Over the past three years, at least several dozen items of food that used to taste pretty good, have suddenly started to taste like shit. Going from tomatoes, types of bread, ravioli, pizza, chocolate(milk), pasta sauce, cheese, etc. etc. etc.
Why? Because the manufacturers decide that, instead of increasing the price slightly, they just throw in a bunch of SHIT that ruins it completely. Something that costs €3 and would have maybe cost €3,30, now still costs €3 but has zero flavour.
Ironically, my job is designing and editing labels for food and every day I see how the amount of proteins drops and drops, the amount of fat and sugar increases (read = less meat, more crap or sugar added).
And what happens? People stop buying the food. We used to print about 400.000 labels for Ravioli for a big chain of supermarkets until they changed their formula and it started to taste like shit. The amount printed each month dropped to ... 100.000. Do they seriously not see how it's affecting their sales? Ugh ...

I don't have the exact source to support this, but I heard big companies (especially fast food chains) are putting glutamine in food to enhance the taste, but if you eat it too often, your body becomes "immune" to glutamine and then you start feeling the original shit taste. Maybe it's that.

they sell 400.000 with good stuff in it -> 3e
they sell 100.000 with shit stuff in it -> 3e. but, shit is cheaper, workforce is smaller ...
probably the right price would have been 2 euro for the shit ingredients, and they would have keep the margin the same.
now they have an extra profit of 1 e / item.
numbers from my ass : if at 3 euro they got 10c, now they got 1.10 c by keeping the price the same, but using cheap and shit ingredients.
40.000 vs 110.000.

i presume was a joke, but wth:
ravioli : eggs (chickens), flour (wheat), water.
filling : cheese/meat/whatever.
you can "grow" them. |
Yes, I'd love to see chickens and goats in his flat.

I'm guessing the OP is referring more to "pre-made" food versus vegetables, meat, fish, etc.

Aye I hear ya, a lot of times they chose for lesser quality shit instead of raising the price just a bit. The moment it doesn't taste as good anymore I just change brands, flavour is still priority for me.
When I still lived in Belgium and had the luxury of 4 bakers and 4 butchers in a span of 5 mins ( same with stores) I sometimes went to 2 or 3 different ones for specific items because they were the best at it. Some of my coworkers thought it was a bit insane...
Now I'm in peasant ville in Sweden and don't even have a fresh baker or butcher in my town

Nah, also meat, vegetables, etc.
Some recent examples:
Around this time of year, you can buy clementines (it's a Sinter Klaas thing). They used to be really nice and sweet. The past 5 years, every time I bought some, they were sour, some were rotting in the wooden box I buy them in, and they're all hard to peel. Turns out the reason for this, is them importing them for a cheaper price from cheaper countries and they FREEZE them. The same goes for a lot of vegetables like tomatoes, strawberries, etc. They taste like shit.
Another example: I bought mince meat two weeks ago for a BBQ. The burgers I made with the meat fell to bits on the grill. I had to bake them in a pan and they shrunk to half the original size. Of 600 grams of meat, I had less than 300 grams left. Reason? They added a shit of water to the mince meat to make it cheaper to make. I call that straight theft.
So yeah, it pisses me off. I pay the same but get crap in return. And since we work with companies producing food, I have a few people I know well who work there and they basically say that super markets force them to LOWER prices so they're forced to go cheaper. Bunch of cunts ...

well, let me put it simple.
i grow heirloom tomatos for example.
if i would go to the market with it i would have some problems.
1' 2-3 days after i pick them up, they are done. and because they are ripe, i cannot transport them that easly.
2' i canot grow tomatos in 2 moths, like mass producers do. i plant in spring, i got them in autumn (most of them, cause i have some early ones.).
3' i need at least 5x more space to grow them vs mass producers.
4' because i use heirloom's, i need to be very carefull with them for deseases and so. tasteless hybrids dont' have that issue.
5' if i had to sale them, i need to ask for at least 3x the normal price. but is not worth the trouble. if i get a lot more tomatos than we eat, i just make extra juice from them.
same with the other stuff.
about that mince meat, dont buy minced meat.
find a store on which you can chose the meat (fresh) and have a mincer to mince the meat in front of you. or just get your own mincer.

See OP, that was your first mistake right there
Although I bought some for some meatballs recipe I've been trying with.
But most times you should buy "whole" meat.
As for fruit thankfully I (think) I've found the supermarket with the best one.
But when I go home I generally bring back locally grown fruit, that is sooooo much better than anything on the supermarket.
