PostPosted: Fri, 19th Sep 2014 03:17    Post subject: Upgrade time
I have the following:
Silverstone Fortress FT02B Black USB 3.0 ✓
PSU ✓
Monitors ✓

I plan to get:
2 x GTX 980s ✓
512GB SSD ✓

I have no idea about (and am out of the loop with):
CPU, CPU cooler or motherboard, the CPU is over 2 years old now so with a new one I'd need a new MB too

I'm guessing 16GB or RAM will still be enough (until the new COD releases). Is it worth getting DDR4 RAM?

Thanks for any help

Tbh, you cant really upgrade your current 2600K, the difference in gaming even with absolutely top notch extreme model is going to be couple fps. Ofcourse future titles could use some some extra cores, but seeing how optimization goes these days, i have my doubts. Have you OC´d the 2600K? It will go 4,5Ghz for sure with little tweaking.

You already sold your "old" hardware?

2x980 sounds absolutely crazy. Do you have a 4K setup and intend to play star citizen on that?

What games exactly doesnt run good @ 780 SLI? on a 1440p monitor? Sounds pretty crazy, unless you are those guys that uses insane amounts of AA and then i can say that even 980 SLI aint enough.

Nice save Troll Dad

But yeah, keep your 2600k. You can get something that's a few percentile faster and more efficient.. but at an enormous cost, so it really isn't worth it right now, not unless you're willing to spend a lot. I've said this a lot, but Intel really shot themselves in the foot with the Sandy Bridge procs -- so unbelievably awesome that even now, 3-4 years later, there's just no need to upgrade.

I'd wait til we have full Mobos with the forthcoming game-changer USB3.1.. that will be utterly massive especially now with the bonus that it supports both DisplayPort and HDMI!! Shocked

I have an 8+ year old PC that I need to upgrade so not sure I want the latest mid-level Haswell-E i7-5930k, 32GB DDR4 QUAD ram, 980 GTX, 850 Pro 512GB SSD, etc or wait til after Windows 9 x64 ships in late Q1/early Q2 2015 next year before finally taking the leap. I seriously need a powerhouse but NOT Dual-Socket or SLI/Crossfire however USB3.1 *MUST* be on-board as its such a game changer.

Well, won't it be the hard life from then on, gaming with two 980s

Eh, if you got the cash why not. It's a hobby you invest a lot of time in.

It's good that you got two tho... If you happen to get bored by them next month you can always send one to me and Sabin Cool Face

Edit: Btw what kind of fps do you get with ARMA 3 on your current setup?

Ouch that is indeed power hungry, tried the beta and well it wouldn't work anywhere decent on my setup.
Hoped it would have been better by now, but hearing about how it runs on your system I'm not even going to try it. Smile

ARMA sounds however poorly coded if it chugs so badly when much action is going on. The game isn't remotely used in standard gfx benchmarks for new card so its not a good valid test due to its poor optimized code.

Damned Arma!...so good yet so inconsistent when it comes to keeping a steady framerate. Razz I hope your new cards do their job fine, but I fear that max details/60fps is something that only our grandchildren will be able to witness xD

As far as I remember, the SSAO alone eats ~10fps (and the difference between on/off isn't that great), you could try that. And any AA different from FXAA puts the video card on its knees Sad. But them 980 bros will fix that Fuck Yeah
