Hi guys,

I am having a bit of trouble with one of my external drives.

It is a 2TB 3,5" HDD. I use it to store my media files and hook up to my WDTV.

However, lately the drive looses connection to the WDTV during play. It (sort of) reboots, however files will not play until the media player has been restarted (likely an issue with the media player).

I tested the drive on my PC and first ran Scandisk (or the equivalent on Win7). It found some errors, but this did not make any difference, the error remains.

I looked up the SMART values and this came up:

This unfortunately does not mean much to me.

The only thing I noticed is that the drive can get really hot (up to 50° C), which seems to be because of a badly designed casing. I could change the case or open it up, but I am not sure if that will help at all.

Can anybody tell me if there is something wrong with my drive? Or should I run some other tests?

I'd send that SMART-data to the support of the HDD-manufacturer.

Thanks!

It tried that, they told me it was probably the controller. As am out of warranty, I bought a new external case.

The drive now works again, but ONLY on USB 3.0. It works perfectly fine on that, but as soon as I connect to an USB 2 port, the drive does not show up in Explorer. Windows picks up something of the drive, but in Disc Management it says that the MBR is faulty.
Connect back to USB 3.0 and everything is fine, no MBR error just nothing.

What could THAT be? It is not the external casing, I checked with another HDD. I guess the drive itself is messed up?
