Is there a comprehensive list of spells and whatnot? Manual, perhaps?

The combat will be as shit as Risen 2, if you keep playing it, as if it were Risen 2.
Take a step back, and you will realize, that it's more balanced, and you have to vary up your attack types and dodges.
For example, sometimes you will parry, and keep your balance. Other times you parry, but lose your balance, and have a cooldown on parry and attack, then you have to follow up with a quick dodge, or the enemys next hit will land. Dodge heavy attacks, when they are incoming, of course. Stop spamming attack, when the enemy is parrying, won't help, take a step back, or attack another enemy. Etc.
It's Risen 2's combat, but it's consistent and polished up.
Also very important: enemy attack patterns are back, you have to learn them.
Second edit: hit timing from R1 is back, too. So if you click too fast, or too slow, then you will attack slow. Time it just right, and you have a nice flurry at your hands.
Overall, my opinion is, that the demos we saw were played by newbies on easy difficulty. Fire it up on hard, and have a grand old PB blast, mates.

Make sure the game isn't running at 30hz, I know a few people have had this issue. |

How do I open locked chests on the other side of the first island? After you get  Spoiler: | resurrected? |
They require lockpicks and I have none

So, I guess we can go back to the first island or what? I need a pickaxe and lockpicks to collect everything and they are nowhere to be found here ;\
PS Lack of information on this game is irritating.. I have no idea what fraction should I join.. what spells voodoo magic has or crystal magic.. etc

PS Once I got away from the first island the game got more interesting and gothic like. I'm loving it so far. But we'll see how it turns out.

Protips: I haven't actually gotten close to joining a faction, but studying the attributes and skills in the game will give your a very thorough view.
Like: Pirates and Voodoo go together, with melee, dexterity and influence as main attributes. You will be using piercing weapons for melee and voodoo magic.
OR
Demon Hunter is melee and toughness, iirc, and you will use slashing weapons and demon hunter magic.
The game doesn't hand hold, and that is great.

I'm fine with not holding hand, I prefer it this way, but I don't like a total absence of information. Voodoo magic..crystal magic..wtf is this? Will there be mana or something similar? Will it regen? Will I have to use every time I need to cast a spell a consumable item(magic crystal?)?what spells each school of magic has? What skills I can learn in this game?Based on the information I can make a choice. For now I'm playing totally blindly and I'm not comfortable with this although the game seems interesting.

The only DLC is that island listed on the Steam site or?
In Risen 2 those DLC island were said to be crap anyways

You have to travel outside of the first island, also the chest is x as in your lockpick skill
