So, I would have liked to say I have finished the game, but.... you can't actually finish it 100% without using the companion app. This is scummy even on Ubisoft levels.
And I don't mean "run the companion app once", you have to finish multiple "missions" which can take 36 hours(!) to complete
So yeah, I'll hold off the usual "the first to 100%, na na na na na na" screen for later. (You'll have to deal with 99% for now )
So, as to the game.
It took me 70 hours to complete it 100% (or 99%, but the remaining 1% after I unlock the stuff in companion app should take less than 15 minutes or so), which makes it the longest AC game to date.
The graphics (especially the lighting) are excellent. It truly is one of the best, if not the best use of lighting I've seen in a video game. There are some low quality textures here and there, but you can expect that from pretty much any open-world game.
The face mo-cap really reminded me of LA Noire, Ubisoft did a great job at that. The voice-acting is fantastic as well. The pop-ins, however, are quite jarring, even on an SSD. Thankfully I ran the game without additional problems even on 1.0 (never dropped below 50 FPS), and on 1.2 it basically stuck to 56-58 the whole time (all settings turned all the way up apart from shadows and AA).
The combat is the best in any AC game so far, it stays moderately difficult all the way to the end of the game because of the inclusion of snipers. It's great to see Ubi finally do a decent combat system, even if it gets a lot easier towards the end.
The city of Paris is the best city ever crafted for an AC game. Simple as that. Extremely fun to run around in, and because they included seamless transitions between some of the buildings, the entire thing just feels as smooth as ever. Previously my favorite city was Acre from AC1.
Anyway, the things I liked before I delve into spoilers territory regarding the story stuff
+ The graphics, if your PC/you are lucky and it works- I am aware of the problems people have, but I have not seen any graphical glitches, hence it's hard for me to talk about it
+ The combat system
+ The beautiful, BEAUTIFUL city of Paris
+ The soundtrack, voice acting and mo-cap
+ The writing, right until the end of the game though
+ The improved free-running
+ Coop and Heists missions- the latter are extremely fun and require a lot of patience, something I didn't expect from a Ubisoft game
+ Massive crowds that really help you get immersed in the game, never have I seen so many NPC actions before in a game
Now for the shitty stuff:
- The fucking ending, Jesus Christ, what the fuck happened there (more below in the spoilers)
- The Rifts, a fantastic idea with so much potential, yet all they did was basically platforming levels?
- Technical problems- while I didn't experience them, you can't deny that the game was released in a simply unfinished state; an additional month or so of fixes would work wonders
- Did I mention the ending?
Overall, for me it's the best Assassin's Creed game so far, if I had to rate it I'd give it a 9/10, if you're not an AC fan I really recommend you play it anyway, just to fuck around in Paris, but if you're not already on the AC hypetrain Unity won't change your mind, but it's still a fun game (I guess it's an 8/10 for non-AC lovers?)
Anyway, now with the even shittier stuff:
FULL BALLS-OUT STORY SPOILERS BELOW:
Spoiler: | I fucking hated the ending. It was really, really bad. I was actually really interested in the story, especially when Arno got thrown out of the Brotherhood, and for good fucking reasons I might say. The exile from the Assassins was one of the better twists this game provided. Up to Sequence 10 or so the game is really well-paced, you really see how the whole Revolution thing is intertwined with Assassins' and Templars' doings; again the Templars are this mysterious influential force behind certain events, instead of being hurpa durpas bad guys like in AC 2-ACB. You could really understand Bellec's betrayal as well.
But then it happened. They killed off Elise. Oh, much wow, very surprise, not like we've seen that in LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE AC PROTAGONIST'S STORY. It wasn't even well-done, they did it in the most cliche, predictable, and eye-roll-inducing way possible, in a feeble attempt to add a little emotional baggage to the ending. It's almost literally just "oh, Arno looks sadly at her dead body for a minute and stoically puts flowers on the grave, ROLL CREDITS."
Her death made her look like a fucking idiot, plain and simple.
I expected at least a decent ending cause Alex Amancio was creative director once again. But that was not to be. I felt my heart sink as Elise left Arno behind and stupidly ran after Germain despite knowing that he had a powerful Piece of Eden with him, which he had VERY CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED ONLY SECONDS BEFORE.
Simply put, Elise's death is the main character's death that made the least impact on me despite her being one of my favorite characters. She was really well done, a sassy, charming and a powerful woman.
So you also find where Arno puts Germain's skeleton after he dies, which was your main mission in the modern-day story. But even after finding it, nothing happens whatsoever. "Okay, good job. We'll contact you if we want something more" *CREDITS ROLL MORE* The modern day was just... pointless. It might as well not even be in the game. We learn absolutely nothing aside from stuff about the Phoenix Project and a little bit of what the Assassins and Templars have been doing. The very little modern day stuff that comes is in the form of the info you find in The Rifts, but even that is not as well fleshed out as it was in AC3 or AC IV.
A damned shame, because, as I said, up until the ending the writing is really good. Oh well. |

i only played up to sequence 6 because i decided that as long as my performance are in 20-30 fps i will wait for a patch, but up to that point, and after doing a few sidequests and roamed around i agree with you. IMO it's the best AC game ever and it does everything i always wished an AC game would do - good combat, better stealth, wonderful settings, seamless interiors, customization, open ended missions..... just a huge amount of good decisions in this AC. (like in FC4 where it's like FC3 made with all the better design choices they should have made in FC3)
just a shame i cant play ACU properly and have as much fun as i could have if it was better made. hopefully patches will resolve this!

I might try it but Im not really sure its for my version since I have rld but with 3dm 1.2 patch so is this one still neded ?
Also I read on ubi forums people also having that problems, some said 1.2 fixed it but for me it didnt, some say you need to progress with other missions until red dot for fucked up one dissapears and then come back to yellow mission are and only then you can finish it without crashing
EDIT After that fix I could finish that mission no problem, thanks pablocoo

Neon, it will take you several days (if not a week) to unlock all chests, artifacts, etc from the companion app. Some missions are 24h long and a friend cannot speed up the mission time -as in the ac4´s fleet. With only 10 assassins it´s even longer, that´s why they put the premium version. It really pissesed me off.
Best thing you can, is buy nomad points via uplay rewards and get the higher level assassins, otherwise it´s a pain in the ass, mostly because collecting nomad points require that you leave an assassin to collect them.
I already have all rewards from AC iniciates rewards (Ezio and Shay outfits as really nice), though for some reason it didnt unlock altair´s.

What's bizarre is that we can't pick up bodies or dropped weapons from enemies. Plus the lockpicking is ridiculous. Why couldn't they keep the AC3 system? The one move I miss from combat is using another enemy as a shield when someone fires a shot.
Really strange how they've omitted certain features from AC3,4.
That said Arno is like the amalgamation of the best parts of Altair and Connor combined with a helping of a sardonic sense of humor. The way he taunts some people in the game is really
1 and 2 are still amazing.

I actually thought that we could play these missions before reality set in. Too much work to create assets for only one level/sequence
1 and 2 are still amazing.

i think the storys are from the former games. "washington an the wolf" -> ac3? "fear and loathing in florence" -> ac2? "devils of the caribbean" -> black flag?
maybe some dlcs coming up which arent announced yet? dunno
triumph of the borgias looks like ac2 or brotherhood too as well as the lone eagle does loke like ac3? murder of the levant looks like altair from ac1? dunno about the rest

- "The Emperor's Shadow" - Shao Jun - this probably refers to Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China (which is included in the Season Pass)
