Hey guys, looking for some answers on a couple of things before I head out and buy one. At the moment Ive got a great setup with XBMC in my room, but would like to get a standalone so my dad and bro can enjoy the fruits of my (and the scenes) labour. My dad and bro watch a lot of TV and being in the UK are sick of waitng months before stuff hits our screens! The great thing is, usually everything is dvdrip by that time which is great! Ive been scouting around the net for some standalones like Yomada etc but have a couple of questions: How do standalones 'work', is it similar to say XBMC, you insert the disc and select the file then it plays? or do discs have to be burnt a specific way, filenames have to be set a specific way etc. Basically would everything 'availible' work on a standalone? Say the dvdrip of House MD or the latest 'HR.HDTV.AC3.5.1.XviD' tvrip play etc. Thinking maybe get another Xbox and set it up specifically as a MedaCentre for the living room, XBMC has played everything Ive thrown at it so far but a standalone would be a lot cheaper. Feel free to reccommend some good standalones as well. Cheers for the help guys

A while back I bought the Philips DVP642. It plays just about everything you would want it to. Just about every scene release works. Every now and again it will tell me that it cant handle something because it needs a qpel codec, maybe 2 dvd-rips in all the time that I had it. best part was it cost me $50. Philips IS a great DVDPlayer. About Hitman: Movie (2007) Vin Diesel is a hardcore gamer, and absolutely loves the Hitman series. For that reason I have faith that he wont destroy the movie. Response: Well, Uwe Boll probably loved the Alone in the Dark games.

Philips can't play those HR.HDTV.AC3.5.1.XviD files though, max. resolution it supports is 720 x 576...

Maybe he thought that the res of the file would be resized or something?

So normal tv/dvdrips would work but not HR? Any standalones that they do work on? Is there any issues with films not working, read a few things about qpel which Im still reading up on?

The only errors I have ever gotten have been with the previously mentioned Phillips play on two movies using qpel. one was The Life Aquatic and i cant remember the other. but 90%+ of the movies and tv-rips I have tried have worked flawlessly.

take a disc with you to the shop and try it out on the player you wanne get if you can. A buddy of mine got himself a Panasonic one recently and he couldn't set the region code (no hack available) and also the damned thing can't read files in subdirectories. Another thing i've noticed with my standalone is these things often have problems with the xvid codec used in tvrips especially. the picture seems somewhat sluggish as if the chip isn't fast enough to decode the data in realtime if you know what I mean. Bottom line: if I where you I'd go for the XBMC solution
