Miami Vice has been one of my personal favorites of the last decade. I really find it hard to bring words to explain why. So gripping, so well made, no unnecessary drama, so realistic to the point it is almost surreal, the cinematography, the music choice. It's perfect. Collateral also had many of these qualities, but since it is more of dramatic piece, it gets a little older because you expect the story. Mood is still fantastic though. With Miami Vice, the story is much more subdued and underscored, while it presents pockets of a much larger world.
I expect nothing less from Mann here. After a foray in a period piece with Public Enemies, which also had some of the above qualities I couldn't describe well, and television, with Luck and Witness, the time has come for more Mann.
I really recommend Miami Vice (the director's cut). See it once, then see it with the commentary turned on. It's just fantastic. I can provide audio files of the commentaries of Miami Vice and Collateral.
Agreed about Miami Vice, although I much preferred the theatrical cut. The way it just throws you into the action in that nightclub scene completely bowled me over in the cinema. The boat race opening in the DC lacked that impact IMO.
Oddly, I also preferred the theatrical cut of Ali, which is one of my favourite films.

I have to agree about that one to a point, the sudden *boom* after the credits is very good for a first watching. But later, when you are familiar with the story, it does make sense to start the pocket of the story a little earlier to show that they have been working on the that case for a while and quite invested. I also liked changes throughout, and the subtle but significant changes in the final act.

Consider what the grain has allowed you to see, the mood it allowed to be set. There is little grain in the more lit scenes, but during night and dark scenes, yes, it is there, but it opens up so much. It's a good trade off.
