Yeah, its great they are a choice when the going gets tough, and not forced onto you like companions are in most games.

I simply play it like gothic games, if I can't solo it, I go somewhere else and come back Smile

Bones always kept me entertained. His voiceover is so silly that I giggled quite a bit whenever I started combat encounter or visited some new places. Even now when I am mage with those OP fists I use companions. I don't know, it just feels better than going solo.

Uh, is magic OP?

I wanted to become a mage and train my way up but literally the first spell I buy (lightning) rekts anything in its path, on hard mode. I just have to dodge and spam A, easily killed the Betrayer Lord on hard, and my magic is only at 40.

Are there gonna be harder enemies? I feel unstoppable already and I'm just a cadet.

Just finished the game.

Used a shotgun and later a musket on almost all enemies. Should probably have learned proper sword fighting.

I just discovered that if you time your attacks correctly, instead of spamming the button, they execute a lot faster, which pretty much doubled my attack speed. Very Happy Can't believe how much I like this game!

Haha yeah, timing is vital, since the attacks chain up into semi-invisible combos that make it easier to neutralize the threat(s).
Sometimes the hit detection is faulty though, and when the secondary animation doesn't trigger, making you wave the arms pointlessy in the air, you're very much left with rants Very Happy (Thankfully a quick dodging usually fixes everything).
I tried to focus on magic to limit swordfighting, but since it's a tad too overpowered, I'm keeping a low-level buccaneerish profile for now.

I'm roleplaying a drunken, thieving, crystal mage. Very Happy

First think i invested in was distilling and sneak, and buffing up toughness, magic, and a tad of influence and spirit.

So far I am still not OP, but haven't joined a faction yet.

I love how there are quests spanning more then 1 island and they all gel nicely no matter which island you start them on.

Took me 40h to finish, overall very nice game, although the last island and the end was poor compared to the rest. Now i wonder what PB is doing next. There was some spoilers in the talk to the other nameless hero about "doing something together in the future", but could just be another bad joke as well. Technically they have to work hard to bring their engine to next gen. Anyone have some infos about their plans?

Melee is again completely shit in Risen 3, even with high melee skill it is easy to get overpowered by several low level enemies. Muskets and magic on the other hand are completely overpowered.
I'm focussing on melee because it's the most fun, and when I get in trouble I resort to magic to end the battle quickly.

Muskets were already extremely overpowered in Risen 2, crazy that PB didn't fix the balance issues.

I'm playing melee only and on hard.
I'm severely overpowered and still have Kila, Calador and the Fog island to go to.
Can't complain in that department.

This was literally the case in every Gothic and Risen title ever. They stay true to themselves Laughing

Still have to find time to play this, maybe after the first patch hits.

Is a kind of battlemage (melee + magic) viable in this game? I haven't spent much glory yet since I don't know what's the most fun in this game.

Just finished it man after about 24 hours.
Game is very enjoyable overall between the playtime of about 2-17 hours. Because of the boring beginning and because your char are Jesus after a while.
There also were some very nice landscapes.
And encountered no performance problems or other bugs during all the time. At least in one department Piranha Bits seems to improve Very Happy

8/10

Thanks

I'm at 27 hours and currently doing Kila. I haven't been to Calador or the Fog island at all yet.
A good 40 hours or so should be possible. Smile

About fifteen hours into the game myself, fog island and gnome island are pretty much 100% complete. (Both for quests and such and also every monster killed and every item picked up. - Yes that includes all the oyster shells.)

Antigua and Tacarigua are mostly finished as well, should be something on Tacarigua (A armor piece.) but I haven't found it yet.

Demon Hunter isle is fairly complete although I can't cross to the other side of the island even by swimming (Teleports you back even though the opposite shore is like 10 meters away.) or using parrot flight (There's a invisible wall over the collapsed bridge there.) so there must be some other way to access the things I want there. (A weapon in particular.)

Voodoo island is about halfway done but I don't think I can pass through the stone door without progressing the plot further and that means joining one of the factions. (After beating up and looting all the members - and every other NPC in the game -, they have nice stuff and unlike Gothic they only stay angry for a minute or so afterwards so hit & run attacks are perfectly possible.)

Guardian island I've only done the very first part of by finding the faction HQ and doing some odd jobs here and there.

Need to find a prospecting trainer somewhere (If there's any damn ore veins left.) since apparently I've been wasting gold, iron, jade and crystal veins carelessly though the same goes for hunting I suppose since I clear the islands of all life so I've missed a number of components that could have been useful.
(Though you still get more than enough even for stuff like golem hearts and the like since some of the merchants stock a decent supply of that stuff.)

Gnome and Fog island set me up for from what I've read all the way until the end of the second chapter in terms of armor and weapons though I've since found a better sword and upgraded one of the rifles although I only really use the pistol or crossbow depending on what I have in ammo reserves. (Which is near fucking unlimited since every merchant carries a infinite stock of base wares which include knives, bullets, lead shot and provisions.)

EDIT: Oh and crab coast might have something left but I'm fairly certain I found all the locked chests.
(Nothing too amazing but you might as well pick them, lockpick doesn't break and even so most merchants carry spare picks or you could use scrolls, depends on your character abilities.)

If I'm not mistaken he ( a gnome) is in one of the mines on the Guardians island.

I think the one right above the mage's camp.

Makes sense, they have that mine there and the "gnoo" seem to like working with gems and such, or anything that's shiny really, heh.
(Kinda reminds me of the mine in Gothic 1 though I don't really remember much from the game, just that attacking Gomez early is a really bad idea.)

EDIT: Oh so those named ducks are some sort of easter-egg.

Prospecting trainer is indeed available in one of the mines, the mine where you need to solve problems for the 5 gnomes. For 500 gold you get +3 when mining, great value when you haven't explored a lot.

Have you invested in some special skills with trainers? I have riposte but I stopped investing glory and gold in melee skills. I tried to take on a shadow lord with melee only and got completely raped.
Then I attempted to beat him with a carbine and that was not so difficult, and I have no glory invested at all in ranged attack. My musket skill is like 15 Laughing
