What are your thoughts on these?

Are they worth buying for mainly games etc, or are they really a tool for engineers or suchlike? Or just a gimmick?

I want higher res than my current 1920x1080, and of course better quality all round. Mainly for game playing and of course the usual web browsing etc

Any thoughts would be appreciated as I want to upgrade my current 24" and am unsure what to go for.

Thanks

An example

21:9 screens are supposed to be quite nice for gaming, thanks to the wider field of view (if games support it properly). If one was to to get a new monitor and get more than just a larger size and resolution out of it, I suppose the choice would be between this and a 120Hz monitor at the moment. 2 in 1 would be real nice though Very Happy

Would you be so kind as to provide some examples/links? I am really not clued up on monitors to be honest.

Also do widescreen monitors 'chop' off the sides of the screens if widescreen is not supported? And does the lack of height cause issues? (hopefully someone who has one can answer these) Obviously I have read reviews etc, but I trust the members here for honest reviews

Many thanks

Maybe for gaming they are OK, but for anything else, they would be very uncomfortable. 16:9 monitors are already not comfortable for web browsing or work due to being too wide, but at least you can snap windows to left and right. With a wider monitor, you'd have to work with three columns, and that is not very comfortable.

For browsing, I find a monitor in portrait is the most comfortable. Go for a Dell U2713HM, a quality 27" panel, which will give you no distortion at portrait mode.

Regarding FOV, when the game does not support proper FOV, you will have terrible distortion. The good thing is you can set the game to a normal 16:9 resolution with the same vertical pixel size, and you will see black bars on the sides. A big waste of a monitor in this case.

I have a LG one, and personally I love it when gaming, especially in games like BF4.
I also got it because I edit a lot of film in Premiere, AE etc, and my workspace for Premiere is great with a long/wide timeline.

Regular usage with browsing etc doesn't really bother me. I have 24" 16:9 monitor hooked up too as my second monitor, so I use that should I need any more vertical room Smile

But yeah, all in all I'm very happy with mine, but it might not be for everyone.

Didn't see much shift in horizontal angles, which is good for these wide panels.

Mine is very similar, it's a 29xxx-model too, just can't remember the exact name at the moment

There are also the slightly curves ones, which might give you less perceived distortion due to being round, rather than flat.

Sort of related question.

My vid card has both HDMI and DVI, am I better off with:

HDMI-HDMI
DVI-DVI
HDMI (vid) to DVI (mon)
DVI (vid) to HDMI (mon)

or (as I suspect) does it really make no difference? Or, is DisplayPort best?

Unless you plan for the cable to send audio in addition to video there is no real difference. I think all of those inputs should support the resolution of that monitor and quality wise it's pretty much the same thing for all three.
Use whichever cable you have available, but HDMI or DP might be the more convenient choice (easier to plug in and out Very Happy)
