let's take shit port EW which with my current config i can run stable at 30 fps sometimes droping in to 27 which is about same performance with the same config but i7 4770k@4.7ghz, so yeah whatever |
Yes, let's base everything on a single shit port. What's next, taking GTA4 as the ultimate GPU benchmark?
If a game runs at 60 but has drops to 20 FPS, raising that 20 to 30, or even 25, already makes it "feel" a lot smoother. Or in the case of a true V-Sync without / with bad buffering, raising your minimum from even 59 to 60 makes all the difference in the world

This. Honestly, go for ANY i5/i7 and the performance boosts from a Q8200 will be astronomical. I guarantee it.

Maybe going for a 4690K is as better ideia than a 4670K no?
The price difference is not much as far as I know and the 4690K is more efficient too.

Isn't it the same chip but with a higher bin therefore higher clock speed?
And yeah, waiting for skylake
I think I've waited long enough

Since I rarely buy any HW new, I never needed or bought the newest, I have mostly bought used shit. You can save a shitload of money. No idea how the used market in Portugal is though, it's reasonably active here in NL.

Although... my Q8200 is used and is rock solid stable so far.

Finally Toni
Best of luck with the future purchase!
Unfortunately I have no useful tips or advices for you, since I'm out of the loop since late 2011 (when I bought this current rig), and permanent lack of funds is keeping me away from all sorts of news. *gives a hug*
One thing is for sure though, when I jumped from the glorious e6600 to dat i2500k it was a night and day difference, truly. It's gonna be good.

I'm seeing a 8€ difference, might even go for the 4690K

The 4690K has better TIM (paste), so it'll overclock ever so slightly better. For €8 you might as well really

Don't go for AMD. I don't have a phenom, only an Athlon, but honestly, $70 price difference isn't worth the trouble of not having a really fast system.
I should also start saving monies Can't play shit anymore :'(

Then in the near future I can get a proper z97 mobo

I can't build a new system until official USB3.1 controllers show up on-board. Its such a game changer for the next few years in terms of portable interface speed. Other aspects like future SATA4 (when!??!), PCI (next-gen), HDMI 2.0 (coming up) I can likely wait on although having HDMI 2.0 would be a real nice bonus.

That's just a firmware bug by the looks of it, the "eco" mode doesn't actually do anything.

That's down to their PCI-e lane allocation. Lanes are generally shared between multiple slots.
The SLI sticker requires that cards can be run in x8/x8, Crossfire requires x4/x4. MSI's gaming 3 has only put 2 PCI-e slots above x1 on there and they run at x16/x4 (which can't be turned into x8/x8 because it would leave 4 lanes "open"). Gigabyte's 3 slots are either x16/0/x4 or x8/x8/x4; but if you use the x4 slot, all x1 slots are unusable and vice versa
It's more marketing than anything else really, especially the fact that Nvidia require x8/x8. PCI-e 3.0/x4 is still the same as PCI-e 2.0/x8 and that is still only a 2-3% performance hit at worst.

Well, after reading some more reviews I think I've settled on the hardware:
i5-4690K
Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 3
Crucial Ballistix Sport XT 8GB DDR3 1866MHz
Total: 420€, 50 more that I was planning on spending but what the hell
Now I just have to wait two more weeks and hope that there is no freak price hike on any of those

Why so fast memory? Isn't regular 1600MHz enough?

And that price is on par with pretty much everywhere else.
I mean, I could get ye old and reliable KVR again but the difference is 3€ FFS

Hmmmm... weird.
I just checked and... yeah. The price difference between 1600MHz and 1866Mhz is indeed very small.

You cannot see difference between 1600mhz and 1866mhz ram anyway in real world.

I think the amount of memory makes a bigger impact than speed
