First GK is still perfectly playable and fine the way it is. They should rather remake the second and third game as classic adventures without the awful FMV crap.

Looks actually pretty good. Let's just hope they stay as close to the original as possible since that was awesome.
I remember when I fucked up one day and then later on that was an actual consequence where I lost due to my mistake. Very Happy

Looks good. Actually one of not that many adventure games I enjoyed.

First screen: So Much Win

The others: Poker Face

Why the characters and some of the objects have to look so extremely out of place? This looks like an adventure game from last century where they tried to implement 3d models Sad Sad

man good old times. played gk2 the beast within but i almost forgot everything about it. Sad
at the same time i was playing phantasmagoria and i will never forget anything from this game.
wish they would make a proper phantasmagoria remake with real actors... maybe some time but then again i don't think any publisher would risk it to bring out a game with that much gore these days.

/edit

just saw this... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3045366/?ref_=nv_sr_1
bet it will be crap and rated pg-13 Crying or Very sad

what is this shit ... Phoenix Online standards are fucking awful
Here the original DOS VERSION that was in 320x200 with sound blaster sounds

and here the Enchanted WINDOWS VERSION that was in 640x480 with MT32 MIDI

so no original voice cast of
Tim Curry as Gabriel,
Mark Hamill as Mosely,
Leah Remini as Grace,
Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. as Wolfgang Ritter
and
Michael Dorn

but cheap soundalikes that cant voice act

what's next remake Quake I to be derp ... oh wait

Hfric and Bob seems like you were right with this one Razz. Apparently several parts of the game have been altered so much that they lost most of their charm, and the 3D/2D blending ain't exactly top-quality material.

save a couple of tweaks here and there and a little streamlining, such as no longer being able to go to the Napoleon House, Voodoo Museum, Dixieland Drugstore or Grandma Knight’s home on Day 1. I understand the reasoning, to make it clearer what you’re meant to do, but it still feels a shame; making the world feel so much smaller

Quote:
What’s missing though is the vibe, the atmosphere, and most importantly, a sense that this remake was done with a full understanding of why decisions were made the first time around, despite Jane Jensen being on board. It’s hard to explain why it doesn’t work, but… okay, try this. Imagine taking a TV show, upscaling it to IMAX size, and passing it off as an IMAX movie. It’s not going to fly
Laughing
Quote:
it’s not that the art is in itself bad. It does however often seem to miss the point, stepping away from elements that worked so well to create atmosphere

Quote:
streamlining of the puzzles, a Journal that replaces the tape-recorder with quick reminders of what to do next, a full hints system, and behind-the-scenes bonus content. This is a really great idea, frustratingly executed, showing storyboards and early pencilwork and comparison shots… trapped in a really small window in the middle of the screen, with no way to blow them out and actually get a good look.

Laughing
Code:
Honestly, I think it might even do it harm, to show people a game that’s been talked up for so long only to have them go “Wait, what? This is it?”

I got that site boycotted - who wrote the review? (keep in mind that John Walker is a cunt and shit at reviewing adventure games so if it's him, take his opinion with a few tons of salt).

I don't see "total shit" in that review. The writer is disappointed and thinks it doesn't live up to the original, but that it's a good choice for anyone who is never going to bother playing the first game. But the instant I saw that it has sliding block puzzles turned me off from even pirating it.

He tries to coat it a bit, saying it's still the same old game down under it, but in the end the review is brutal.

Honestly the reviewer sounded like someone trying too hard to come out as a lover of the old one, and I don't know why, but he really didn't convince me. Arguments that they should update the story, complains about bad animations, and missing animations from original, really don't look valid to me. And then he goes on and complains about the 'odd lack of atmosphere despite the artists having far more tools at their disposal.' He is completely oblivious to the fact that GK 1 was Sierras flagship title with a huge budget at the time of it's release.

Remake was made on a whole different budget level. Still, they could have just taken the old game, throw it through upscaler, add HD after the title, and sell it for the same price. The fact is they didn't do that, and what they achieved with a small team is commendable. It still has it charm, and it still works quite well as a game. Even with sliding puzzles it works. The experience is different but not at all bad.

Think of it as a remake of a classic film that was still enjoyable. I'll be first to advice anyone interested in GK to first at least try the original. Then if interface is too clumsy and you can't look past the graphics, try the remake. And in case you really loved the original, 20th edition will be a must. Just like that blue ray, next to that dvd, next to that vcr tape of your favourite film.

Yea unfortunately its not that good...it actually made me re-install the old version and play the game again:)

Voice acting is the worst along with the music...it just doesn't have the atmosphere and the "dark" feel the old game had...eh its ok...

Was meaning to (re)play the game in its remade vest after all these years, but now I'm not sure anymore.
I must say though, I agree with what Fawe wrote, it's not a terrible attempt. Razz For me it mainly suffers from Phoenix Online's problems with the average-looking Sims-like models and animations, and from some questionable art-direction-related choices (still better than Moebius, though).

The rest is okay. Some redesigned locations are faithful to the original ones, others are...different, but not in a good way (either too colorful or baroquesque).
Then there's the new voice acting which is hit and miss and not on par with the classic cast (but that was to be expected Okay)
Even if this is not a disaster, I would definitely recommend playing the original first.
