This widescreen fix the guys is working on... is this only going to work for people with 21:9 ultra wide monitors, or would the majority that use 16:9 also benefit from this?

Exciting!

Everyone who has widescreen monitor will benefit from this fix.

Usually it scales but the plugins (Flawless Widescreen being the main programs.) also have descriptions stating what it fixes.

EDIT: Was answered.

Leaving fps/aspect ratio/fov etc etc issues aside, which I'm sure I can adapt to if the game is great.. how is the game?

I'm a huge fan of Mikami's Resident Evil / Remake, Dino Crisis and Resident Evil 4. Does it live up to them???

There's no adapting to stuff like that in my opinion. Those are part of the game, the game can't be great when those things are so bad. They affect the core game in a bad way. As for how the game is, I didn't play it myself but I've seen a huge chunk of it on a stream. It's really.... "okay" and nothing more. It's nothing like those you mentioned in my opinion (well maybe a bit in theme / setting), but more like a mix of Dead Space (mostly 3) with inferior The Last of Us elements. I for one can't be arsed with it.

The widescreen fix?

I don't think it will alter performance much, might have some small drop but having fixed FOV, aspect ratio and other stuff is definitively worth it in my opinion.
(It might affect performance if the game truly cuts off the stuff rendered where the black bars were but I don't think it'll be much of a difference in framerate.)

I am asking because someone reported that he suffered 10fps drop when he removed the blackbars (via the console).

Oh I hadn't read that, from how I understood it the game seems to be heavier on the CPU than GPU so stuff that requires additional GPU power shouldn't be too taxing if that's true.

Yes it is heavy for CPU because its coded so shit, it uses on i7 mainly 1 core and rest cores / threads are getting shitty usage, this results in low GPU usage a.k.a shitty performance. This is why there is also so big FPS difference on SB->Haswell, needs very strong single threaded performance (which would not be shown if all cores would be used good). In other words, only way to fight against japanese coding is with brute force Laughing

Awesome, glad to hear that, thanks for the responses. I will wait for this fix before trying to play.

Not a bad game but definitely not as good as Alien: Isolation, IMO.

To me Alien is 8.5/10, so TEW is a 7/10.

how long to beat and how many chapters are there?

15 chapters, 10.5 hours on TEW version of 'normal' difficulty.

Dammit

My stock i5 2500k is gonna cry then. Was hoping it would use the GPU more (i have a GTX 970) but look like it's not the case so i expect lots of inconsistent FPS when there is more AI around etc

I explored quite a bit, but after a few hours the game was getting a bit tedious, and so my desire to explore decreased.

I'm pleased with how long it took me to finish. Alien: Isolation took me 15 hours, this took me 10.5, that's 25 hours of entertainment I did not expect as my expectations from these two games were low.

Try creating .exe shortcut and add -com_allowconsole 1 to target.

Code:
\TheEvilWithin\EvilWithin.exe -com_allowconsole 1

If it doesn't work, there is a launcher available on rin. Smile

Add it after "target" in your shortcut

Like this:

"E:\The Evil Within\EvilWithin.exe" +com_allowconsole 1 +com_skipIntroVideo

To open the console press INSERT

Yes you need to press insert.

\The Evil Within\EvilWithin.exe" +com_allowconsole 1

that's what my shortcut looks like
