IMO the key of this game is the pace of advancing.
if you research too many tech and make all your cities beutiful and stuff, you are not going to have a strong army and you will loose very easily, because the AI usualy stack 5-10 units in each city, no matter how far ahead you are in the tech tree, if you have no army when they attack you are doomed (unless ofcourse, you have 5 cities which can build a modern tank in 1 turn, but i doubt it...)
and if you get too behind in the tech tree, you are going to suffer lots of casualties, so im still trying to find the best pace of playing the game.

Catapults/cannons etc will deal collateral damage to all units, so bombard the city a for a few turns before moving in with your units!

Right I understand that, but bombarding just seems to reduce city defense to 0%, I haven't seen it do damamge to stack units. For that I actually have to attack with my catapults and I end up losing them for meager gains. Catapults are far to expensive to be throwing away piecemeal like that. :-/
Is there no longer any negative side efffects for having a really large army? In other civs there were maintenance costs that would skyrocket when you build alot of units, but if this one doesn't have that I'm just gonna go nuts and build 100 knights and just go crusadin'

Use the catapults/cannon to ATTACK not bombard to damage all the units in a tile.
Also, check replacementdocs.com for some nice tips.

The biggest problem this game has is that every review I have read has been written by someone who is already a fan of the series and the ammount of information the first time player has to digest is equivalent to a fucking MCSE. The reviews mainly concentrating on improvements over previous games. I'm determined to find out why it gets 9 out of 10 accross the board. It's obviously a massively intricate game but after playing the first game it did seem like the "emporers new clothes", although it was quite funny after I'd taken my time building Taj Mahals and theatres , only for the game to display '60 moves left' and the Fascist police state next to me to suddenly declare war.

SO go read a review of Civ 1. If you're too young to have not played any previous civ games, why are you bothering to now? This game is definitely a 9 out of 10 when compared to the others in the series (IMHO) and can really only be compared to itself as no other game matches the epic world history gameplay.
Besides, why are you basing your gaming opinion of online reviews from people paid to give games good reviews? If you don't like the game, then it isn't for you, but for Civ players who have been in this genre since "In the beginning...". Seriously though, this game is alot more complex than the first one, and if you really want to get into the series, go get Civ1. Graphics don't make this series fun, and I'm sure people are still playin Civ1. It'll give you a good feel for why this series is so damn popular and addicting.

Why do you need to jump to the defence of the game with an argument that doesn't make sense. What I said was the game gets very good reviews. I don't get why because every review I have seen doesn't explain why the game is good in its own right, just how it has improved over previous versions, and i'm determined to find out why it has it's reputation.
I'm sure your English is better than my, whatever your first language is, but it's not a football team, you don't need to jump to the defence of a game just because you like it. Theres room in the world for more than one opinion.

The game is incredibly simple really, it's just slightly overwhelming to the newcomer. Stick with it because once you realise it's a breeze you'll start to enjoy it more and more.
This version of Civ is not the best, in fact it's one of the worst.

Actually it's no doubt the best yet, but it's buggy and the engine sucks

Been playing a new game since the original post, on quick speed instead of epic, with agressive AI and no time victories wich improves the flow of the game IMHO. Definitely recommend turning off time victories for new players.

In what sense is it the best yet. That's a rather numb statement given the lack of improvements and the fact that it has a killer bug regarding game performance.
The old Civilizations still stand the test of time, this doesn't push any boundries at all.
The only plus point is the AI regarding diplomacy, it has tangibly improved quite a bit in fact, but it doesn't make up for the lack of innovation or additions.

The civ formula hasn't changed much since the first game, but this one probably has more new features than previous sequels did. While it's hardly as revolutionary as Civ 1 was, it's still the best Civ out there. It's also very moddable, so the community will hopefully make it even better.

As ispep said the improvements between CIV4 and the previous ones are marginal.
I still prefer CIV2 to this. CIV2 broke such new ground it was insane. CIV4 added new graphics, religion and a incredibly low amount of diplomacy. To be perfectly honest any semi-talented mod group could have done this game years ago.
Still it's civ and i love it.

[Quote] Well then I completely misunderstood your post and I apoligise. It just sounded like you were slagging the game because you didn't understand it. As far as improvements over previous Civs, aside from graphics and religions, there isn't much. I do LOVE the new Civics system, and the game has a much better sense of pacing. Despite some god awful diplomacy bugs, it's still the most fun I've had playing civ.
Heh, np. I didn't make my point well, the more I play it the more I like it. I guess I was just sounding off as the first 20hours of frustration/learning curve are passing.

personally my opinion is this is the best civ in the series since the first one, which i started playing about 10 yrs ago. not only did they make a huge successful leap to 3d, which many series have failed horribly at, they streamlined the gameplay into a whole new sexy addictive beast. anyways i am surprised people think there are few additions. maybe its because they should have been there years ago and feel so natural?
anyways im blown away by them all: religion, unit promotions, multiple branching techtree, new transparent diplomacy system, great people system, more terrain options and features, multiple civics replacing monolithic government choice, a multiplayer that was included from the get-go and much improved upon, music--over 300 songs from all the time periods and representing each culture, more buildings, more units, more improvements, more leaders, more statistics....and of course, the friggin sdk coming soon...
anyways i just dont see what more anyone could ask for...and how any other version added more additions than this one. anyways besides a few bugs which dont impact my opinion because those can be patched and they arent game-stopping.. this game is perfection.

Hi,
Is there a way to increase a nukes chances of success?. They seem to be completely ineffective against advanced Civilisations a lot of the time you are unable to even launch them at larger cities but when you can they get shot down. I've found that stealth bombers and battleships have the best chance of reducing a cities defence. To be honest the super weapons were the worst part of C&C but as soon as I developed the tech I stockpiled 40 of the bastards.
Cheers.
