Well yes I meant a newznab box, and of course I meant nfohump and not nforce, force of habit.

As the talk was about newznab I thought it was obvious what I meant, apologies that it was not.

Newznab is an indexer, doesn't provide access to binaries, only to NZBs Smile

@ Pumpy: I honestly don't know. Judging from the Tweakers.net forums, XSNews is pretty good, but obviously their retention is not Astraweb's (which is what I'm on now). I might just use them as a fill server (block account) for now though, because Highwinds/Astraweb is still pretty good for the most part. I've actually downloaded stuff between 900 and 1200 days old just fine a few times; although not at full speed obviously, but other than that they fill up my 120 megabits perfectly (to the point where I even have to limit it to 110 Mbps to avoid not being able to browse the web anymore ).

.

considering I have my own box running it and it is backdated to 1500 days (A - S / T - Z doing now) I am aware of what it is. (and for what its worth was running it in mid November unlike most of them that have popped up)

EDIT //

someone ban that fucking idiot already.

and there he goes.

XSNews wasn't so great with DMCAs for me when I tried it - had stuff missing along with Astraweb (tried via SSL-News). Retention is a bit of a weak point for EU providers, but to be honest I think I can live without stuff that is over 1000 days old. I remember the good old days when 500 was considered a lot Smile

Also, I don't recall anyone calling Newznab a Usenet server that holds binaries Razz

Supernews is giganews.

There is a chart somewhere with all the backends and their resellers.

Is there a hidden meaning here? Like they already exist because this is pretty much what everything on usenet looks like nowadays.

to continue this thought process. At first I figured usenet was just getting flooded with garbage to destroy it, now you guys are telling me that my old usenet that I used to love is hidden underneath this mess of coded filenames. I don't know what to believe anymore. Mind Is Full Of Fuck

I don't know what the hell you're talking about, 80% of all uploads use plain filenames, which is why it's so easy to get shit taken down. I can't remember the last time I saw a coded filename tbh.

Regarding what HD said though: that's what used to be the case with FTD here in NL before they got shut down. The "spotters" would create their "spot" in FTD and use the unique FTD ID as the main identifier in the filename. After they got shut down (which was almost 2 years ago now) the number of posts with coded filenames has dropped drastically. Its "reincarnation" hasn't picked up on that idea yet though Sad

FYI, i got astraweb and eweka atm. Subbed to eweka for a month to test the dmca shit. Same as Astraweb. Really pisses me off. Both take down stuff faster than you can count to 3.

Eweka is DMCA compliant and is not really a "Euro" provider, so it's not much of an alternative.

How can you look through those pages and still claim the majority of files arent coded? Are you talking about the results when actively searching? because then, no shit sherlock. In the end I guess it depends on which group you're looking at and the ones I follow have almost completely changed.

I usually browse by posters, but they are slowly disappearing. Sad

Last time was probably a year ago, and I was still using astraweb. Gotta be quick though :/

Wife and I actually just cancelled our Astraweb sub. There's just no point, Usenet turned into a shitpile of deleted/obfuscated/passworded crap and for the money we were paying, we'd rather spend it on Netflix to be honest. KAT has all the latest movies and series anyhow, no issue with trying to find the one specific file that isn't obfuscated or missing half a dozen blocks preventing repair.

Go for private trackers, less hassle than usenet these days and you can get everything anyway.

Ratio was never a problem, not even when I was on 'slow' speed internet.

tweaknews is the best dmca-wise, sure they also comply eventually, but usually after atleast a week or 2, the other providers take the stuff down before its completely finished upping.
astraweb turned to shit years ago, havent touched it since then.
