What is the easiest (and cheapest) way to share one or more external or internal HD's over a network? The main PC will not always be usable, so they need to be independent/standalone of this. My router does not have a USB post so that's out.

Would one of these connected to my router do the job?

Or something else?

Thanks

I was going to say if your router supports it, it would be a good idea... but no USB port wont work.

Might be actually cheaper to get a new router that does support USB storage vs the share center thing you posted. But ya... you pretty much got the idea already anyway Smile

Thanks, any suggestions for a decent router? I should also point out everything apart from a laptop will be wired to the router. Not that that makes much difference I suppose.

Also it would be nice to be able to link internal and external hd's and make them all shareable, that's why i thought the nas enclosure would do the job?

a nas is designed to be an independent shared drive with little to no management after initial setup
that's what i would get in your case
it's also a full arm computer on there and you might be able to run irc or rtorrent on it

I only want it to house internal drive(s) and/or link an external drive to it.

Self builded NAS using FreeNAS or nas4free. Grab some 50€ Dual 2 Core CPU PC and put 2-4GB RAM in it and you will have very solid NAS.

As a Synology DS212+ owner I can tell you don't waste your money on these because they are damn slow and expensive compared to self builded.

My next project is Fractal 304 Node, i3 4330, 16GB ECC and 6x 3TB WD Red build. Wink We can always compare what can you get for a 1000€ from Synology/Qnap/Drobo/whatever. Smile

I only want something to share a HD or two on a network, not a mini PC.

So, would one of these do?

Or would I need to buy something else?

Thanks
