Happy 20th Anniversary, DooM! Oh man... 20 damned years already... that's just depressing Crying or Very sad Very Happy

Yeah, it's a lot of time really when you think about it. Razz Doom was among the first games that I played on my very first PC back then..so many memories. What's even more depressing though is that 20 years later, it's still more fun than the majority of the shooters out there. Something went terribly wrong. xD

You want another gamepad fps like rage? where enemies wait on screen
while you manage to turn the bropad and aim at them. Laughing

I need to finally fully complete both dooms. Never managed every time i modded it.

Its just very hard compared to most fps's today. finding keys and stuff, always found that tough in oldies as

I really got into fps's around the post quake 2, unreal void,
where a ton of games were fighting for the throne and
the mechanics were moving away from weird level design with key hunting.

Hexen's and the first heretic were insane with the levels... i would get lost all the time Embarassed

Indeed the levels can be annoying but never too much in my opinion. There's always some element of surprise hidden somewhere which either amazes you or fucks you in the butt, or both. But it's always a very pleasant sensation even if it can be frustrating. Razz Shooting is still immensely fun, especially with the Brutal mod, it will never get old really.

Yep, I think o got as far as episode 2 on nightmare, or whatever last difficulty is.

I got to some level filled with those flying red ball demon's, in a maze like environement.

Got owned there a lot, and then I moved on to something else. But this was before I was diagnosed mustcompletitis. Laughing

To anyone looking for a good megawad: play Vanguard.wad. If anything, you should play it to experience the truly spectacular Map3, which is by far one of the best maps I've ever played for Doom 2: it's basically another take on the Hunted level of Plutonia experiment (pissed archviles running all over the level), except on a far smaller map with truly mindblowing design.

Too bad there's far too much ammo lying around and most levels become far easier than they should be. In spite of that complaint, though, a highly recommended wad.

This gives a whole new meaning to the sentence "pushing an engine to its limits".

I mean, holy shit, you can hardly believe this is actually the Doom engine:

well, it's cheating quite a lot
3d objects and 3d characters especially
if 3d objects are allowed, you can do anything
i would accept displacement maps, and you could do similar objects with them, but proper 3d is just cheating

Yea, there's probably a line or two of doom code in the source engine, doom3, others of that lineage

The source code for the softdisk games Carmack worked on were released recently. ( https://github.com/FlatRockSoft/ )
Somebody went digging and sure enough, there's code from Catacombs in Doom3;

There's also this TC in devlopment (demo available) based on the old Apogee platformer Hocus Pocus. It looks nothing short of amazing.

Classic Doom 3 is one of my absolute favourite remakes and it was a crying shame the developers only ever did Episode 1. This new one looks to be remaking the entirety of Doom 1 and 2 (thanks to Doom going open source, I guess this is a legal route as opposed to how it was back during the original Classic Doom 3 stuff) so I'm really looking forward to this - despite the visual quality not looking exactly.... mindblowing.
