No armour shows on your characters. It doesn't matter anyway, pretty soon you'll want to take that armour off. By the time you can wear the best armour in the game, it's a liability because of the way that energy weapons work. You probably want to stick with armour that has a rating of around 5 or 6.

Oh and apparently blunt dmg works nicely against heavy armor, too. The power armor is supposedly supported by a motor for increased mobility but the character loses combat speed as if such a motor doesn't exist. You'd imagine "Power armor" to make you at least stronger if not quicker. If you're a melee character and you wanted to use a Power Armor (space marines ftw) then getting to your enemies will be slightly harder at least with the set I have now. What's the point, really. Lazy game design. Hunk-a-junk.
I'M WEARING POWER ARMOR, RIGHT NOW

Game mechanics certainly aren't on par with everything else. Skills are manly used for opening containers. While weapons and attributes are poorly balanced.
Combat initiative is single most important combat stat in the game. It heavily outweighs accuracy that you anyway gain with skill points, and also isn't as important for certain weapons (machine guns, heavy weapons, shotguns).
Luck, criticals, number of APs and high accuracy that enable headshots are vastly inferior to high combat initiative (speed/awareness), and speed per ap that you gain from high awareness and speed attributes. That combo enables you to act twice, or even three times per combat, and get with ease into cover or out of danger.
I'm too far to start again, but my other playthrough will definitely have all the main Rangers at one luck and a minimum of six in both awareness and speed.
Oh, and what's with charisma, other than being used for leadership? It says it has some effect on conversations, but I really haven't noticed any difference.

They nerfed charisma during beta, apparently. It's pretty much a dump stat now, the same as luck. There are a couple of NPCs though who's recruitment is charisma locked (minimum party charisma total of 20-25+). Probably not worth what you have to give up in exchange though. There are a whole bunch of threads over on the official forums if you are interested in min-maxing.

Am I missing something or are the shrines completely useless except for a few measly xp?

They can have attribute points for you to allocate as well.
@Vikerness I haven't finished it yet, taking my time, but I'm playing on Ranger difficulty and I find the difficulty to vary a lot; sometimes I get completely trashed, but it depends on which missions you decide to take on first. If you're lucky and pick the right missions it is a smoother ride I'm sure, but I haven't, so quick-load/quick-save is my friend.

Turrets don't point forward when they're not hostile anymore, they point sideways.

All shrines should grant a single skill point. Given there is something 15 or 20 shrines in the game, that makes them extremely valuable. They are more or less mandatory on the highest difficulty.

STATUES grant skill points, shrines on the world map grant ATTRIBUTE points.

I had three shrines on the Arizona map, giving me only XP. They mostly had some text on them.

Erm, no they do give +1 Stat points, unless something else is giving stat bonuses too. Will test it soon since I have a new shrine on the map.

I thought the only source of attribute points was one every 10 levels.

Just lost 5 hours of playtime...
At the prison and I thought, let's hide all my chars behind the sandbags and shoot a turret with my sniper... whole party dead so I giggled... Load game and *RAGE* No autosave and the last save was from when I ate 5 hours ago. fricking stupid autosave... Apparently timed autosave is off by default.
Have to redo everything.

Same on five map shrines in Arizona. Got some macabre finger necklace in loot hole before one of them, tho. -1 perception, +1 on two skills.
