..maybe next time)
MotoGP 04 (Milestone reporting in! they nailed the physics and atmosphere this year, unlike the 2013 version lazier than Nicky Hayden)
MXGP (Best motocross game since Motocross Madness, enough said)
Haven't had the chance to play many games yet..like Shadowrun Dragonfall, Might and Magic X, Lords of Xulima, Broken Sword 5, Blackguards and more more, but they're inside the huge backlog sack.
Same for Lords of the Fallen and Dragon Ag3, the patient pirate bear is always waiting. Some games have gone past my radar, or they've simply been skipped.
As for the failures, this year didn't disappoint either. It was... inevitable
In no particular order of rants:
Thi4f (The ABC of how to completely destroy a franchise, from the masters of the Reboos that noone asked for. Linear, contrived, unnecessarily cinematic, no jump Garut pls! only sweep and hoard candies)
Ryse (The fact that people at Guantanamo are seriously considering using it as a torture technique should already make you raise an eyebrow. Press A to send Cevat home, he's drunk)
Murdered Soul Suspect (The only investigator that doesn't need to investigate because the cinematics do all the job for him. Brilliant)
Daylight (Jessica Chobot's writing wasn't even the worst part about the game, and that says a lot)
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 (If anyone needs a rat simulator, avoid the first, decent game, and play this one instead)
Assassin's Creed Liberation (I thought it wasn't possible, but this game managed to simplify the Assassin's Creed formula. It was a remarkable achievement in its own right)
Deus Ex The Fall (This 2014 was also the year of mobile ports. Needless to say, I never asked for this)
Watch Dogs (Promises, promises, promises. Then lies, lies, lies. A chore and a bore, potential blown, a technical mess, generic characters, press Q to everything. Only the decent side missions saved this game for me. Ubisuf pls!)
GRID Autosport and F1 2014 (Making fun of Codemasters is getting redundant I know, but they can't help it really. The outstanding cockpit view was only the cherry on top of the pie, the 5% of the fans -the ones affected by presbyopia- can consider themselves pleased)
FIFA 15 (Too much focus on the silly side contents, and not enough attention to the core gameplay. But then again, it's EA. The more arcadey and faster casual style didn't help either)
Jagged Alliance Flashback (A new Jagged Alliance 2 they said. Don't mind the cartoony visuals, it will be great, they said. Don't mind the bugs, they will be fixed, they said. Ha! You fell for it, they said)
Sacred 3 (An aberration that is only the product of evil minds who just want to see the world burn)
Sims 4 + Free Swimming Pool DLC (Best drowning simulator ever. The rest will arrive later, stay tuned!)
Sid Meier's Civilization 5.1 Beyond Earth (Not a complete failure because the formula is still fun but damn, it really felt like a lazy rehash)
Assassin's Creed Unity's current unpresentable state (Ubi, oh Ubi, you done fucked up. I'm still waiting for a patch to let me 'enjoy' this game at more than 24 cinematic fps, 720p. Not sure about the game itself, but what I've seen so far didn't really impress me)
The Ultimate Spodermon 2 (Oh dear. I'm not sure which is worse, the game or the movie. Poor Spidey he deserves none of this)
I would put Call of Duty here as well but what's the point anymore. Developers come and go, yet we still play the same game over and over. The word disappointment has lost all its meaning xD. If anything, it was still better than Rambo: The Game.

I still need to play quite a few games (Wasteland and South Park are waiting for me), but so far it's sure 2 titles will end in the top 5: Dark Souls 2 and Alien: Isolation.

... I've barely played any 2014 games
Risen 3, Dark Souls 2, STALKER Alpha and DX: the Fall were all left unfinished so that leaves Metro Redux as the best 2014 game.
That I've finished.

Couldn't nominate 5 great games this year, and Alien is definitely not among them, either. It was so fucking cosntrained, I quit it during the second "chapter".
GOTY has to be The Witcher 2. Don't care when it was released, I played it this year, so there you go.
