Played it once through Noble (no space race, no time) on epic time. Must say it's extremely well done. Honestly though this could have been a mod to CIV3 that adds religion. But all in all a VERY good game, worth every penny i will spend on it once it arrives in sweden.

My complaints are:
-It CTDs about ten times every five hours i play it (with every driver updated mind you)
-The music doesnt really start for me, had to enable it manually by selecting the appropriate soundtrack-folder as personal music-folder
-It has rebooted my comp five times so far
-Spearman beats tank still annoys me

I am however very happy about:
-Religion, man so fun
-GFX, 3d in a smart way
-Technology in a smart way, one route is no longer does the best
-Diplomacy, it actually exist this time Very Happy
-The main-menu, jesus fucking christ im starstruck - i havent had chills run down my spines from a game since i played KOTOR1 (when you realized you were Revan) but this very simple menu (with much help from the music, which fucking ROCK) got me at hello Very Happy Very Happy

Dude did you ever play civ..

The whole idea is that you take the civilization of your choice and form it around your will.

The only reason the germans adopted Nazism was because of their loss of WW1. If the peace at Versaille wouldnt have been as degrading the second world war wouldnt ever have happened. The idea with Civ is that you build your own history, non of what happened in real history is true.

What fun would it be if you knew for a fact that 1939 germany would invade Poland and you could do nothing about it. Or any other historical facts for that matter. Everything until the year 2005 would just be a long wait, you couldnt do anything.

As i said the whole idea with civ is that you shape your own history. Sure they could have come up with fantasy-names for every civ but that removes the fun in selecting a favourite civ and making it the greatest nation in the world.

The "changing history"-feel is a big thing in Civ, but you changed it from the beginning, not from 1930 or whatever, that's what made it so great.

If you want a historically accurate game this just isnt it mate. Wait for a mod or play any of the million ww2 (or aoe3 etc) rts's if you find this annoying.

At that pace you could demand a new Civ each year with the correct countries and correct names. The fun is to choose your own path not to start at 2005 but 4000BC and after that do what you will. Nice for you mate. I've tried to find some answers at Firaxis webpage but no luck. Seems alot of people are having similar problems but no answers. The CTDs dont really bother me since autosaves somewhat saves my ass most of the time but another problem i had at my end game was that each time i loaded a new save the first turn (the first time i pressed enter) took about 1-3 minutes to load. And that's not a normal memory-leak since i just loaded the exe fresh. Oh well, all in all im happy. Awesome game but some bugs and glitches. Im sure that within a patch (or hotfix/tweak) or two most people will be playing this game flawlessly.

there's a nice earth map with all civs. much more enjoyable.

holy shit, how can you not be gushing about this game when someone has done this *already*...fuck I can't wait to see what people mod into this game!!

me personally, while I realise civ is all about historical context, I want more future options. Fine, the official games ends in 2050, and I can keep playing, but screw Future Tech. There are tons of interesting new technologies we're developing TODAY so why can't they be in civ? I want to launch defense or offensive satellites that I can control. I want hover tanks, lasers weaponry, more futuristic military units, more environmental stuff like clean/free energy (ok...free energy is pushing it lol). More than anything, lack of Laser techs pisses me off. I want Shock troops with laser rifles dammit! Force Field generators for me cities!

But yah...fun game nonetheless.

Things I've learned playing Civ:

5 Civs on Cutom Continents on Huge is a bad idea.
Huge map on a meager system (512mb ram, slow CPU, moderate GFX) is a REALLY REALLY bad idea.
Time has no meaning, and employers don't appreciate "But I nearly conquered the Japanese!" as a valid excuse for tardiness.

Very Happy

Re: Skeptical

Jeez you're even more masochistic than me! I made it to about 2001 AD before Montezuma crashed my party and started taking over cities by the boatload. I decided to give up (I was losing badly anyway) and it took the game 10 minutes just to unload! I checked my task manager and noticed that my page file peaked at over 1gb! LOL it's the first game in recent memory to ever consume 1.5gb of system memory. Not even Everyquest 2 gets that high.

I have a Sempron 2200 (1.5ghz), 512, GF5200fx (normal, not the lite or ultra versions if it matters)

I think I'll stick to smaller maps.

