I need a truly fast (lightning-speed) scanner for reproduction of detailed hand-written text. I don't need color at all, just that it's able to handle black & white (and whatever grayscales necessary for softer written text).

I need to be scanning at at most 3-4 seconds/page.

Is this possible? And what scanner am I looking for then?

Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

Digital Camera and a very steady hand? - I don't think you will have much luck finding a scanner that fast Sad!

HP makes the 8250 and 8290 series scanners that do about 15 pages per minute.. Those can run as much as $1500. They are color scanners, so I bet that B&W scanning would probably be a bit faster.

Umax makes the AV8000S, which is a monster.. It will do up to 35ppm, but this puppy will run a little over $2000.

IMO, Umax makes the best scanners out there. I've had one for almost 10 years now and its been a workhorse.
