Perhaps not the right subforum for this but does anyone know if theres a simple way of permitting domain users to install applications on their Windows 7 machines without adding them to the local admin group?

i dont think you can. you can make them admins or you can deploy/publish aplications by yourself.

when i was admin on win 2003, i was deploying software/users/groups. i dint allow anyone to install any software.
no ideea if is possible in the latest server os, but in 2003 was not.

like a workaround, i presume you can strip all rights you want from admin group after adding them Smile.

I believe frogster is right. However, at my work, as a kind of alternative, we have a service account that gets elevated permissions via another action specifically to install software packages from an approved source. We regulate what those packages are of course, and have specific settings auto installed for certain things, but it allows users to "pull" from a depot of sorts.

That MIGHT be an option for you to look into depending on your setup.

Thnx for the help guys, we dont make final desicions when it comes to domain settings, gpo's etc so I wanted to find some easy way of doing it instead of creating local admin accounts on each computer where the user needs to be able to install different software. Not too many accounts but still enough to make it a pain to do manually.
Very odd that M$ removed the rights given to the old power users account, that would've been perfect for our needs. Dont like the idea of giving a user full admin rights so they can install simple applications, its a huge step in the wrong direction imo, but then again most things M$ do is...
