I stopped using Amazon along time ago for pre-orders because as Horrordee says "depends - sometimes". I got pissed off at ordering stuff only to have it arrive days/sometimes a week after release day.
There are at least 3 other alternatives off the top of my head which are cheaper and ship pre-orders sometimes a couple of days in advance of them even being released, meaning you have the game 1-2 days before its in stores.

Play.com (very cheap on most games for preorders and reliable)
Gameplay (good store for shipping preorders before release dates)
Game (again reasonable prices, good at getting orders shipped quickly plus they often have offers when stuff is preordered)
Theres also sendit.com, never used them for preorders but they occasionally have games cheaper than the other stores online.
Im not an Amazon fan as I said, I think so many online stores now offer a much better level of service and more competitive pricing.
