Philips IS a great DVDPlayer.
About Hitman: Movie (2007)
Vin Diesel is a hardcore gamer, and absolutely loves the Hitman series. For that reason I have faith that he wont destroy the movie.
Response: Well, Uwe Boll probably loved the Alone in the Dark games.

Philips can't play those HR.HDTV.AC3.5.1.XviD files though, max. resolution it supports is 720 x 576...

The only errors I have ever gotten have been with the previously mentioned Phillips play on two movies using qpel. one was The Life Aquatic and i cant remember the other. but 90%+ of the movies and tv-rips I have tried have worked flawlessly.

take a disc with you to the shop and try it out on the player you wanne get if you can. A buddy of mine got himself a Panasonic one recently and he couldn't set the region code (no hack available) and also the damned thing can't read files in subdirectories. Another thing i've noticed with my standalone is these things often have problems with the xvid codec used in tvrips especially. the picture seems somewhat sluggish as if the chip isn't fast enough to decode the data in realtime if you know what I mean.
Bottom line: if I where you I'd go for the XBMC solution
