So Ive had my Linksys WRT54G for several years and I finally got sick of having to power cycle this thing every couple of days. These routers are not reliable at all. This device in particular is a router, 4-port switch, wireless access point, and a dhcp server Mind Is Full Of Fuck

A lot of the time the dhcp on the Linksys WRT54G fails to give my devices a new IP. Too many tasks for a weak device maybe. I finally got sick of this way of living lol and got myself a switch.

Cisco SF300-08 8-port managed:

For a 8-port switch, this thing is fucking glorious! PC Master Race

The amount of options you get with this switch should be able to accommodate any home network IMO

Il be using two more interfaces eventually. It actually took me about 2 days to get this thing set up the way I want (its not plug and play at all). I was getting a bit frustrated with the dhcp relay options. This thing also has layer 3 routing capabilities, but I haven't had time to set this up yet. For now Il leave the routing to the Linksys.

Anyway so now my switching and DHCP is handled by the Cisco and the routing and WAP is taken care of by the Linksys. Haven't had any problems with my porn whatsoever. I finally have reliable internet Very Happy

I noticed networking threads aren't popular here but hey Im excited for the uninterupted porn Very Happy

I SPY WITH MY EYE A WRT IN THE BOTTOM PICTURE.

Those things are crap now days. I hope you're not still using it.

Immunity was bitching about how much he was paying for like 30Mbit internet and he told me he was using the WRT. Made him get a new router. He got it going and checked his internet, it was actually like 120Mbit that he was paying for but his router wasn't able to handle it lol

Lol for my current home network its definitely overkill at the moment. I didn't realize this thing would have so many options. This is my goal network for my home at the moment:

I wanted a managed switch to be my DHCP server. I also wanted the option to manage the bandwidth for the "IPTV cable box." These are the two options I needed at this very moment.

At work we use unmanaged switches because we have a domain controller which takes care of DHCP tasks. I dont have a server in my home so thats not an option for me.

A few weeks ago we visited some friends at a new debeers UK company located here in NY. They actually dont have a domain controller here on site. They use a vmware server, some security appliances, Cisco Catalyst 3650 switches, and Cisco APs. Their entire infrastructure is managed by the debeers UK team. I have had to coordinate with these guys a bunch of times. The Cisco managed switches looked like some pretty reliable piece of hardware so I figured why not!

Except I forgot that these UK guys are seniors and have 20+ years of Cisco experience and they breeze through all the setup processes using the serial port and command prompt. And here I was struggling for 2 days with the web interface Laughing
Focused

But my switch is finally set up and running like a beast. Has not fucked up any DHCP requests and my network has been smooth. By now the Linksys router should have fucked up, requiring a reboot but its doing fine now that the DHCP and switching has been given to another device. The thing Im still trying to figure out is how to give a second DNS server to the DHCP clients. I was able to add the second DNS to the DNS table, but I seem to be able to give out only 1 DNS server to the clients. While this is working fine for now, Id still like to have the 2nd DNS as a backup. If I cant find the solution in the manual, I might have to contact tech support

Nice keyboard!

Thanks! Its a 'logitech illuminated keyboard' that I purchased back in 2009. Been running very strong. My gf spilled Sabon body lotion on this thing a few months back. I then washed this with soap, water and a sponge inside of the shower. I let it dry for about 3 days and still running great. I think I definitely took some pics of it being wet and meant to post them here on the forum just for laughs. I will try and find the pics this week haha Laughing

PS. the Cisco wireless APs are insanely reliable. They blow away Ubiquiti Unifi enterprise APs. But Im not going down this route lol I need a very very basic AP with basic security

Is gigabit ports really necessary for a simple home network like the one I have? My main priority was a reliable dhcp server. The devices on my LAN don't share anything with each other

My current ISP max speed is ~20Mbps, I wouldn't benefit from having gigabit ports at the moment. Also the IPTV box I have, Im actually trying to limit the bandwidth on it. I also forgot to mention I won this switch on ebay for about $35. For a reliable dhcp server, Il take it!

For me right now and probably for at least another year or so, 100mbit will suffice. As long as the dhcp does not fuck up, Im happy. When I save up enough money for a new house etc, perhaps Il upgrade to gigabit and set up a full home network one day

You do realize Megabit is going to affect your whole network as a whole right? Not just your internet?

+1
Transferring lots of data over that local network at 12.5MBps (in reality it will be less because of overheads) will be a pita. 1000Mb would mean up to 125MBps, which would be higher than the write speeds of a HDD.

on a serious sidenote: why do you enable STP in this setup?

Yeah my router had 100mbit ports and transferring bluray rips took like 50min between computers, when i bought gigabit switch for my lan it took only 5min. If you are moving stuff over local network then you really want that gigabit port.

Fucking WRT54 that I own limits my internet too. Am on 64mbit but it goes to 30mbit max. Have to reset it every time I want to download something big, then it'll download for some hours @ full speed only to jump down to 30mbit again.

If your're broke and on wired, look into the Asus RT-N12, it's cheap and is a rock solid router.

Meh Im still very happy with this device. By now my internet should have lost connectivity requiring me to reboot the Linksys WRT54G, but everything still running and working smoothly. Ive been using the Linksys WRT54G since 2004. I haven't experienced this in years Smile
