And here we go again Laughing

Quote:
Whilst the financiers are blaming pirates and a leaked screener for the failure of the third "The Expendables" film, the franchise's creator Sylvester Stallone seems a bit more clued in.

Attempts were made with the third film to broaden the appeal of the franchise, namely by including a bunch of younger cast members and changing over to a PG-13 rating from an R. Stallone now believes that the ratings change was a big mistake. He tells Crave Online:

"Absolutely unequivocally yes. I believe it was a horrible miscalculation on everyone's part in trying to reach a wider audience, but in doing such, diminish the violence that the audience expects. I'm quite certain it won't happen again."

Despite the third film earning $100 million less than the second, another instalment in the series is still planned. In fact, this one may be more 'out there' than expected:

"I have actually entertained the idea of putting the group into such an unnatural environment that it, in an of itself, creates extra suspense and tension: the 'fish out of water' scenario. That environment might not be time travel, but nearly just as jarring."

Stallone was also asked about the possibility of one of the key Expendables team dying considering that the key members from the first are pretty much still kicking by the third film's end:

"This is a big conflict for me because in an R-rated film it is difficult to believe that none of the heroes die. I personally just believe that the characters become identifiable and their demise could put a dark cloud over an audience exiting the theatre after seeing the film. But that may change in Expendables 4."

Sci-Fi Action?

Just shoot and glue in together some fighting scenes with splosions, and call the resulting montage EX4. No need for story or character development. Laughing

Will watch it, of course... On a day when I'm absolutely bored out of my head and don't have anything else to do. Then again, I'd have preferred staring at a wall for 2 hours instead of staying through the end of the mess the third movie was. Laughing

Expendables in space could be nice (basically like Aliens), but it will probably expendables with zombies or in post-nuclear apocalypse setting.

Sci-fi and a hostile environment, I wonder if they'll cast the Predator too this time around xD

The Terminator will be a better choice. Very Happy And an even better choice will be multiple Terminators. Terminators vs. The Expendables. This I will watch. Very Happy

Sylvester Stallone has withdrawn from taking part in the fourth installment of “The Expendables” franchise – despite it being the biggest upfront payday in his career with a salary over $20 million.

Deadline broke news of the departure, saying it came down to Stallone and Nu Image/Millennium chief Avi Lerner not finding common ground over various aspects of the film from director to script to visual effects.

Stallone and Lerner have disagreed in the past with the pair often eventually working out, but that doesn’t seem to be the case this time. Lerner acknowledged the differences to the outlet but isn’t willing to give up yet:

Quote:
“We’ve got disagreements with Sly, but we’ve had them for over a year and a half. Right now, each one has opinion. We agreed on 95% of things, but there are certain things in production we don’t agree on. I don’t think it’s over, but what write whatever you want. In my opinion, it’s not dead.”

Right now it’s not clear how Stallone’s exit impacts the film. Stallone co-wrote all the films and helmed the first one.

its interesting... usually id say ONE person wouldnt really matter, given its always been an ensemble film.

but as i think about it... the expendables really is a STALLONE film. his grumbly slurry gruff leadership and hero-character are pretty integral. without him, i just know id always be wondering 'yeah but wheres barney'.. it'd feel less like the expendables and more like the pretendables™.. even if it did have all the others back in it.

He really cared about it to say no to $20+ million, good for him. Those Millennium folks probably wanted to add even more worthless 'nextgen' actors, ufc stars and cinerpmatic effects for kids, completely bastardizing the franchise which was conceived as a throwback to the action flicks of the 80s. I'm with Sly on this one. Razz

Later..

“You know, I think the first and second one were terrific,” he said. “But, the third one, I thought my part was not written well. It was also not playing well in the movie, as far as I was concerned. Maybe other people believed differently. But I didn’t believe that I had any value in the movie. I love the franchise, by the way. I think it’s a spectacular franchise, The Expendables. I think that Sly has good ideas, what he wants to do with it, and I think if they write a really good script [in] which my part is very well-developed, I would do it. If not, then I won’t do it.”

well he probably thought it was an interesting conceptual way to move the franchise forward... sadly you just cant predict what a fucking mess its going to be turned in to by a shitty director and incompetent producers and studio pressure.

Some interesting quotes, considering the discussion in the Terminator thread. What'd the think the writing was like in Genisys, written well?

"You are back in your iconic role, and we don't have to hide your age or anything, and the script is written by your pal's pal, and $$$".

Of course the script itself wasn't good, but it could have led to a film with some cool moments if it was handled better. For example, the opening was supposed to be the ultimate fanservice what with it being set in the future war, being a sort-of-flashback to T1/T2, and bringing to life unproduced scenes and concepts from T2. People have been asking for more future war stuff since T2's opening, and here we finally got it, only it was completely unmemorable.

As chiv said in theory perhaps he liked the concept. "Oh, T1/T2 flashbacks! Oh, my skin ages, that makes sense, they can explain why I aged. Oh, I will fight my T1 self? Haha, I'd like to see that!"

Maybe the plot will be that he's using a rollator to get to the space ship, and massive explosions will ensure while he tries to get to it. Maybe even a wheel will fall off and he has to do some actual walking.
