I'll skip fiddling around with this uncracked release and wait for a cracked version. What protection was it again? SD4? Should be no biggie for a good group. I can wait.

Spock is just reading the quotes when completing a discovery, the tutorial is (obviously) read by Sid Meier and the tutorial by god knows who.

Only thing i did to get the game working was mounting in newest daemon tools - installed the game, and then i was set to play. nothing else needed to be done. Running winxp SP2.

However i had some gfx trouble, after 10 turns or so the game started making some weird colors. I am using gf4200ti. Noticed i was using some pretty old drivers, so when i get homef rom work i will update then. hope that fixes things

There is a Walktrough from Sulla, a Civ IV-Beta, explains things pretty good, look for it on civfanatics.

Anyone know if it's possible to start a map with the "Earth" map but with extra civilizations?

You can start a scenario with the Earth map but it only lets you pick from about 8 ancient civilizations.

Anyone had this problem?

Using alcohol and Antiblaxx the disccheck passes... the game starts loading... you get a "reading XML" then the screen disapear and nothing more happens? Quite frustrating! I've preordered Civ4 but in Europe you wont get until the 4th of november and I wanna try it now! Razz

I'm in love.

Civ III didn't really feel like a new Civ, more like Civ 2.5 or something, but THIS is great. And a lot harder than the previous ones, the barbarians especially are a LOT tougher. I played the Romans, and the barbarians captured one of my cities, and my archers couldn't get it back. I had to wait until I could create the praetorians to get my city back and rebuild all the improvements the barbarians had destroyed. So far, I'm loving it. But perhaps playing the tutorial isn't such a bad idea, because I have no idea what half of the new things are. Very Happy

Copied from elsewhere - it works for me.
--------------------------------------------------------

I was having the same problem as everyone. Here is what i did.

1. mount it in Alcohol OR Daemon with NO emulation options on.

2. run sd4hide.exe and click HIDE

3. CLOSE sd4hide.exe

4. Click the game link on the desktop and start with the tutorial =p
------

A REALLY important step missing was the CLOSE part. With it open i always crashed after the splash.

I got the game working on the first try. Mounted on Daemon with Safedisc emulation - installed the game and it works.

The thing with city disorder is that you need to make the people in the city happy (duh). Check the city for detail info. Sometimes it's too crowded, sometimes there's no food...ect. As Cartoon said, you can not create entertainers, but you can create Coloseums and other things that make ppl happy. If the city info shows "It's too crowded here", I suggest you start building those smal houses around the city (use the worker). As time passes people move there and the city grows Smile

The "problem" with the Mechanized unit losing against the Pikeman, is not usaly a problem. The Pikeman could have a higher Defence bonus (perhaps a veteran or a elite unit). As I can see on the screenshot the city is on a hill, and that gives +25% in defence bonus. This means that the city is well defended. The trick to brake the defence is ofcourse, the ARTY Smile . Use 2-4 catapults or cannos, or MLRS (in modern age), and pound the city. Those babys can take out their entire defence plus some important buildings like Baracks, Granary..ect that slow down the producition of new units. I've been taking over cities this way since Civ I and it allways worked Very Happy