Anyone know how to get the full globe zoom out on small maps? I've only been able to zoom that far out with Huge level maps.

Hmmm...maybe Im doing something wrong but Ive successfully won the game twice now, using the standard play mode, cant remember what difficulty it was on, but it was one of the medium settings. I played as an American-Islamic state Very Happy
Twice, ive won because of a diplomatic victory...

And I havent done anything special, and my first game, NO ONE FUCKIN ATTACKED ME! I had one band of barbian guys attack my swordsmen, but thats it.
And it seems I advance in tech far quicker than any of the other nations...

Is the game supposed to be really easy? I mean, it hardly gives u time to build up a conquering army in the normal mode (along with building tech and shit) and it seems they encourage the peaceful side to the game...so why make it incredibly easy from a diplomatic, non war view?

If u start war with someone, it changes, but i have yet to win a major war against the cpu as during the time i spend creating units, it creates tech ANd units so it seems, so I end up brining a sword fight to a gun fight...

We need a trainer that stops the time progression or slows it down consideribly.

Oh, does the Epic setting in game speed mean slow? Cuz I was playing on normal speed and it takes roughly 2 1/2 (consistent hours) to win a diplo victory...

I have had no issues running it apart from slowdown.

I dropped the settings to medium, and its been running fine and fast ever since. I would have liked to have had it on high, but I really dont mind, civ is one of those games that the graphics mean nothing on.

I like some of the improvments, and dislike others. I still think higher units get beaten to often by men with sticks, but on the whole its a lot better than what I thought it would be, I was dreading the 3D engine, but they have done it pretty well.

the thing is i WANT to do something about it, but the scenario of germany invading poland in order to take over EU will never happen in civ 4 (unless you mod or creat ur own scenario) i want to creat my own history, but right in in civ 4 the history im making is so irrelevant to real history that it doesn't seem it would ever happen. if i wanted to start as China and take over asia, then bring it to a world super power, i can't. becuase i'll probably start in Europe or North American beside non-asian countries.

in order to change something, something has to be there in order to be change. which means if i wanted to change history, the point before i changed it should be the same as the real history. i dont want a historicly accurate game, i just want to START historicly accurate (such as the origin area for each country) and THEN change it. beucase right now the history im "changing" doesn't even seem like the real history.

it would be great if they had a checkmark option where it asks you if you want all the countries to start at the their historic position. so then instead of the germans occupying poland, it could be the england. instead of england starting and fighting beside the chinese at 2000 BC which doesn't seem more like a imaginary world than a "changed history"

EDIT:

thats what i was thinking to dude...but im playing, well did play the 2nd time around, ona medium to high difficulty and it was the same shit...occasionally give a country a tech or a gift of resources and u win a diplomatic victory by 2020.
No one attacked me or anything, mind u, they did war amoungst themselves...

All in all, I think this game comes up a lil short in terms of length. Like, I wanna be able to have all the techs and shit, build my army up and then go out a conquer ppl - by 2050...it seems to me u cant...not when it takes 20 turns for this and 30 turns for that...

And like i said, if I just build units and not building upgrades, my guy's get murdered as the cpu always seems the be able to build upgrade buildings and units at the same time. So they come at me with some leet rifleman, and I have a crew of swordsmen....blades dont stop bullets ya know? Laughing

archers fortified with 80% bonus ftw!! they can even take out tanks if you are lucky Razz

try to have a larger population, i have i think 5 billion people living in my country and i can build nukes in 5 rounds in my main cities, and most modern units in <10 rounds.

and also try adjusting you city priority to production.

and if no one attacked you, that means you are too nice ^^ try to provoke them or something lol, the easiest way is to demand them to give you all their gold.

and another thing is, before you defeat a nation, if they have any gold left, demand a tribute from them and they usualy accept in order to keep good relations with you, then use the gold to upgrade ur troops and attack them Razz

Ok granted it was up against musketmen and grenadiers, but My first run through I tried (and succeeded) in a space race vict. Syco: I had all techs and managed to win before 2000. I'll check my high score list but I think I won that game in 1995. So it is possible to research and do everything.

These are all low difficulty wins mind you. Gonna try on a higher difficulty tonite. There's no shame in losing, right?
